The main objective is to distinguish the concepts of preservation and conservation and identify the specific methods applied to the collection known as Sala Zila. Methodologically, the study adopts a qualitative approach and a case study procedure, guided by the inductive method and supported by bibliographic and documentary research. The theoretical framework draws on national and international standards and authors who conceptualize preservation and conservation in the context of memory institutions. As a result, it was observed that, although the BCZM has a manual that provides general guidance on the care of rare works, the institutional preservation policy is still incipient. The procedures adopted in the Sala Zila are primarily directed at cleaning and basic maintenance of documents, with limited actions to combat the different agents of deterioration. In this sense, it was concluded that, while the BCZM demonstrates concern for the longevity of its collection, the absence of a structured and formalized preservation policy limits the effectiveness of its conservation actions. Additionally, the research highlights the importance of developing integrated and multidisciplinary strategies, involving trained professionals and institutional planning, to ensure the continuity of access to documentary heritage.
