To face these challenges, it is essential to understand the various approaches and practices adopted for solid waste management. Given this reality, this study aims to understand the main challenges faced by Brazilian municipalities in the integrated management of their solid waste. To this end, an integrative review of the literature on the subject was carried out, allowing the gathering and analysis of studies that address different aspects of waste management, providing a comprehensive and updated view of the strategies, public policies, technologies and challenges faced by municipal managers. The results obtained indicate that municipalities face a series of challenges in the management of their solid waste, thus highlighting the importance of Municipal Plans for Integrated Solid Waste Management (PMGIRS) as a planning tool to contribute to advances in selective collection, in addition to the need for investment in technologies and environmental training.
