Influência do tipo de proteína animal ou vegetal, sobre o aumento e manutenção da massa muscular: revisão narrativa. Orientador: Rodrigo Albert Baracho Ruegg. 2025. 29 f. Trabalho de Conclusão de Curso (graduação em Nutrição), Departamento de Nutrição, Centro de Ciências da Saúde, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, Natal, 2025.https://repositorio.ufrn.br/handle/123456789/65032The maintenance and increases in muscle mass are physiological processes dependent on a positive protein balance, influenced by the quality, quantity, and distribution of protein intake throughout the day. Considering the growing adoption of vegetarian and vegan diets, there is increasing interest in understanding whether plant-based proteins can match the anabolic potential of animal-based proteins. This narrative review aimed to analyze whether the type of ingested protein — of animal or plant origin — directly influences muscle protein synthesis and degradation. A structured literature search was conducted in the PubMed, ScienceDirect, Scopus, and SciELO databases using the descriptors: plant protein, animal protein, muscle mass, muscle protein synthesis, and sports nutrition, as well as their English equivalents based on MeSH terms. Articles published between January 2000 and May 2024 in Portuguese, English, and Spanish were included. The screening and selection of studies were carried out independently by two researchers, with consensus in cases of disagreement. A total of 38 studies were included, comprising randomized clinical trials, cross-sectional studies, observational cohorts, and systematic reviews, involving diverse populations (young adults, elderly, trained and untrained individuals). The results indicate that animal-based proteins elicit a greater acute anabolic response, mainly due to their high digestibility and higher leucine content. However, high-quality plant-based proteins, when properly combined and consumed in adequate amounts, can also promote significant effects in maintaining and increasing muscle mass, especially when associated with resistance training. It is concluded that both animal and plant proteins can be effective, provided that individual needs, the bioavailability of essential amino acids, and appropriate nutritional strategies are taken into account.pt-BRPalavras-chave: proteína vegetalproteína animalsíntese proteica muscularmassa muscularnutrição esportivaInfluência do tipo de proteína, animal ou vegetal, sobre o aumento e manutenção da massa muscular: revisão narrativaInfluence of animal or plant-based protein on muscle mass increase and maintenance: a narrative reviewbachelorThesisCIENCIAS DA SAUDE
