Potencial de uso da Anadenanthera colubrina para restauração da Caatinga. 2018. 26 f. Monografia (Graduação em Ecologia) – Curso de Ecologia, Centro de Biociências, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, Natal, 2018.https://repositorio.ufrn.br/handle/123456789/43370Caatinga is a Brazilian dry forest that occupies a large part of Northeast and a small part of Minas Gerais states. Its climatic characteristics combined with deforestation processes has increased Caatinga susceptibility to desertification, which represents a large challenge to restoration projects in this ecosystem. In the search of native species with potential use to restore this environment, Anadenanthera colubrina (Vell.) Brenan emerges as a pioneer widely distributed species with high potential for increasing Caatinga restoration success. This work aims to evaluate if the planting of A. colubrina would be a viable strategy for restoration programs in Caatinga. Many aspects related to greenhouse production, survival post planting and long term suitability to Caatinga’s environment were studied. The results demonstrate a good performance of A. colubrina in all tests. The species presented almost 100% germination of its seeds without the use of dormancy-breaking treatments. Shoot growth rates during plant production in the greenhouse did not differ among treatments of high or low water availability. Its survival in the field was high and not related to herbivory levels. The species distribution model showed a good performance and high suitability, for its use in restoration programs in almost all the Caatinga ecosystem. Our results indicate that A. colubrina is a good tree species choice to be used in restoration programs.
