The present essay advocates that the utilization of information and automation technology in electric grids, in order to make them intelligent (Smart Grid), improves the decision-making process. It was used a conceptual analysis about the information system's value hierarchy in the methodology, making a comparative study of this kind of technology with the one used at the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte.
