Conducted within the framework of comparative literary studies, the analysis incorporates not only Petrarch’s writings but also contributions from his biographers, enabling an in-depth exploration of the poet’s fixation on the theme of exile. The second objective is to offer an unpublished Portuguese translation of the aforementioned epistle, employing vernacular hexameters to emulate the rhythm of the Latin original. This translation is accompanied by commentary on the translation process, discrepancies among editions used to establish the source text, and intertextual connections between Petrarch and the sources that likely inspired hthe composition of his poetic epistle. The theoretical basis for the first part of the study relies on Delumeau (1994; 1984) and Witt (2001), who illustrate Petrarch’s role within the early Renaissance, as well as Wilkins (1961) and Dotti (2006), who contextualize him within his contemporary world. Additionally, Lejeune (2008), Karpinski (2001), and others emphasize the link between poetry and autobiography, while Kristeva (1994) broadens the concept of foreignness, enriching the interpretation of Petrarch’s authorial self-representation as a figure of someone who is an outsider. For the second part, the study is guided by Nunes (1962) in the adoption of vernacular hexameter for the translation, alongside theories by Pannwitz (1917 apud Benjamin, 2008), Schleiermacher (1977), and Venuti (2021), which advocate a translation approach that draws readers closer to the original.
