In the case of deep-focus earthquakes (depth > 300 km), they occur under high pressure and temperature conditions, where the surface rupture process is unfeasible, giving them a paradoxical nature. This study used seismic wave phases (P and S) from an event that occurred on 20/01/2023 in Santiago del Estero, northern Argentina, with a magnitude of 6.8 Mw and a depth of 596 km, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The research generated synthetic data from a reference velocity model (AK135-F) for depths between 500 and 700 km. The Cut-and-Paste (CAP) inversion approach was employed, allowing individual inversion of P and S segments, and using cross-correlation to align observed and synthetic seismograms. The result was a normal faulting mechanism (strike: 10°, dip: 20°, rake: -50°), justifying the earthquake with a centroid depth of 660 km and seismic moment of 2.24x10^19 N.m (Mw 6.9). This result agrees with the previously published by the USGS, showing consistency with a Down-Dip Compression (DDC) stress field regime in the subducted plate. At these depths, DDC is expected in the subducted plate, which can be attributed to the weight of the subducting plate and the resistance it faces when penetrating the lower mantle. Thus, the normal focal mechanism down-dip style justifies the occurrence of deep earthquakes in the region.Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 3.0 Brazilhttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/3.0/br/Terremotos de foco profundoDown-dip compressionCut-and-pasteAmérica do SulDeep focus earthquakesSouth AmericaModelação de formas de onda de um terremoto de fonte profunda (596 km) na região de Santiago de Estero, Norte da ArgentinaWaveform modeling of a deep source earthquake (596 km) in the Santiago del Estero region, Northern ArgentinabachelorThesis
