Thus, in this work, samples of AISI M2 high speed steel were treated by the cathodic cage plasma nitriding technique, to obtain improvement in the mechanical properties of the steel. For this study, 5 (five) samples are treated metallographically and then 4 (four) of them nitrided using two different types of cages, in AISI 304 and Titanium Grade II steel. Of the samples treated, two passed through both cages, varying the order; one only for Titanium; and the other only through the stainless-steel cage. After treatment, the samples were analyzed for the thickness of the deposited layer, by means of scanning electron microscopy; and as for its surface microhardnesses, by means of a microdurometer. The deposition order implied different layer thicknesses and the values of surface microhardness obtained: for the sample first nitrided with a stainless-steel cage, and later titanium, the highest surface hardness was obtained, but a lower thickness of the deposited layer. With a configuration where the titanium cage was previously applied to stainless steel, the largest layer thickness of this study was obtained, but it was not the sample with the greatest surface hardness.Aço AISI M2Nitretação a plasmaGaiola catódicaDurezaPlasma nitridingCathodic cageHardnessEstudo da nitretação por gaiola catódica em aço AISI M2Study of cathodic cage plasma nitriding on AISI M2bachelorThesis
