Respostas humanas e cultura de autocuidado de pessoas idosas indígenas: um estudo de métodos mistos. 2019. 150f. Dissertação (Mestrado em Enfermagem) - Centro de Ciências da Saúde, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, Natal, 2019.https://repositorio.ufrn.br/jspui/handle/123456789/28531BACKGROUND: in Brazil, information about the health conditions and self-care culture of indigenous elderly people is still scarce and fragmented, which makes it difficult to develop qualified, systematized and culturally congruent nursing care to this population. AIM: to analyze human responses and self-care culture of indigenous elderly people in the context of the community in the light of the Theory of the Universality of Diversity in Cultural Care. METHOD: this is a research of mixed methods, of convergent parallel type. The study site was located at the Amarelão indigenous community, located in João Câmara, Rio Grande do Norte. The population was composed of indigenous elderly people, of the Potyguara ethnic group. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected simultaneously, with the same weight attribution, and data integration was performed. Concerning theorizing, the Theory of Diversity and Universality of Cultural Care was adopted. In the quantitative approach, a Nursing Consultation was carried out with 51 participants, already in the qualitative approach phase, an open interview with 17 participants, during the month of August 2019. To establish the nursing diagnoses, the North American Nursing Diagnosis Association taxonomy was used (2018- 2020); data were then submitted to statistical analysis in the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences program. The Q-Square and Fisher's Exact tests were applied. Qualitative data were analyzed based on thematic content analysis. The research was approved by the National Research Ethics Commission under the opinion of nº. 3,475,904. RESULTS: 38 Nursing Diagnoses were identified, being the most prevalent: Impaired dentition (98.0%), Risk of impaired skin integrity (66.7%), Chronic pain (64.7%), Risk of deficient fluid volume (54.9%), Impaired swallowing (45.1%), Impaired walking (45.1%), Disturbed sleep pattern (43.1%), Stress urinary incontinence (41.2%), Disc falls (35.3%) and sexual dysfunction (33.3%), which point to a compromised functional capacity of the participants. Concerning the qualitative data, three thematic categories were identified: 1) Meaning of health in the conception of indigenous elderly people; 2) The indigenous experience of falling ill and 3) Indigenous practices of self-care, these demonstrate the meaning of health and disease and the self-care in health of this population. CONCLUSION: based on the convergences, combinations and divergences of quantitative and qualitative results, the study found that the human responses present in indigenous elderly people are the result of factors that influence functional capacity. Regarding the self-care culture, the use of medicinal plants for the prevention and treatment of diseases, as well as the performance of domestic activities, manual labor and autonomy to solve problems, as ways to achieve active aging was noted. However, medicalization in the health-disease process is present, through the dependence on the use of drugs, including psychotropics, as well as the low presence of preventive practices adopted by the group, which denotes the influence of the medical-curative model in the practices of self-care of this population, possibly the result of contact with non-indigenous society through health services.Acesso AbertoEnfermagem gerontológicaSaúde indígenaAutocuidadoEnfermagem transculturalProcesso de EnfermagemMétodos mistosRespostas humanas e cultura de autocuidado de pessoas idosas indígenas: um estudo de métodos mistosHuman responses and self-care culture of indigenous elderly: a mixed methods studymasterThesisCNPQ::CIENCIAS DA SAUDE::ENFERMAGEM
