Method: This is a Scoping Review, which used the Population (Managers of family health units), Concept (Challenges and potential of the work) and Context (Brazil) strategies, with the guiding question: What are the challenges and potentials experienced by managers of family health units in Brazil? The data were extracted to a spreadsheet adapted from the reference used and analyzed through simple descriptive statistics, and qualitative analysis with the support of the Iramuteq software. Results: The results show that most of the studies were conducted in the Southeast and Northeast regions. The articles that point out more challenges than potentialities, with the most frequently mentioned challenges after the analysis of the Iramuteq software being the organization of care, the bond between professionals and users, the organization of management, work overload, multiple functions and failed communication. The potentialities are directly linked to the challenges, since the most frequently mentioned potentialities are precisely the resolution of the challenges, with the most frequently mentioned being training courses for the position, the bond between professionals and users, and knowledge of the territory. Conclusion: The results of this study point to the need for strategies that enhance the role of the manager, promoting more detailed working conditions and investing in specific training that takes into account the realities faced in the territory.
