The main objective is to understand the challenges which poetic translation presents, how to face them—considering their historical and social characteristics and taking into account gender issues and the queer elements present—and whether it is possible to translate works under these conditions. Through this study, a contemporary dictionary and a Historical dictionary of the English language, the poem To the fair Clarinda, who made Love to me, imagin’d more than Woman (1688) by the English author Aphra Behn was analyzed, utilizing approaches from various translation theorists such as Henri Meschonnic, Ezra Pound, Edwin Gentzler, Brian James Baer, and Klaus Kaindl; from scholars of the life and work of the author, such as Jennifer Frangos, Janet Todd, and Derek Hughes to understand, in context, the elements present in her work; and from queer translation theorists, such as José Santaemilia, Marc Démont, and Leo Tak-Hung Chan.
