Such concern is also of great significance for the important civil construction industry, which has a leading role in economic life of all countries, what is not different in Brazil, but it is also characterized as causing great environmental impacts. This work has proposed to study this theme, which deals with the relationship between civil construction works, more specifically public ones, and environmental preservation, based on the possibility of changes in its traditional mode of production, as it aims to propose guidelines for planning and executing such works as sustainable. In order to achieve this work, a bibliographic, documentary and field research was carried out, adopting as a method the case study, having as field of study the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN) and as research subjects public agents (architects, engineers and legal adviser), whose actions are related to subject studied, and also representatives of construction companies, all responsible for the construction of civil works in that institution, using semi-structured interviews carried out individually and in focus group meetings, followed by reflective dialogue. The results of research indicated that, despite of great acceptance by the subjects of the research regarding the idea proposed in this work, the works carried out at UFRN can not be considered as directed towards sustainability yet, due to the indication promoted by the subjects like needs of institutionalization of this idea, greater capacity building of responsible teams and better adaptation to current regulations.
