Helicobacter pylori em indivíduos procedentes de Campina Grande e com queixas dispépticas referenciados para endoscopia digestiva em serviço público. 2017. 76f. Tese (Doutorado em Ciências da Saúde) - Centro de Ciências da Saúde, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, Natal, 2017.https://repositorio.ufrn.br/jspui/handle/123456789/25601Helicobacter pylori is a gram-negative bacterium involved in gastric disease in humans with universal distribution and affects at least half the world's population. Geographic, ethnic and socioeconomic factors contribute to different epidemiological profiles among populations. Its main mode of transmission is fecal-oral route. Poor sanitary conditions associated with low level of education and family income are important risk factors for the acquisition of the bacteria. The goals of this study were to evaluate the distribution of Helicobacter pylori in the city of Campina Grande, by estimating its prevalence in people with dyspeptic patients seeking the public health service. This is a descriptive study in which 200 individuals were evaluated, from Campina Grande municipality, who presented with dyspeptic complaints and who had a request for endoscopy. In all selected individuals gastric biopsies were collected observing the current endoscopic protocols for identification of bacteria by laboratory methods (urease test, histology and polymerase chain reaction). All subjects belonged to the same geographic region and 72.5% (145/200) were female. Only 17.5% (35/200) of the elderly were exposed to infection and 65% (78/200) consumed water provided by the government. Hand washing inappropriately, exposure to government water and smoking were considered risk factors for infection. Among the symptoms, belching was the most clinical manifestation associated with infection and the presence of bacteria was a condition associated with gastric disease, especially gastritis, regardless of grade. However, in the presence of infection the chance of severity of gastritis is greater than one hundred times. The prevalence of infection in Campina Grande is high, common in adult age groups, whereas the severity of gastric disease increases with infection and risk factors are related to poor sanitary conditions, it is necessary to implement preventive programs in risk areas, stimulating education and knowledge of the bacterium eradication methods.
