This movement is promoted by the latest industrial revolution, that is, industry 4.0. However, linked to this, there are challenges that make it difficult to achieve this goal, for example, for the implementation of more sustainable technologies and processes, there are barriers such as high energy demand, increased operating costs and greater complexity of controlling these processes. The present work refers to a systematic review of the literature, structured based on the PRISMA methodology. The articles were selected from a database search and chosen after the analysis of adequacy to the theme. In this review, studies that implement advanced process control (APC) strategies from the perspective of sustainability are evaluated. The main objective of the research is to evaluate the contribution of APC systems to the sustainable development of the industry. The results show that advanced process control is a great option to be applied to complex systems, given the good performance of the control system achieved by studies that implemented APC strategies to processes considered challenging. Advanced control can increase the efficiency of processes and improving aspects that influence the environmental performance of the industry, such as reducing energy demand and reducing pollutant emissions.
