This is a pedagogical work required by the Professional Master Program in Teaching of History as the final project for completing the degree requirements. The booklet format was chosen because it is more accessible, besides having an easy-to-understand language. The work was developed within the line of research called Historical Knowledge in Different Spaces of Memory, and aims to contribute to the Teaching of History based on the concept of historical consciousness by the German historian Jörn Rüsen (2007). According to Rüsen, the purpose of the Teaching of History is to form conscious individuals who are historical subjects, that is, they have a social role. The theory corroborates with documents that legislate Brazil’s basic education system, in which History is inserted as a school discipline, which states that the formation of the citizen as its main objective of History Teaching. Following these precepts, this booklet is an applicable project for eighth grade classes in Fortaleza’s Middle Schools, and can be developed by history professors with the support of the teaching institutions in which they work for. The proposed project, which was applied in a private school in Fortaleza, has the old Mucuripe Lighthouse (Farol do Mucuripe) as its central didactic resource for the learning of History and the exercise of citizenship. It encourages the students to question the current state of abandonment and deterioration of this historical building located in the Serviluz community, at the Cais do Porto neighborhood, leading them to analyze the historical importance of the Mucuripe Lighthouse and to propose solutions to the building’s current situation. Throughout the execution of the project, students answer questions such as: “why should the building be preserved?”, and “what use should be given to it?”.
