Thousands of microorganisms colonize our bodies maintaining a commensal relationship and bringing benefits to the host. Dysbiosis notably influences the pathogenesis of some skin conditions. Substances like probiotics and prebiotics, among others, are active agents capable of modulating the microbiota; thus, their therapeutic action occurs through the restoration of harmony between bacterial communities. This narrative review aimed to analyze the current literature regarding the use of modulating substances of cutaneous microbiota in cosmetic products, highlighting the effects observed on aged skin or affected by some dermatological conditions, specifically acne and atopic dermatitis. There is a growing demand for safe, organic and less harmful cosmetic products, therefore, research and development of these products has demonstrated an evident rise. However, its implementation still faces difficulties, due to factors intrinsic to the assets, and the lack of studies on the subject. The results of this bibliographic survey indicate that various skin health benefits associated with the use of microbiota modulators have been supported by recent research.
