Analysis of the dental calculus deposits (tartar) are yet to be done in species in the state. Therefore, this study has as objective characterize macro-morphological dental calculus deposits in N. platensis molars from the fossil assemblages in the Rio Grande do Norte. The analyzed material belongs to the paleontological vertebrates collection (Onofre Lopes) of the paleontology department of the Câmara Cascudo Museum/UFRN and includes seven molars, six of them being permanents and one deciduous. All specimens were macroscopically analyzed, taking into account the distribution and overall look (color, superficial aspect and thickness) of the tartar deposits. The calculus is predominant in the interlophid of the molars, this can be related to the removal difficulty of the bacterial plaque and accumulation of vegetal remains in these regions of the molars. The deposits characterize themselves, in general, through a yellower coloration, though it is variable; by a more rough surface aspect; and by some thickness differences between the molars, as well between different deposits from the same teeth. By the conditions of the human and animal calculus formation known, it is likely that the analyzed specimens had specific oral environment conditions and calcification facilitators microorganisms. The comparative analysis suggests that there is a correlation between the dental calculus progression and age group from the studied specimens.
