Objective: To analyze stress, sleep quality and daytime sleepiness in teachers of basic education. Descriptive exploratory cross-sectional study with quantitative approach, conducted in Natal / RN, from May 2011 to May 2013. Twenty schools were visited, among them public and private, and 98 primary school teachers were approached. Data collection was performed through the instruments: Health and sleep, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSRI), the Epworth / ESE Sleepiness Scale, the Horne and Ostberg Questionnaire, and the LIPP Adult Stress Symptom Inventory (ISSL). The profile of the teachers was: 90 teachers, with a mean age of 43 years (SD ± 9.37 years), married (64%), with children (76%), teaching in a public school (63%), working in only one school (48%) and average teaching time of 19 years. The most frequent chronotype was the intermediate (41%). Were diagnosed with poor sleep quality (44% - x2 = 1.60; p = 0.20) and 36% with excessive daytime sleepiness (x2 = 1.51; p = 0.21). Of the individuals (57% - x2 = 1.96; p = 016), they presented symptoms of stress, mostly in the resistance phase (73% - x2 = 142.3; p = 0.001), followed by the exhaustion phase. (27% - x 2 = 142.3; p = 0.001).
