The homicides that occurred in the peripheral zone of the city of Natal (RN) are taken as reference, whose victims are mostly young people with a social profile (poor, black, periphery resident) similar to the students at the “Centro de Educação de Jovens e Adultos (CEJA) Profa. Lia Campos”, which was the researcher’s field of professional activity. The approach comes from theorists from different areas of study, Lilia M. Schwarcz, Hannah Arendt, Marilena Chauí, Marcelo Perine, Zygmunt Bauman, Jean Claude Chesnais, who have been concerned with reflecting upon violence. The author's field of reflection, however, is History. Therefore, official documents related to education in Brazil and, especially, History teaching, are also taken into consideration. This is action research, in which problematic situations that demand answers are identified directly from the people involved. The research sources consisted of interviews with the members of the school community and with professionals of the security area. Studies of agencies that measure violence were also used, such as the IAER (Institute of Applied Economic Research) and the Violence Observatory of Rio Grande do Norte (VORN). The study proposal brings a wider acting perspective, involving not only History content.
