The use of predictive assessment tools is able to provide important results for referral and early treatment with the aim of reducing the age at diagnosis and reducing possible health complications. The present study tested the feasibility of implementing the Qualitative Assessment of Generalized Movements and the Test of Infant Motor Performance through the knowledge translation strategy in a maternity school that uses the kangaroo method. Methodology: We designed an implementation protocol to assess the neurodevelopment of preterm infants during the three stages of the kangaroo method and at the follow-up clinic. The effectiveness of the protocol was verified by comparing the pre- and post implementation periods. The motor trajectories of generalized movements and motor performance of the infants, the frequency of referrals to the neurologist and to therapy services were analyzed. Results: The sample consisted of 22 babies with motor disorders in the hospital environment. When analyzing clinically relevant factors, a high level of agreement was observed at 3 - 4 months between the Qualitative Assessment of Generalized Movements and the Test of Infant Motor Performance. The number of referrals to the neurologist was reduced, according to the criteria pre-established by the clinic, and the rates of early referrals to therapy services increased. Conclusion: The clinical application of these instruments associated with imaging tests promotes a reduction in the number of referrals to the neurologist.
