The concentration of total arsenic was determined in six brands of pink lipstick for children's use. The values obtained were compared with the Maximum Permitted Value (MPV) of 3 µg/g, established in RDC 44/2012 by the National Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA). Six brands of pink lipsticks specifically designed for children were analyzed, acquired from the commerce of the city of Natal, Rio Grande do Norte (RN). The laboratory analysis consisted of three phases, all conducted in duplicate. In the first stage, the samples were subjected to pre-calcination and mineralization at 650 ºC until ash formation. In the second phase, the resulting ashes were incorporated into an acidic solution to release arsine, which, in the end, reacted with silver diethyldithiocarbamate (DDC-Ag), forming diethyldithiocarbamate of arsenic (DDC-As). Finally, the DDC-As solutions were analyzed at 540 nm in a UV-Vis spectrophotometer. To obtain the results, an analytical curve was prepared, using a standard arsenic solution at 1.0 µg/mL. The lipstick samples presented concentrations of 0.71, 0.30, 0.42, 0.23, 0.23 and 0.68 µg/g.
