Effect of microwave power on the Zn2SnO4 synthesis and Its use for photodegradation of phenol
(David Publishing Company, 2014) Chiavone Filho, Osvaldo; Foletto, Edson Luiz; Mazutti, Marcio Antonio; Cancelier, Adriano; Flores, Erico Marlon de Moraes; Muller, Edson Irineu; Pereira, Letícia Severo Fagundes; Gündel, André
Spinel structure Zn2SnO4 was successfully synthesized by microwave-assisted hydrothermal process. The effects of the microwave power on the formation and physical properties of the Zn2SnO4 particles are discussed. The products were characterized by X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy, infrared spectroscopy, and N2 adsorption. The results indicated that the microwave power had important influence on the formation of the spinel phase. The results also revealed that the physical properties of Zn2SnO4 particles did not change with the increase of the microwave power above 600 W, with 20 min of reaction time. Furthermore, the photocatalytic activity of the Zn2SnO4 particles for the phenol degradation under sunlight was also investigated

Effects of solvent dols on the synthesis of ZnFe2O4 particles and their use as heterogeneous photo-fenton catalysts
(Materials, 2014-09-03) Chiavone Filho, Osvaldo; Anchieta, Chayene Gonçalves; Cancelier, Adriano; Mazutti, Marcio Antonio; Jahn, Sérgio Luiz; Kuhn, Raquel Cristine; Gündel, Andre; Foletto, Edson Luiz
A solvothermal method was used to prepare zinc ferrite spinel oxide (ZnFe2O4) using ethylene glycol and 1,4 butanediol as solvent diols, and the influence of diols on the physical properties of ZnFe2O4 particles was investigated. The produced particles were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and nitrogen adsorption isotherms, and the catalytic activity for the organic pollutant decomposition by heterogeneous photo-Fenton reaction was investigated. Both solvents produced particles with cubic spinel structure. Microporous and mesoporous structures were obtained when ethylene glycol and 1,4 butanediol were used as diols, respectively. A higher pore volume and surface area, as well as a higher catalytic activity for the pollutant degradation were found when 1,4 butanediol was used as solvent

Photocatalytic activity of ZnAl2O4 spinel for procion red degradation under UV irradiation
(Latin American Applied Research, 2015-01-30) Chiavone Filho, Osvaldo; Stringhini, F. M.; Mazutti, Marcio Antonio; Dotto, Guilherme Luiz; Jahn, Sérgio Luiz; Cancelier, Adriano; Foletto, Edson Luiz
In this work, ZnAl2O4 spinel was used as photocatalyst for dye degradation in aqueous solutions under UV irradiation. This material was prepared by a route with chitosan as template. The effects of process variables, such as, initial dye concentration and photocatalyst concentration were investigated. Kinetic parameters were obtained and the reaction order was determined. The results revealed that both studied variables presented strong influence on the dye degradation efficiency, which attained 100% in some cases. It was found that the dye photocatalytic degradation under UV irradiation followed a first order kinetic behavior. The results indicated that ZnAl2O4 spinel can be used to treat dye containing effluents
