Ivermetcin (IVM) is an antiparasitic drug used worldwide due to its broad spectrum of action and low cost. However, the current drug dosage forms for IVM present drawbacks that compromises the treatment, as difficulties in administration in animals and limited skin permeation. Then, the aim of this work is to produce a microemulsion to deliver IVM for the treatment of parasitic infections in dogs. The IVM microemulsion (IVM-MeLO) composed by purified water (70 %), linseed oil (5 %), Kolliphor® RH40 (21.75 %), Span® 80 (3.25 %) and IVM (1.95 %) was produced and characterized by hydrodynamic diameter, polydispersity index (PdI), pH, conductivity, entrapment efficiency in addition to the physicochemical and chemical stability, and hemolytic potential. Results indicated that the IVM-MeLO exhibited hydrodynamic diameter of 21.7 ± 0.2 nm, PdI of 0.10 ± 0.01, pH value of 5.3 ± 0.05, electrical conductivity of 318 ± 2.00 μS.cm-1 and entrapment efficiency 93.92 ± 3.76%, data related to the microemulsified systems features. The IVM also did not showed any instability phenomena in the stability study conducted. In addition, no hemolytic effect was observed, suggesting a promising biocompatibility. These findings highlight the potential of the IVM-MeLO as a non-toxic and stable formulation, which can be used in further studies as an alternative for cutaneous parasitic infections.
