This study aims to analyze the stigmatization and social invisibilization that permeate the life and death of Chiquinha do Pedregal, a travesti from the countryside town of Aracati, Ceará. In this sense, drawing on memories elicited around her and on her life trajectories, including the circumstances of her being run over and her consequent death, this ethnography investigates the ways in which processes of invisibilization and fear were constructed. To this end, interviews, walks with interlocutors, field itineraries, and documentary research were conducted for the development and discussion of this work. Thus, Chiquinha do Pedregal’s trajectory is reconstructed through the memories of friends, acquaintances, and neighborhood residents, situating the locus of the research and highlighting her forms of sociability, circulation, and existence within the territory. In addition, the analysis of police inquiries makes it possible to understand how the State, through bureaucratic devices and official writing, produces symbolic violence, erasures, and denials of humanity directed at travesti bodies. In light of this, and given the absences and gaps in the official archive, critical fabulation and drawing are mobilized as methodological and political strategies to reinscribe humanity in the research subject. Finally, by reinscribing her existence in the academic space through memory, the research reaffirms the importance of producing narratives about travestilities from the countryside, contributing to the construction of memories, resistances, and existences that have been historically silenced.

Quilombola populations have different perceptions of the various issues that have historically surrounded them, such as vulnerabilities, territorial conflicts, and external threats from enterprises. This research investigates the sociocultural effects of the implementation of renewable energy projects in two quilombola communities in Paraíba: Pitombeira (affected by the Luzia Solar Complex) and Serra do Abreu (under the influence of the Pedra Lavrada Wind Complex). Based on ethnographic research conducted by a quilombola researcher, the analysis focuses on the emic categories of “prejudice” and “damage,” which emerge from local narratives to describe the effects experienced, as opposed to the technical and external concept of “impact.” The study documents profound transformations in the way of life, social organization, territory, and environment, highlighting the absence of prior, free, and informed consultation. The research, therefore, articulates anthropological and epistemological criticism, denouncing how centralized energy transition reproduces colonial logics of accumulation by dispossession, environmental racism, and violation of quilombola territorial rights.

This research presents an ethnography conducted at the Passo da Pátria Full-Time State High School, focusing on artistic practices produced by high school students (drawings, zines, collages, slams, and performances). The central objective is to understand how these productions operate as languages through which students re-signify their educational trajectories and everyday experiences, configuring dynamics of body-territory within the school space. The analysis departs from social interactions and embodied experiences lived in the daily life of the school, seeking to understand the mutual influences between the school environment and students’ cultural creations. Along this path, the study examines how these dynamics of creation and learning expand discussions on the body, articulating anthropology, experience, and education, as well as the mobilization of the body-territory category as an analytical tool to interpret processes of subjectivation, resistance, and transformation emerging from artistic-cultural practices. Methodologically, the research is grounded in a sensitive ethnography developed through participant observation (Guber, 2001), field diaries, visual records, and interviews. Drawing on Leda Maria Martins (2021) and Roy Wagner (2010), the spiraling movement is mobilized as a heuristic analogy to guide the understanding of the research experience, conceived as a trajectory of returns, deviations, and transformations in which researcher and interlocutors mutually affect one another. Based on the analytical categories of body-territory (Miranda, 2014; 2020; 2025), experience (Bondía, 2002; Scott, 1998; Brah, 2006), and aesthetic-corporeal knowledges (Gomes, 2017), the study demonstrates that students’ artistic productions constitute forms of creative and political agency, enabling processes of (re)territorialization and negotiation with school norms. In this context, university extension, understood as an aesthetic-political mediation, emerges as a condition of possibility for the emergence and observation of these practices in everyday school life.

The historiography of Brazil's indigenous populations is always marked by a Eurocentric colonizing vision, which necessarily implies a movement of conquest and exploitation, the result of which is the affirmation of the extinction of these societies or the assimilation of the indigenous people into the regional culture, in the latter case creating the figure of the caboclo or the sertanejo. This constant lack of elements that, taken together, end up not providing information about a past that has not been recorded in history books or other literature, attempts to contradict the existence of a people who lived here and were forced to deny their own existence in order to maintain their survival. This research aims to address the indigenous issue in a municipality in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, based on discussions involving territorialization, the process of invisibilization over the centuries, ethnicity and the struggle for rights. In this way, the aim is to investigate indigenous resistance in communities located in the municipality of Ceará-Mirim/RN (Rio dos Índios, Lagoa Grande and Ponta do Mato), using the analysis of their history, the social relations developed there and the form of sociopolitical organization articulated with the demands. Given the context of the demands made by these communities, the aim is to understand how the process of ethnic-political organization of the indigenous people has been taking place, and its possible constructions, with a view to strengthening ethnic identity.

The objective of this work is to investigate and record the memories of the Catu dos Eleotérios indigenous community, woven into their relationship with the forest, associating life stories and narratives about nature. From an ethnographic perspective, we collected oral records from members of the indigenous community about the space traditionally occupied by the group, and we analyzed oral narratives about stories of enchantment experienced in the community's memory sites during extractive practices – such as the collection of a fruit called mangaba, vines and natural remedies – transmitted through oral tradition by elders, healers, gatherers and herbalist women. During the research, we observed that the oral tradition in the territory is at risk of disappearing due to the threats that the community has suffered, such as river pollution and deforestation caused by the advance of sugarcane monoculture, and the displacement of village residents to urban centers. We conclude that these problems affect the preservation of the fauna and flora of Catu, limit access to natural resources for carrying out productive activities and, consequently, threaten the maintenance of its memories and the conservation of other cultural practices observed in the community.

"Cota não é bagunça, é reparação": uma análise da implementação do procedimento de heteroidentificação racial da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte
(Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, 2024-12-09) Souza, Ysmael Rabino Marrocos Ventura; Schwade, Elisete; http://lattes.cnpq.br/7195821721383755; http://lattes.cnpq.br/6176018052715845; Navia, Angela Mercedes Facundo; https://orcid.org/0000-0001-9552-5763; http://lattes.cnpq.br/9174852118966092; Lopes, Paulo Victor Leite; http://lattes.cnpq.br/7595515282110283; Rodrigues Júnior, Gilson José; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-9370-2612; http://lattes.cnpq.br/1169215729060726
Since the implementation of affirmative action as a response to the reparation of historically marginalized social groups, such as the Black, Indigenous, and Quilombola populations, who had their cultures and lives exterminated through processes such as slavery and land exploitation, Anthropology has increasingly focused on monitoring and reflecting on public policies created and won by social movements, primarily by Black movements. The adoption of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte’s (UFRN) racial quota policy has proven effective in transforming the racial profile of its students. However, in light of fraud cases involving racial quotas for admission to undergraduate courses, racial heteroidentification boards were implemented as a complementary tool to racial self-declaration, through an articulation of the Black, Indigenous, and Quilombola movements at UFRN. Based on an ethnographic description of the implementation process, I propose a reflection on the methodology adopted by the Special Commission for Racial Self-Declaration Verification to identify self-declared Black candidates (Black and Brown), of which I was a part, presenting an analysis of the method used at UFRN and a comparison with the methods used by other institutions and federal universities in Brazil. This work problematizes the use of videos as a tool for racial verification, based on interviews with commission members, and also proposes a reflection on the "pardo" (Brown) category.

This research investigates the ways in which crueira, a cassava by-product, is used in the community of Sítio Coqueiro, Ceará. It analyzes the tensions between traditional practices and innovations introduced by a cassava processing project started in 2022, in partnership with the Laboratory for Creation in Food Culture and Social Gastronomy (EGSIDB). Using an ethnographic approach and 27 semi-structured interviews with residents involved in the project, the study explores the meanings attributed to the crueira over time, its historical uses and the new possibilities for food use. The project reveals different perspectives: while some associate crueira with memories of hunger and poverty, opting for food alternatives considered more practical, others highlight its potential for reframing and enhancing the value of the product. Intergenerational tensions emerge, with young people defending technologies and innovations, while older people resist, prioritizing the preservation of traditional practices. This intergenerational dynamic highlights challenges and opportunities for cultural preservation and food innovation.

This dissertation explores the intricate web of relationships between artisanal fishermen and the marine environment, focusing on the communities of Diogo Lopes, Sertãozinho, and Barreiras, situated in the Sustainable Development Reserve of Ponta do Tubarão. Beyond their economic role, these fishermen play a crucial part as custodians of traditional knowledge, shaping landscapes, memories, and imaginaries. The research delves into the connection between fishermen, boats, and traces through drifts and photoethnography. Grounded in photography, the study aims to safeguard the memory of artisanal fishing, examining how images and narratives unveil a profound link between nature and culture. Photography is embraced as a central instrument and language in the research, highlighting visual protagonism and experimentation in contemporary anthropology. Concepts of montage and experimentation are employed in constructing a multisensory ethnography.

Documenting yourself is part of the life of any national citizen. From the first day of our lives we are related to roles which among other functions, aim to count us and allegedly transform us into citizens with rights and duties. In this dissertation I propose to research the documentation processes of indigenous Warao migrants and refugees in the city of Natal-RN, involving both migratory and civil credentials. To do this I take into account some particularities of the Warao indigenous people, such as their limited ability to speak Portuguese, illiteracy and poor command of digital tools. From there, I critically approach the idea of an individual aspect and individualizing function of technological goods and analyze the particularities and limitations in Natal of some of the document issuance or access processes that are usually presented as generic and democratic routes. This discussion is based on ethnographic research that is not exactly about the Warao, but about these processes that cross them developed from long contact with several groups of indigenous migrants that I have been following for more than four years as a member of extension and university research groups.

(Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, 2025-03-10) Lima, Sol Alves de; Coradini, Lisabete; http://lattes.cnpq.br/3559843462349247; http://lattes.cnpq.br/7572217057148246; Braga, Geslline Giovana; Barbosa Júnior, José Duarte; Lopes, Paulo Victor Leite; http://lattes.cnpq.br/7595515282110283
This research analyzes actions at the Museum of Image and Sound of Ceará (MIS/CE) between 2023 and 2024 that propose new ways for travestis to occupy museological spaces, focusing on the first Atelier for the Creation of Transvestigender Technologies, promoted by the Trair o CIStema Program, coordinated by a team of travesti art educators. The study adopts an ethnographic approach inspired by Tim Ingold's (2015) perspective, which seeks to understand cultural dynamics and creative practices. The methodology employed is the travecametodologia, developed by Isadora Ravena Teixeira da Silva (2022) and grounded in Obrist; Glissant (2023) concepts, particularly his advocacy for the "right to opacity." Travecametodologia explores zones of enchantment and confabulation, using travesti knowledge as a foundation to create new epistemologies. The study also addresses the issue of time and memory, emphasizing that memory is not a fixed phenomenon but an ongoing process of construction in the present. Through the practices and experiences of the artists, the research reveals how these elements become central to the occupation and re-signification of museological spaces. The research adopts a decolonial perspective, grounded in the reflections of thinkers such as Françoise Vergès (2023), Frantz Fanon (1961), Maria Lugones (2014), Andreas Huyssen (2014), Jaqueline de Jesus (2019), Grada Kilomba (2019), Dediane Souza (2024), and Castiel Brasileiro (2022), who challenge dominant narratives and highlight the importance of occupying public spaces by historically marginalized groups.

"Não espere precisar para apoiar": uso medicinal da maconha e associativismo canábico no Rio Grande do Norte
(Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, 2025-01-31) Donati, Luisa Galvão; Melo, Juliana Gonçalves; http://lattes.cnpq.br/4328813707663376; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-2959-1313; http://lattes.cnpq.br/4044778386280997; Santos, Leonardo Alves dos; Martins, Luana; Neves, Rita de Cassia Maria
This research investigates the individual and collective strategies for accessing the medicinal use of cannabis in Rio Grande do Norte through a qualitative study that also highlights the central role of cannabis associations. Using an ethnographic approach that combines bibliographic research, participant observation, and interviews, the study deepens the understanding of the social and legal dynamics surrounding the therapeutic use of the plant and contextualizes the debate on this issue within the national scenario. It also analyzes how these collaborative networks shape a new legal framework, challenging prohibitionism and constructing narratives that legitimize its therapeutic use. Throughout the process, the disputes, resources, and practices mobilized by users and their families to overcome legal barriers are unveiled. The development of "lay expertise" and the articulation of legal and social actions are highlighted as key strategies. Overall, the results reveal the bureaucratic and stigmatizing challenges faced by those who claim the right to health, the tensions between different strategies of struggle, but also point to advances and the importance of associativism as a form of resistance to ensure the right to health.

This study constitutes an ethnographic investigation of a Commercial Venue for Sexual Encounters (VCSE) located in the city of Natal/RN, Brazil, the establishment known as Cine Vídeo Papai. Organized into two distinct units with varying operating hours, these venues utilize the screening of pornography as a central commercial attraction. By focusing on the spaces where pornography is exhibited, which predominantly attract a cisgender male audience, this dissertation seeks to illuminate a form of erotic and pornographic sociability experienced by men. From this analytical perspective, it interrogates sexual practices through the framework of corporeality, highlighting diverse modes of desire management. Methodologically grounded in the principles of “Groove Anthropology” (Blázquez and Liarte-Ticola, 2018), this research employed participant observation, formal and informal conversations with interlocutors, and photographic documentation. Through this approach, Cine Vídeo Papai emerges as a space that facilitates the production of what is colloquially referred to in the field as “curtição” (a term approximating “enjoyment” or “pleasure”). This concept encompasses the varied ways in which interlocutors navigate and negotiate their desires. Furthermore, the venue is revealed as a territoriality where other symbolic elements - such as urban dynamics, gossip, monetary exchange, and auditory environments - interact with and shape the sexual practices enacted within this space.

The research examines the Pierre Verger Prize's curatorial criteria for selecting ethnographic films, analyzing how the curators' choices dialogue with cultural, social and political issues. Through an ethnography of the 2024 edition, the criteria and challenges involved in this process are explored, revealing curation as a space for mediation between different epistemes and cosmologies, as well as political negotiation. The study also presents the historical relationship between cinema, anthropology and curatorial practices, discussing how these practices operate in the construction and negotiation of cultural and identity meanings. The analysis also considers curation as a field of narrative disputes, in which filmic choices reflect contemporary debates about representation and authorship. Finally, the research explores the political and epistemological role of curation in the anthropological field, highlighting its theoretical and practical implications.

This master's thesis seeks to understand the relationships fostered by the consumption of digital games, electronic devices, and content associated with the gamer universe. For this purpose, the Brazilian Facebook group "Grupo para pessoas pobres com computadores ruins 5.0" was chosen as the primary field of investigation. The group's posts and comments were analyzed through participant observation, perambulações, and acompanhamentos, which facilitated contact with the group's members and led to in-depth interviews. The research reveals that the consumption of these goods and media, goes beyond mere economic transactions, embedding itself within complex sociocultural negotiations. The in-depth analysis allowed for the observation that group participants were constantly navigating and shaped by aesthetic, political, moral, and affective constructions related to consumption—particularly an aesthetic notion of what it means to be both poor and a gamer in Brazil, as well as access to technological goods and digital games in discussions on the morality of consuming “pirated” games.

The research conducted between 2021-2023 aims to comprehend the organization of residents in the Carlos Marighella Occupation (OCM) in Fortaleza/CE, considering the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic since August 2020, the beginning of the occupation. The leading role of women in the occupation is emphasized, as they take the lead in confrontations with the police, participate in demonstrations, create posters, and advocate for dignified housing. In this context, other objectives include documenting the transformations in the occupied urban spaces, using ethnographic drawing as a tool to record and analyze these changes; examining the importance of highlighting memory and instances of violence, as well as community resistance, to understand the unique dynamics of these urban spaces. In the methodology, an ethnographic lens and visual drawings are employed to explore the memories of the interlocutors. The research not only seeks to understand the community's daily life but also to analyze interpersonal relationships, emerging hierarchies, and innovative forms of resistance and collectivity. The central issue explores not only how residents adapt to adverse conditions but also how the experience of the occupation contributes to the reconstruction of community identities, influencing public policies, urban planning, and the understanding of urban social processes in Fortaleza, especially at the unique intersection of the pandemic, occupations, and local social fabric. The results highlight the significance of women as key interlocutors, providing a broadened perspective on housing beyond the physical space. The incorporation of visual anthropology enriches the understanding of the residents' experience, contributing to a more comprehensive and inclusive narrative in the construction of anthropological knowledge.

Since the 70’s until today, various individuals and collectives have been committed to denouncing the stigma against fat bodies, which triggers processes of dehumanization, harassment, and disregard, thus characterizing fatphobia. The present research, based on virtual ethnography in digital media and the mapping of antigordophobia actions and bills with this character, aims to characterize the antigordophobia movement. For this purpose, from an intersectional perspective, some approaches that constitute the Brazilian antigordophobia movement are presented: among them, there are those that are assumed to be radical, others more aligned with certain liberal and market-driven behaviors, as well as approaches linked to the production of academic scientific knowledge. Furthermore, we will discuss the modes of collective organization of the movement based on the analysis of projects focusing on antigordophobia actions in various areas of activity: health; accessibility; fashion, beauty, and self-love; knowledge production; and artistic expressions and leisure. Finally, an analysis is conducted on how the demands of these subjects reach the State. Thus, the aim is to understand how the field is configured, what the disputes and tensions in discourse are, and how these constitute both the field and the subjects who are part of it.

This work investigates, through ethnographic research, the doula circuit in Rio Grande do Norte, taking as an empirical focus the activities promoted and/or attended by those who are associated with the alternative aspect of the Movement for the Humanization of Childbirth. This circuit is currently made up of meetings that have disseminated the ideas of the so-called Natural Gynecology — a sociocultural expression emerging in Latin America in the last two decades that, assuming a critical stance in the face of the presence of a colonial epistemology in hegemonic assistance to women's health, has become popularized through “knowledge exchange” circles, therapeutic experiences and workshops, promoting a particular symbolic system in light of its demands. The research sought to understand how doulas have incorporated the ideas of Natural Gynecology into their narratives and practices, what points of contact this movement has with the Humanization of Childbirth and its own ideas, and what this implies in the construction of the individual trajectories of the interlocutors. This text also highlights the contribution of these agents in the construction of other meanings around bodies and their events, such as gestation, birth and menstruation cycle. This work has particularly appropriated the theoretical and methodological elaborations of Urban Anthropology, Feminist Anthropology and some formulations around the gender axis, other epistemologies and decoloniality produced, above all, by women in the Global South.

The central objective of this writing is to investigate the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the creation and enhancement of virtual devices to combat gender-based violence in Rio Grande do Norte, considering the connections between online and inperson. It specifically aimed to: 1) Understand the process of idealizing the Rio Grande do Norte Virtual Women's Police Station; 2) Understand the process of creating the first application in Rio Grande do Norte to report gender violence; 3) Identify the protocols and paths involved in implementing the reporting of gender violence in the Women's Virtual Police Station and in the researched application. Starting from a theoretical discussion that provides a historical overview of policies to combat violence against women and that is interested in themes related to inequalities, the formation of virtual tools that allow the reporting of gender-based violence online is problematized, thus as well as the protocols of this network and possible changes brought about by such equipment. To this end, it methodologically starts with a survey of state initiatives that aim to connect offline and online environments and with semi-structured interviews with the collaborators listed. In this sense, the work understands, through trajectories from rural origins and social movements, the virtual network as a strategy that seeks to bring together state bodies in the service, reception and combating violence against women network with each other, as well as connecting their equipment. with its target audience: women in situations of violence.
