Master Thesis Processos socioculturais e territoriais indígenas em Ceará Mirim/RN(Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, 2024-12-20) Venâncio, Damião Vieira; Vieira, José Glebson; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-5546-1846; http://lattes.cnpq.br/0513632032515079; http://lattes.cnpq.br/3502270468109469; Miller, Francisca de Souza; https://orcid.org/0009-0000-8879-5482; http://lattes.cnpq.br/6834637163914977; Cavignac, Julie Antoinette; https://orcid.org/0000-0003-0192-1103; http://lattes.cnpq.br/2111200163433960; Araújo, Carlos Eduardo de; Durazzo, Leandro Marques; https://orcid.org/0000-0001-5160-2835; http://lattes.cnpq.br/9012872558274565The historiography of Brazil's indigenous populations is always marked by a Eurocentric colonizing vision, which necessarily implies a movement of conquest and exploitation, the result of which is the affirmation of the extinction of these societies or the assimilation of the indigenous people into the regional culture, in the latter case creating the figure of the caboclo or the sertanejo. This constant lack of elements that, taken together, end up not providing information about a past that has not been recorded in history books or other literature, attempts to contradict the existence of a people who lived here and were forced to deny their own existence in order to maintain their survival. This research aims to address the indigenous issue in a municipality in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, based on discussions involving territorialization, the process of invisibilization over the centuries, ethnicity and the struggle for rights. In this way, the aim is to investigate indigenous resistance in communities located in the municipality of Ceará-Mirim/RN (Rio dos Índios, Lagoa Grande and Ponta do Mato), using the analysis of their history, the social relations developed there and the form of sociopolitical organization articulated with the demands. Given the context of the demands made by these communities, the aim is to understand how the process of ethnic-political organization of the indigenous people has been taking place, and its possible constructions, with a view to strengthening ethnic identity.Doctoral Thesis "A mesma droga, mas com uma nova tecnologia": uma análise dos processos de regulamentação de Cannabis como uma tecnologia de saúde no Brasil(Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, 2025-12-22) Caetano, Hellen Monique dos Santos; Valle, Carlos Guilherme Octaviano do; http://lattes.cnpq.br/7578005376543804; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-5510-3651; http://lattes.cnpq.br/1995227800222951; Silva, Rosana Maria Nascimento Castro; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-1069-4785; http://lattes.cnpq.br/3701781668123111; Navia, Angela Mercedes Facundo; https://orcid.org/0000-0001-9552-5763; http://lattes.cnpq.br/9174852118966092; Rêgo, Francisco Cleiton Vieira Silva do; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-8852-6212; http://lattes.cnpq.br/4438529628551741; Mendonça Filho, Frederico Policarpo de; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-0162-390X; http://lattes.cnpq.br/5092451102102943; Silva, Martinho Braga Batista e; https://orcid.org/0000-0003-3577-958X; http://lattes.cnpq.br/6530523453818209; Neves, Rita De Cassia Maria; https://orcid.org/0000-0003-0507-8336; http://lattes.cnpq.br/9446999089598991The use of Cannabis in health treatments gained prominence starting in 2014, through a public complaint made by patients and their families. This complex scenario was built from tensions and stigmas associated with marijuana as a fluid substance. Because of this, institutions such as the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa), the Federal Council of Medicine (CFM), the National Congress, and the Federal Supreme Court (STF) became key players in the debate about the regulatory status of Cannabis and its derivatives, building a process of co-production. Thus, the objective of this thesis was to investigate the regulatory processes surrounding Cannabis as a health technology. From a qualitative approach, procedural documents produced by the institutions were analyzed, including technical notes, bills, and resolutions, as well as documentation artifacts such as public hearings and plenaries, focusing on the discussion about the therapeutic use of Cannabis and its derivatives. The analysis of these materials, including a survey of journalistic articles, was performed in a qualitative analysis program, Atlas.ti, through data coding. The results show how the arguments raised in documents and hearings go beyond an objective technical and scientific discussion, constructing regulatory distinctions that emerge in spaces of negotiation and dispute, considering broader processes involving stigmas, moralities, and control mechanisms. The distinctions between drugs, products, medicines, patients, and users are not neutral nomenclatures, but co-created categories that promote practical implications in access to Cannabis-derived substances. The regulatory distinctions and the hierarchy among groups of specialists reveal how the measures adopted so far are transitory and precarious and do not guarantee effective access to health treatment. The data collected show how public health and public safety are constructed as fields of dispute, where perceptions of risk and moralities are managed, revealing a co-production between science, politics, and the making of technologies. In this co-production process, what stands out is how institutional decisions, based on Science and its products, impact the daily lives of patientsDoctoral Thesis Quando os/as artistas foram às aldeias: repertórios tradicionais e mediação musical no Brasil(Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, 2020-06-29) Silva, Bruno Ronald Andrade da; Vieira, José Glebson; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-5546-1846; http://lattes.cnpq.br/0513632032515079; http://lattes.cnpq.br/0963939566019792; Valle, Carlos Guilherme Octaviano do; Cavignac, Julie Antoinette; Neves, Rita de Cássia Maria; Noleto, Rafael da Silva; Pereira, Edmundo Marcelo MendesConsidering the work undertaken by agents in Brazil who were based on indigenous musicalities, I seek to analyze the sound mediations of two artists linked to distinct musical formations, Kilza Setti and Marlui Miranda. They enabled mediation channels, fueled by varied works regarding the collection of traditional musicalities made, most of the time, by themselves in field trips. I seek to debate from each case (sometimes in a comparative way) the organization of the collected materials, the ways of treatment and selection of repertoires, the registration modalities and musical recreation, which headed to make indigenous musicalities visible and audible to the non-indigenous audience and to the indigenous people themselves. The collection activity streamlined considerable part of artistic works, while incited their actions beyond the musical sphere. Thus, their actions in other intellectual and political fields through which the artists transited come into examination. Summarily, the aim of the present work is turned to the relations between non-indigenous artists and indigenous people; what (and how) brazillian artists did when they applied to use indigenous musical arrangements. I seek to map the exercise of mediation of the artists in the production and negotiation of meanings and senses on sound materials which come from traditional groups, in order to elaborate plots about musical aesthetics, sound registrations, copywright, cultural production, formation of collections and educational practices. The thesis is based on long-term interviews made with the mentioned artists and on analyzing cultural products and societal experiences that come from these relations. Doctoral Thesis "Fazendo a luta": trajetórias, resistências e lutas de mulheres lideranças quilombolas no Rio Grande do Norte(Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, 2023-03-31) Lima, Ivanildo Antonio de; Schwade, Elisete; Lopes, Paulo Victor Leite; Navia, Angela Mercedes Facundo; Porto, Rozeli Maria; Antunes, Marta de Oliveira; Freire, Maira Samara de LimaThe visibility given to studies on quilombola communities is a recent construction, resulting from the processes of identity reconstruction of the groups, the struggle for rights and the recognition of these populations by the Brazilian State through the 1988 Constitution. In Rio Grande do Norte, the emergence process ethnic group begins in the 2000s with the joint work of the Ministry of Agrarian Development (MDA), the National Institute of Colonization and Agrarian Reform (INCRA) and the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte State in the preparation of Anthropological Reports, allowing the emergence of numerous quilombola groups fighting for the titling and recognition of territories by these occupied groups. The moment is characterized by the flowering of a questioning about the lack of records of the quilombola populations in Rio Grande do Norte, as historians such as Luís da Câmara Cascudo, stated that the black people did not have a great influence on culture and on the formation of the state, influencing negatively the production of studies on the black presence in RN State. Taking into account the production in Anthropology, realizing a lack of theoretical discussions in dealing with quilombola issues, some researchers trained in the PGGAS started to deal with the subject, mainly, dialoguing about general aspects related to the theme, little being discussed the role of women in these territories marked by struggles and resistance. Realizing that there is a gap in Anthropology studies on the role of quilombola women within their territories, this thesis aims to dialogue with women who act as quilombola leaders in Rio Grande do Norte and from their trajectories as local representatives, seek to understand the central role of these leaders in the struggle for the territories to which they belong. Thus, I established a dialogue with five quilombola women from different communities in the State of Rio Grande do Norte (Capoeiras, Grossos, Gameleiras de Baixo, Boa Vista dos Negros and Moita Verde). With the support bibliographical research, interviews and the use of the trajectories of life of these interlocutors, seeking to understand the Daly life of the women surveyed.Doctoral Thesis (In)gerindo uma política de prevenção: etnografia da PrEP na biomedicalização da resposta ao HIV no Rio Grande do Norte, Brasil(Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, 2025-06-27) Silva Junior, Fernando Joaquim da; Valle, Carlos Guilherme Octaviano do; Rêgo, Francisco Cleiton Vieira Silva do; Oliveira, Kris Herik de; Neves, Rita de Cassia Maria; Porto, Rozeli Maria; Monteiro, Simone SouzaThis anthropological research investigates how the national public policy for HIV prevention, through PrEP, is established within a historical and social context of the biomedicalization of life, which began in the 20th century. At the same time, the study focuses on the intimate and everyday relationships that take shape in the public sphere of Natal, capital of Rio Grande do Norte, in Northeastern Brazil. Along this path, the cracks, challenges, and nuances of this policy are revealed, recognizing that the complexity of lived experience is composed of multiple agencies—collective and individual, formalized or not—imposing, in various ways, notions of “access,” “adherence,” and “use” of PrEP. The production and analysis of anthropological data were supported by participant observation in intense friction between my own experiences and those of my interlocutors in both in-person contexts and through technological means of interaction, such as Grindr and WhatsApp. In addition, the analysis of official documents from the Ministry of Health and publicly available information provided by health managers and professionals in Natal proved indispensable. In the first chapter, I retrieve and reintegrate PrEP into its broader context, drawing on a historical and social panorama of HIV and AIDS in the “era of biomedicalization,” tracing parallels between global and national dynamics and highlighting challenges such as setbacks in funding and the precarization of civil organizations. In the second, I analyze the consolidation of PrEP as both a product of “scientific evidence” and a public policy instrument, through the examination of Clinical Protocols, Therapeutic Guidelines, and the clinical trials that supported its incorporation by the Federal Government. The third chapter adopts an anthropological perspective to investigate the implementation of public policy in Natal (RN), showing how political, social, economic, and municipal management processes affect the quality of services and the experiences of interlocutors seeking access to PEP, PrEP, and STI treatment. Finally, the fourth chapter proposes an integrated analysis of the interfaces between public policies, prevention practices, and the experiences of everyday and societal life, presenting the multiple layers of the social world of prevention in Natal and highlighting the internal and social reasons that guide interlocutors toward both adherence to and refusal of PrEP—from distrust and moral panic to the circulation of misinformation and rumors, elements that can lead to biographical ruptures and transform the ways of “doing Prevention”.Doctoral Thesis Agricultura familiar no Rio Grande do Norte: uma etnografia das políticas e ações governamentais(Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, 2024-09-06) Feitosa, Rianna de Carvalho; Cavignac, Julie Antoinette; https://orcid.org/0000-0003-0192-1103; http://lattes.cnpq.br/2111200163433960; https://orcid.org/0000-0001-6792-2489; http://lattes.cnpq.br/3616078542543329; Braga, Geslline Giovana; http://lattes.cnpq.br/1732056340724983; Azevedo, Francisco Fransualdo de; http://lattes.cnpq.br/2719998085102847; Barretto Filho, Henyo Trindade; https://orcid.org/0000-0003-3845-9936; http://lattes.cnpq.br/5380440486115207; Barbosa, Isabela Maria Pereira; http://lattes.cnpq.br/8759685607910256; Ramiro, Patricia Alves; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-6917-6106; http://lattes.cnpq.br/7155476977488017This thesis investigates the dynamic nature of family farming, considering it as a contested category. The aim is to explore the various understandings and uses of the category and to monitor governmental actions aimed at strengthening this sector in Northeast Brazil, with an emphasis on the state of Rio Grande do Norte. The work includes a literature review, participation in events, fairs, seminars, and meetings, interviews with political actors, and analysis of social situations, forming a multi-sited ethnography. The results presented histories, social meanings, advances, weaknesses, potentialities, and controversies surrounding the category from the investigation of different interpretations and interests that surround it. It was also possible to perceive the influence of the imagistic-discursive process about the Brazilian northeast in the construction and understanding of the category and reflect on its impact on public policies and governmental actions designed for the segment. I also argue the role that the anthropic environmental crisis and climate change impose, creating additional challenges and highlighting the need for specific adaptation and support for the agrarian space in Northeast Brazil. In this context, the modernization and mechanization of agriculture, including the cooperation agreement with Chinese universities to develop agricultural machines adapted to small properties, point to possible solutions, responses, and futures. Thus, I argue that the category “family farmer” is used and understood in different ways by various social, political, and institutional actors. The concept is not fixed but is in constant transformation and negotiation, being shaped by various histories and social construction processes, which give rise to different social meanings and controversies. These different interpretations also influence the way policies and governmental actions aimed at the segment are formulated and implemented.Doctoral Thesis Transe dos tambores: a encruzilhada do batuque na cidade do Natal (RN)(Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, 2025-07-22) Nunes, Felipe da Silva; Assunção, Luiz Carvalho de; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-0718-0492; http://lattes.cnpq.br/6232503538224768; http://lattes.cnpq.br/6879270640955457; http://lattes.cnpq.br/6879270640955457; Freitas, Eliane Tania Martins de; http://lattes.cnpq.br/8202430744079222; Braga, Geslline Giovana; http://lattes.cnpq.br/1732056340724983; Coradini, Lisabete; http://lattes.cnpq.br/3559843462349247; Silva, Bruno Goulart Machado; http://lattes.cnpq.br/6189970364530407; Morais, Mariana Ramos de; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-1604-2366; http://lattes.cnpq.br/5527915887873401The state of Rio Grande do Norte is home to a wide diversity of cultural manifestations rooted in percussive rhythms, such as Coco de Roda, Maracatu, Zambê, Bambelô, among others. Over time, these popular cultural expressions have gradually lost the central role they once held in the state's cultural scene. In recent years, however, a new percussive scene has emerged in the city of Natal, composed of groups, collectives, and gatherings of enthusiasts who occupy public spaces, organizing themselves around what they call batuque. This research aims to identify and map this scene, understanding batuque as a central sonic element that structures musical performances of Afro-Indigenous heritage in Rio Grande do Norte. By outlining this landscape, the study seeks to highlight the networks and sociabilities formed among batuqueiros and other cultural agents, examining, through the lens of ontopolitics, how these sonic expressions challenge colonial normativities regarding the body, time, and territory, thus opening paths to understand them as forms of existence and political enunciation.Master Thesis A mata do Catu como lugar de memória(Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, 2024-12-13) Oliveira, Meyriane Costa de; Cavignac, Julie Antoinette; https://orcid.org/0000-0003-0192-1103; http://lattes.cnpq.br/2111200163433960; http://lattes.cnpq.br/8888725166631153; Neves, Rita de Cássia Maria; https://orcid.org/0000-0003-0507-8336; http://lattes.cnpq.br/9446999089598991; Lewitzki, Taisa; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-5098-6598; http://lattes.cnpq.br/0538615422731487; Palitot, EstevãoThe objective of this work is to investigate and record the memories of the Catu dos Eleotérios indigenous community, woven into their relationship with the forest, associating life stories and narratives about nature. From an ethnographic perspective, we collected oral records from members of the indigenous community about the space traditionally occupied by the group, and we analyzed oral narratives about stories of enchantment experienced in the community's memory sites during extractive practices – such as the collection of a fruit called mangaba, vines and natural remedies – transmitted through oral tradition by elders, healers, gatherers and herbalist women. During the research, we observed that the oral tradition in the territory is at risk of disappearing due to the threats that the community has suffered, such as river pollution and deforestation caused by the advance of sugarcane monoculture, and the displacement of village residents to urban centers. We conclude that these problems affect the preservation of the fauna and flora of Catu, limit access to natural resources for carrying out productive activities and, consequently, threaten the maintenance of its memories and the conservation of other cultural practices observed in the community.
