It is a scoping review conducted according to the methodology of the Joanna Briggs Institute and PRISMA-ScR, which allows for the identification and understanding of academic, institutional, sociocultural, and economic aspects that impact the mental health of university students. The methodology employed involved the careful selection of scientific articles and specialized literature, using the academic databases PubMed, LILACS, and SciELO between the years 2018 and 2025. The research question was: how do neoliberal rationalities and the productivist logic that structure contemporary higher education produce and reinforce processes of objectification, dehumanization, and historical invisibility of mental suffering among undergraduate students? The strategy used, focusing on facilitating the conversion of the research question into a search strategy, was PCC (Araújo et al., 2020). The acronym stands for: P – Population; C – Concept; and C – Context. Population (P): Undergraduate university students; Concept (C): Factors associated with psychological distress and mental illness; Context (C): Academic environment and institutional strategies for supporting mental health. The studies analyzed indicate that, although the academic environment presents challenges such as excessive competitiveness, pressure for performance, and overload of activities, the psychological distress of students is deeply rooted in broader conditions, such as socioeconomic vulnerability, weakening of social bonds, consumerism, and transformations in forms of sociability in current societies. Furthermore, prejudice, symbolic and material violence, deprivation, identity crises, and difficulties within the family are revealed as important factors that permeate the lives of students and directly influence their academic well-being. The findings reinforce the need for intersectoral public policies—involving education, health, social assistance, and human rights—to promote integrated prevention and care actions. It is concluded that building a healthier environment for students necessarily requires a systemic and coordinated approach across different sectors of society, aiming to create a suitable and welcoming environment for the training of future professionals.Doctoral Thesis Análise da morbidade hospitalar por doenças cardiovasculares no Brasil: um estudo de série temporal de 2008 a 2024(Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, 2026-01-23) Tritany, Érika Fernandes; Andrade, Fábia Barbosa de; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7055-8726; http://lattes.cnpq.br/0315846984480655; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7099-4800; http://lattes.cnpq.br/5138281380215568; Mendonça, Ana Elza Oliveira de; https://orcid.org/0000-0001-9015-211X; http://lattes.cnpq.br/5531967242281430; Coelho, Ardigleusa Alves; https://orcid.org/0000-0001-8869-3793; http://lattes.cnpq.br/2622051143015642; Holanda, Eliane Rolim de; https://orcid.org/0000-0001-6433-9271; http://lattes.cnpq.br/1613641327840136; Machado, Flávia Christiane de Azevedo; http://lattes.cnpq.br/0790763211909338Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of mortality and disability in Brazil and worldwide. Among premature deaths due to chronic diseases, 38% are attributable to these conditions. They are influenced by social, environmental, behavioral, and metabolic factors, requiring comprehensive care delivered through health care networks and diverse technologies. This study aims to analyze hospital morbidity due to cardiovascular diseases in Brazil over the time series from 2008 to 2024. This is an ecological, analytical, time-series study using data from the Hospital Information System, made available by the Department of Information and Informatics of the Brazilian Unified Health System. Hospital admissions classified under Chapter IX of ICD-10 between 2008 and 2024 were included. Data collection and updating were conducted in April 2025. Hospital admissions were considered the dependent variables. Independent variables included length of hospital stay, hospitalization costs, sex, race/skin color, age group (30–49 years), and cause of admission (acute myocardial infarction and stroke). Data were analyzed using the Joinpoint Regression Program to estimate linear regression models and assess temporal trends. The hospitalization rate for cardiovascular diseases in Brazil increased from 573.28 admissions per 100,000 inhabitants in 2008 to 623.58 in 2024. The lowest rate was recorded in 2021, at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, with 480.24 admissions per 100,000 inhabitants. Hospitalization costs increased throughout the entire period in Brazil and across regions. An increase in length of hospital stay was observed, from 3,706.36 hospital-days per 100,000 inhabitants in 2008 to a peak of 4,010.22 hospitaldays per 100,000 inhabitants in 2024, indicating that despite periods of declining admissions, costs continued to rise, suggesting greater severity of hospitalizations. Sex-specific analyses showed similar overall temporal trends in admissions; however, males exhibited higher rates, while the decline during the pandemic period and the subsequent increase after 2021 were more pronounced among females, indicating sex-based disparities in cardiovascular care. Among individuals classified as White, admissions declined until 2021, followed by an increase. For those classified as Brown (mixed race), the predominant trend was increasing admissions, whereas among Black individuals, alternating trends of increase and decrease were observed over time, suggesting racial inequalities and the need to improve health records. The 30–49-year age group showed a marked declining trend until 2021, followed by an upward trend, underscoring the need for cardiovascular prevention policies targeting younger adults. Hospitalizations due to stroke showed an overall increasing trend, with a period of decline in Brazil and in the North and Northeast regions that encompassed the early pandemic years. Admissions for acute myocardial infarction increased significantly throughout the entire period in Brazil and across regions. In conclusion, hospitalizations due to these conditions, as well as associated costs and length of stay, showed an increasing trend between 2008 and 2024 in Brazil and its regions, highlighting the need to strengthen health promotion and cardiovascular prevention policies. Sex and race-based differences reveal persistent inequalities and emphasize the importance of improving the quality of health records, with attention to regional trends, reinforcing the relevance of strengthening health care networks and the central role of primary health care in cardiovascular health careDoctoral Thesis Reabilitação baseada em exercícios físicos pós internação em UTI(Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, 2025-03-28) Pinto, Edson Fonseca; Piuvezam, Grasiela; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-2343-7251; http://lattes.cnpq.br/0391780760729166; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-4887-292X; http://lattes.cnpq.br/3208210405876273; Knackfuss, Maria Irany; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-4225-4901; http://lattes.cnpq.br/8414353396087915; Dantas, Paulo Moreira Silva; http://lattes.cnpq.br/0392766010188739; Nobre, Thaiza Teixeira Xavier; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-8673-0009; http://lattes.cnpq.br/2813639308023253; Felipe, Thiago Renee; http://lattes.cnpq.br/7036978055275305Introduction: Post-hospitalization physical rehabilitation in Intensive Care Unit (ICU) patients plays a fundamental role in recovering functionality and quality of life. During hospitalization, prolonged immobility combined with the severity of the clinical condition can result in muscle weakness, reduced cardiovascular capacity, and impairments in respiratory functions. Implementing physical exercises during and after hospitalization can be crucial to mitigate these effects and promote effective rehabilitation. Objective: This study aimed to analyze the effectiveness of a physical rehabilitation program in patients who underwent prolonged ICU stays. Methodology: Various theoretical-methodological approaches were adopted, organizing the review as follows: (a) Cardiopulmonary and Functional Rehabilitation in COVID-19 Survivors; (b) Effects of a Physical Rehabilitation Program on the Physical Fitness of PostCOVID Individuals: a Protocol for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis; (c) Rehabilitation Through Physical Exercise in Post-COVID Individuals: a Systematic Review; and (d) A Randomized Experimental Study on the Impact of an Exercise-Based Rehabilitation Program after Prolonged ICU Stay. Results: In the general editorial article, it was proposed that postCOVID-19 rehabilitation begin within the first three months, aiming to improve lung function, exercise tolerance, and reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression. Evaluating health conditions and creating a personalized program is essential for the patient's functional and emotional return to society. The systematic review article indicated that physical activity is effective in the rehabilitation of people recovering from COVID-19, promoting physical, physiological, and psychological improvements. Strength training, with exercises for both upper and lower limbs, had the most significant impact, with three sets of 10 repetitions recommended, complementing respiratory training. In the randomized experimental study, results revealed significant differences in the 6-minute walk test (6MWT) between the GEm and GEmTMI groups before the intervention (p=0.043) and in the Physical Activity Index (IPAQ) after the intervention (p=0.002). For the total group (GEm + GEmTMI), significant improvements were observed in all variables analyzed after the six-week program, including quality of life (SF-36), functional capacity (PCFS), physical activity level (IPAQ), respiratory muscle strength, among others. Notable improvements were seen in SF-36 parameters (Physical Functioning: p=0.006 and Social Functioning: p=0.009), PCFS (p=0.011), IPAQ (p=0.012), and in the 6MWT (m), 5Rep-Seg Test, 1min TSL, TUG, Manual Grip (Right), Manual Grip (Left), PEmáx and PImáx tests, all with p<0.001. Conclusion: Physical rehabilitation based on multicomponent exercises, with or without inspiratory muscle training, resulted in significant improvements in physical activity levels, functional capacity, dynamic balance, neuromuscular fitness, respiratory strength, and quality of life in patients, both in physical and social aspects.Master Thesis Classificação funcional e mortalidade em pessoas idosas: um estudo baseado na CIF e na capacidade intrínseca(Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, 2025-12-09) Faria, Bárbara Brenda de Araújo; Câmara, Saionara Maria Aires da; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-0544-7480; http://lattes.cnpq.br/8437063945554904; Ruaro, João Afonso; Nobre, Thaiza Teixeira XavierIntroduction: Both the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) and the concept of intrinsic capacity (IC) aim to compile the main aspects of human functionality. Understanding the predictive capacity to identify more vulnerable people can inform health practices and policies. Aim: To analyze the capacity of an ICF core set and IC to predict mortality in community-dwelling older adults after a six-year followup. Methods: This is a longitudinal observational study, developed in the city of Santa Cruz (RN), with 101 older adults (≥60 years). Sociodemographic data, physical health assessment (ICF core set), and IC assessment in four domains were collected (cognitive: Leganés Cognitive Test; psychological: Center for Epidemiological Studies; locomotion: Short Physical Performance Battery; and vitality: grip strength manual). Occurrence of death up to 6 years after the initial assessment was obtained through the Mortality Information System. Data were analyzed using Spearman's correlation test and MannWhitney test. To assess the association between the impairment/problem index (ICF), CI, and mortality, logistic regression, adjusted for sex and age, was applied. In all analyses, a significant level of p < 0.05 was adopted. Results: 13 elderly people (12.9%) died over 6 years. There was a significant low to moderate correlation between all domains of the ICF core set and the CI score, except for the "Health services". The results for CI and the core set were significantly worse among the participants who died. Considering the regression models, the total ICF index was positively associated with mortality (p = 0.02). CI showed a marginally significant result (p = 0.05). Conclusion: The results suggest that both strategies proved useful for assessment in clinical practice and research, allowing for the early detection of modifiable factors that impact the functionality and mortality of older adults, reinforcing the importance of multidimensional assessment approaches for promoting healthy aging.Doctoral Thesis Avaliação da morbidade e mortalidade hospitalar por câncer de mama e de colo do útero em mulheres no Brasil no período de 2010 a 2022(Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, 2024-10-25) Ferreira, Haryelle Naryma Confessor; Andrade, Fábia Barbosa de; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7055-8726; http://lattes.cnpq.br/0315846984480655; http://lattes.cnpq.br/3004243177207613; Costa, Cintia Bezerra Almeida; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-1179-5852; http://lattes.cnpq.br/6281513299605740; Mendes, Cristina Katya Torres Teixeira; Machado, Flávia Christiane de Azevedo; Nobre, Thaiza Teixeira XavierBreast and cervical cancer are a serious public health problem worldwide. Early screening, identification and treatment are generally the most widely used means of reducing morbidity and mortality. In Brazil, difficulties in accessing the public health system lead to diagnoses at more advanced stages of cancer and therefore require more aggressive therapeutic approaches that can result in functional, emotional and social sequelae. This study aims to evaluate hospital morbidity and mortality from breast and uterine cancer in relation to Brazilian regions between 2010 and 2022. This is an ecological time series study carried out from 2010 to 2022 using data on hospital admissions and deaths, both in the public domain and stored in the Ministry of Health's DATASUS. The data was analyzed using the Joinpoint Regression program to obtain linear regression and temporal analysis of the variables. In relation to screening for these diseases, it was observed that mammograms and preventive exams showed similar behavior, with a greater supply of these exams until 2019 and a drop during the pandemic period. The results show that between 2010 and 2022, mammography rates ranged from 36 to 71 exams, while Pap smear rates ranged from 126 to 226 cytopathological exams per 1,000 women. Hospitalizations for breast cancer accounted for 147 hospitalizations per 100,000 women and for cervical cancer peaked in 2019, with 48 hospitalizations for the same population. For both, in the years of the pandemic, between 2020 and 2022, there is a drop in hospitalizations in Brazil and in all its regions. Mapping the spatial and temporal distribution of these neoplasms is directly related to human interventions and contributes to cancer control measures. In addition, an increasing trend was observed in the number of deaths related to breast cancer in the Southeast and South regions, as well as cervical cancer in the North and Northeast regions, probably reflecting poorer living and health conditions, less availability of resources and lower primary care coverage. We believe it is important to rethink the priorities in clinical practice and management of the SUS, considering the work process beyond the discussion of therapeutic improvement strategies, but also including the biopsychosocial aspects of women with breast and uterine cancer in the local context, in order to guarantee equity and comprehensive health care. We conclude that although Brazil has several public policies for screening for these diseases, there is still instability in the supply of these tests, reinforcing the weaknesses of the care network and the changes needed in the organization and quality of the services provided.Doctoral Thesis Sífilis gestacional: análise de séries temporais e completude de dados de notificação(Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, 2025-07-21) Raimundo, Dhyanine Morais de Lima; Mendonça, Ana Elza Oliveira de; Silva, Richardson Augusto Rosendo da; https://orcid.org/0000-0001-6290-9365; http://lattes.cnpq.br/2184669241700299; https://orcid.org/0000-0001-9015-211X; http://lattes.cnpq.br/5531967242281430; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-9723-705X; http://lattes.cnpq.br/1620761600111705; D'Eça Júnior, Aurean; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7675-412X; http://lattes.cnpq.br/0189626732900928; Menezes, Harlon França de; https://orcid.org/0000-0001-9884-6511; http://lattes.cnpq.br/2403572724219824; Santiago, Janmilli da Costa Dantas; https://orcid.org/0000-0001-5429-6108; http://lattes.cnpq.br/2216990944016249; Nobre, Thaiza Teixeira Xavier; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-8673-0009; http://lattes.cnpq.br/2813639308023253Objective: To analyze the temporal trends, case projections, and completeness of gestational syphilis reporting. Methods: Both articles used secondary data from SINAN. The first article analyzed time series from 2019 to 2022 and projections with data from the state of Rio Grande do Norte until 2025, including all reported cases of gestational syphilis. Analyses were performed using Pearson's chi-square test (χ²) to verify the existence of an association between the categorical variables of the study, with a significance level of 5% (p < 0.05). The assessment of the completeness of gestational syphilis cases was performed using a longitudinal design between 2008 and 2024 in Brazil. Each completeness rate was classified according to data quality as excellent (<5%), good (5-10%), fair (10-20%), poor (20-50%), and very poor (≥50%). Completeness analysis was based on reports from 2008 to 2024 in Brazil, assessing the percentage of missed reports and classifying completeness as excellent, good, or poor. Results: The time trend study revealed a high percentage of late diagnoses, especially in the third trimester of pregnancy, indicating possible failures in prenatal care. The analysis points to a significant association between gestational syphilis cases and the clinical classification of the syphilis stage, the therapeutic regimen, and the lack of adequate treatment for pregnant women's partners. Regarding completeness, the variables education level and clinical classification showed a consistent pattern of high incompleteness throughout the series, classifying them as poor. Despite this, race and clinical classification showed a significant downward trend in incompleteness, indicating progressive improvement in the completeness of this information. The non-treponemal test, however, showed worsening trends, with a significant increase in incompleteness. Conclusion: The findings of this study emphasize the need for a multidisciplinary and intersectoral approach to addressing gestational syphilis in Rio Grande do Norte. Furthermore, the country lacks better reporting to effectively manage actions aimed at preventing gestational syphilis.Master Thesis Cárie dentária e fatores associados em estudantes universitários com deficiência da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte(Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, 2025-08-06) Lucena, Túlio de Araújo; Mendes, Tamires Carneiro de Oliveira; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7254-4096; http://lattes.cnpq.br/0917383175974279; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-2308-0432; http://lattes.cnpq.br/0709738414998081; Noro, Luiz Roberto Augusto; https://orcid.org/0000-0001-8244-0154; http://lattes.cnpq.br/2335211528795775; Pinto, Rafaela da Silveira; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-6169-7708; http://lattes.cnpq.br/6966526416794160In Brazil, the population with disabilities accounts for approximately 8.9%, exhibiting significant inequalities in access to and quality of health services, including oral health. This study aimed to evaluate the situation of dental caries and its associated factors among university students with disabilities at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN), assisted by the Secretariat of Inclusion and Accessibility. It is a cross-sectional observational study, with data collected through structured interviews and clinical dental examinations, using the DMF-T index to assess caries experience, along with the Oral Impacts on Daily Performance (OIDP) instrument to evaluate subjective perception of oral health. The sample consisted of 43 university students with different types of disabilities, predominantly physical disabilities (44.2%) and Autism Spectrum Disorder (32.6%). Most participants were aged 26 years or older (58.1%), male (55.8%), and selfidentified as Black (51.2%). The DMFT index showed a mean of 8.58 (SD = 6.56) and a median of 9, with an interquartile range between 3 and 13. Results showed a significant association between age and caries experience (p = 0.001), highlighting the cumulative nature of oral damage. It was also observed that recent dental care seeking (p = 0.003) and negative evaluations of received treatment (p = 0.006) were related to higher DMF-T scores, suggesting a reactive and unsatisfactory pattern of care. Furthermore, psychosocial aspects, such as stress related to oral condition (p = 0.012) and embarrassment to smile or speak (p = 0.004), showed a strong correlation with poorer oral health. Detailed tooth analysis revealed greater involvement of posterior teeth, especially molars, reinforcing the need for targeted preventive strategies in these regions. The findings underscore the complexity of oral health among university students with disabilities, emphasizing that dental caries is not merely a clinical marker but an indicator of inequalities and barriers faced by this population in academic and health contexts. Finally, the importance of integrated interventions addressing clinical, social, and psychosocial dimensions is highlighted to promote equity and full inclusion of these students, strengthening public policies and fostering more welcoming and effective care practices.Master Thesis Efeitos da curcumina em mulheres com sindrome pré-menstrual: uma revisão sistemática(Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, 2025-06-06) Fernandes, Anny Karoliny Pinheiro; Piuvezam, Grasiela; Medeiros, Gidyenne Christine Bandeira Silva de; https://orcid.org/0000-0001-5225-385X; http://lattes.cnpq.br/7128174927654982; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-2343-7251; http://lattes.cnpq.br/0391780760729166; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-6091-7529; http://lattes.cnpq.br/4427197731412125; Araújo, Célia Regina Barbosa de; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-9650-3870; http://lattes.cnpq.br/3197089693483877; Capucho, Helaine Carneiro; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-5438-7963; http://lattes.cnpq.br/0079781302123191; Mirabal, Isabelle Ribeiro Barbosa; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-1385-2849; http://lattes.cnpq.br/0211762022010569Many women of reproductive age say that the luteal phase is a delicate and peculiar time, as it is a period when they experience hormonal fluctuations that trigger physical, psychological, and behavioral symptoms, negatively affecting their emotional, social, and occupational environments. Such discomforts, which manifest themselves weeks before the menstrual period and are relieved after the onset of menstruation, are clinical characteristics of premenstrual syndrome (PMS), also popularly known as premenstrual tension (PMT). Given the numerous treatments available to improve symptoms, women have preferred more natural approaches, through physical exercise, proper nutrition, vitamins, and supplements. Thus, among natural interventions, curcumin stands out as an alternative for women who are more sensitive to PMS symptoms. In this perspective, the objective is to synthesize the scientific evidence on the effectiveness of curcumin supplementation in women sensitive to PMS symptoms through a systematic review. This study is a systematic review registered in the PROSPERO database (CRD420251022573), developed in accordance with the guidelines described by the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews PRISMA-P. The electronic research databases selected for the search were PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science-Main Collection, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Studies, and Clinical Trials, in December 2024. In addition, 623 bibliographic references were found, of which eleven studies were selected for full reading. After careful screening, six articles were included in the current Systematic Review. These studies highlight the relevance of curcumin in women's health, acting on hormone regulation and reducing oxidative stress, thus attenuating physical, behavioral, and emotional symptoms. Therefore, based on scientific findings, it is concluded that curcumin has a positive effect on PMS symptoms.Doctoral Thesis Avaliação longitudinal da condição periodontal em idosos institucionalizados e não institucionalizados(Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, 2019-10-11) Costa, Anderson Nicolly Fernandes da; Lima, Kenio Costa de; Freitas, Yan Nogueira Leite de; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-5843-4878; http://lattes.cnpq.br/2433847214117166; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-5668-4398; http://lattes.cnpq.br/5835673385014578; http://lattes.cnpq.br/0874839877343975; Piuvezam, Grasiela; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-2343-7251; http://lattes.cnpq.br/0391780760729166; Lins, Ruthineia Diógenes Alves Uchôa; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-0047-5976; http://lattes.cnpq.br/4462076152744400; Godoy, Gustavo Pina; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7648-0683; http://lattes.cnpq.br/5655149996985928; Cavalcanti, Yuri Wanderley; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-3570-9904; http://lattes.cnpq.br/1303695205442802As changes in the oral cavity that occur in aging lead to physiological changes that predispose the elderly to develop periodontal diseases, which is the most common condition. Given the above, this research sought to investigate a periodontal condition in institutionalized and non-institutionalized elderly from philanthropic and private institutions. This research is characterized by a prospective cohort (four years) qualified for 128 elderly, 94 non-institutionalized and 34 institutionalized elderly. Most of the elderly were diagnosed with periodontics in cases I/II and grade A. The periodontal condition of the elderly worsened the lesions of institutionalized use or not with reduced gingival bleeding, dental calculus, shallow and deep periodontal pocket. As latent variables created from the periodontal condition were periodically affected, sequelae of periodontal disease and advanced periodontal disease. There was a significant relationship (p <0.05) between functional capacity and the factors Initial periodontal disease and Advanced periodontal disease. The worsening of the periodontal disease factor was associated with the variables institutionalization, diabetes and cognitive ability. It was concluded that in relation to periodontal diagnosis, most of the elderly presents a higher prevalence of periodontics in recent groups and granules, as well as the elderly who were not institutionalized, non-diabetic and oriented to stamp related to the worsening of the advanced periodontal disease factor.
