The consumption of comfort food is a prime example of this, as it is not eaten to satisfy hunger, but rather to evoke specific emotional and psychological sensations and foster social bonds. Despite its relevance, there is still no consensus on a definition of comfort food in the literature. The objective of this thesis is therefore to clarify and deepen our understanding of comfort food by analysing its concept, the contexts in which it is used and the foods that comprise this category, as well as the factors associated with its consumption. The results are presented in three articles. The first study is divided into two articles: a protocol and a scoping review. This study aims to clarify the scientific definition of comfort food by examining how the concept has been understood and in which contexts it is used, identifying the predominant methodological designs in research on the topic, and analysing the factors associated with the consumption of these foods, based on a systematic mapping of available scientific documents. Development of the protocol was guided by the PCC acronym (Population, Concept, Context) and was registered on the Open Science Framework (OSF). It was then developed and published in a specialised journal. Following the protocol phase, the scoping review was conducted. Analysing the elements that comprise the concept identified two macro-dimensions: Hedonic (immediate sensory pleasure and reward) and Eudaimonic (construction of meaning, identity and affective regulation), and an integrative concept was proposed for this food category: tasty food with cultural and identity-related significance that is associated with positive memories and is consumed to promote sensory pleasure, emotional connection, affective regulation and well-being. This emphasises the coexistence of these dimensions in the functions attributed to comfort food. The second study was a secondary investigation which used data extracted from the scoping review. The aim was to characterise the identified comfort foods according to their frequency in the literature, the concept dimensions adopted in the studies and the sources of information. The study also aimed to assess the similarities and differences between the repertoires of comfort foods based on the concept dimensions adopted in the studies and the sources of information. Finally, the study aimed to analyse whether the dimensions of comfort food comprising the study’s guiding concept differ according to the information source. The food repertoires of Researchers and the Hedonic dimension were found to be more restricted, while Participants, Reviews, and the Eudaimonic and Hybrid dimensions exhibited greater diversity. Regarding similarity, low overlap and high exclusivity were observed among the groups. Furthermore, significant variation in the dimensions was observed depending on the information source. This thesis establishes a framework for organising knowledge about this food category, filling conceptual gaps and providing a foundation for future research. This study focuses on two main forms of SpA: ankylosing spondylitis (AS) and psoriatic arthritis (PsA), which share clinical and immunopathological manifestations and therapeutic strategies, but also have specific molecular characteristics. Therefore, one main objective was to investigate the dysregulation of molecular pathways and differential gene expression patterns in patients with AS and PsA in order to identify genetic signatures, potential biomarkers, and biological processes that are common and distinct between the two diseases. Based on text mining and functional enrichment screening, 3,660 genes associated with the pathologies were identified, of which 433 were common between AS and PsA, representing a common core of biological relevance for SpA. RNA-Seq data from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) repository were used to perform differential expression analyses, predict protein-protein interactions (PPI networks), and reconstruct regulatory networks between transcription factors (TFs) and their target genes. Data integration allowed the identification of central hubs (PPARG, FOS, STAT1, and STAT3) and master regulators that have been little explored in the literature (FOXF2, MZF1, and MAX::MYC), suggesting their role in disease pathogenesis. Common pathways were identified, such as IL-17 and TNF, already well described in the literature, in addition to lipid metabolism, recently highlighted in studies as a shared axis between the two diseases. Socioeconomic pressures on coastal areas have resulted in rapid urbanization and the degradation of natural resources. On the other hand, the advance of the sea has been destroying and causing irreversible socio-environmental damages to beaches worldwide. However, this has supposedly not occurred in Nísia Floresta, as the city is distant from the sea and its beaches are largely protected by sandbars, although there is urban densification in these areas. The hypothesis of this study is that, due to the protection of the municipal beaches by reefs, there have been no impacts, degradation, or destruction in the coastal zone due to human occupation on the beaches. With the support of geotechnologies, satellite images, and geographic information systems, it was possible to process and analyze the transformation of land use and occupation in the municipality of Nísia Floresta. The results point to disordered human occupation and significant negative environmental impacts throughout the municipal territory. In the analyzed period, it was observed that the urbanized area grew significantly, from 42.56 hectares in 1985 to 1,081.78 hectares in 2022, which resulted in the reduction of natural areas, loss of biodiversity, increased soil impermeabilization, and greater risk of flooding and urban heat islands. Furthermore, the savanna formation decreased from 2,788.38 hectares to 971.14 hectares, leading to effects such as biodiversity loss and alterations in the ecological balance. The beach zone has also suffered negative environmental impacts, such as the destruction of buildings, erosion, and the transport and deposition of sediments on the beaches. In this context, environmental education plays a fundamental role in encouraging sustainable behaviors and attitudes, promoting initiatives such as community gardens and alternative food practices. Among these alternatives, Non-Conventional Food Plants (NCFPs) stand out, defined as plant species with edible parts that are often overlooked, yet hold significant nutritional, agricultural, and environmental potential. The cultivation and consumption of NCFPs contribute to dietary diversification, providing essential vitamins, minerals, and bioactive compounds, while also supporting the prevention of chronic diseases and strengthening food security. Their hardiness and adaptability to different environmental conditions reduce dependence on agricultural inputs such as fertilizers and pesticides, thereby decreasing environmental impacts and enhancing the resilience of farming systems in the face of climate change. Despite their potential, integration of NCFPs faces challenges such as lack of awareness, cultural barriers, absence of specific public policies, and limited scientific research. This study, conducted through a literature review and qualitative approach, seeks to analyze the role of NCFPs at the intersection of sustainability, health, and food security, highlighting their relevance for agrobiodiversity conservation and for the development of more sustainable and resilient food systems. One strategy to mitigate predation risk is vigilance, which involves monitoring the environment and detecting potential threats. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between play and vigilance, examining how characteristics intrinsic to play may be associated with the occurrence of vigilance in common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) in a natural environment. We hypothesised that specific aspects of play are related to the occurrence of vigilance, including: duration, composition of participant subgroups, location, substrate, height, and exposure of participants. Accordingly, we expected greater vigilance in longer play bouts, involving infants and juveniles, in which participants emit vocalisations, occurring in non-usual locations, at elevated heights or on the ground, and with exposed participants. To test our hypotheses, behavioural sampling (focal animal and all-occurrence sampling) was conducted on 22 marmosets, from September 2023 to June 2024 in the Açu National Forest (Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil). Our results indicated greater vigilance in the following situations: during longer play episodes, in the presence of immatures individuals, containing vocalizations, in unusual locations, and at heights closer to the ground. This increase in vigilance may reflect indirect risks associated with play behavior. Our findings highlight the high levels of cognition and prosociality exhibited by marmosets. Non-pharmacological treatments have limited efficacy, mainly due to low adherence and difficulty in continuity. Drug treatments, especially those with synthetic drugs, demonstrate greater efficacy; however, they present several side effects. Melatonin, in turn, demonstrates limited efficacy due to its short duration of action. This study aimed to evaluate, using computational tools, the molecular interaction between melatonin (mainly used in the treatment of sleep disorders), agomelatine (indicated for the treatment of depression), and their analogues with the melatonin receptors MT1 and MT2. To this end, several theoretical levels were used in the calculations: classical mechanics, quantum mechanics, and hybrid mechanics, through various methodologies: molecular docking, molecular dynamics (MD), and energy calculations of protein-ligand interaction. The results demonstrated the remarkable correlation between the methodology employed and the experimental data, resulting in the appropriate arrangement of the molecules' affinity in relation to the receptors. Thus, it was possible to recognize common key residues in the interactions with the molecules, seven in MT1 (Phe179, Met107, Gly108, Val111, Val191, Val159, and Ile112) and six in MT2 (Phe192, Val124, Gly121, Val204, Leu172, and Asn268). Furthermore, new conserved interactions were observed (Gly108/Gly121, Val111/Val124, and Val191/Val204), which suggest the function of these amino acids as essential in the recognition between ligands and receptors. Moreover, the relevance of MD in optimizing experimentally determined structures and in obtaining, through hybrid calculations, the minimum energy configuration for ab initio analysis was highlighted. Thus, through analyses resulting from the study of interactions of structures that were resolved, optimized, or modeled by molecular docking, it became feasible to propose a new ligand: MPI, whose performance proved promising, especially in its interaction with the MT2 receptor. Furthermore, the interaction of a new molecule (GW117), whose main application is as an antidepressant, was examined. However, initial results indicated affinity for melatonin receptors, and it may also act as an agonist for them. When compared to its analogue, agomelatine, the results indicate superior activity at the MT2 receptor and similar efficacy at the MT1 receptor, demonstrating sustained interactions with melatonin analogues. Therefore, there is strong evidence that GW117 performs better than the drug agomelatine in sleep disorders, and may become an important ally in the treatment of depressive cases that coexist with sleep cycle alterations. In this regard, practices such as participatory management, the inclusion of local communities in decision-making processes, the valorization and dissemination of local culture, and the qualification of the indigenous population emerge as strategic guidelines capable of promoting the integration of economic growth, environmental preservation, and social equity. Nevertheless, the expansion of tourism activity has intensified debates and criticisms concerning associated socio-environmental impacts, particularly in insular destinations characterized by environmental fragility, social complexity, and territorial limitations. In this context, the need for continuous monitoring and evaluation becomes evident in order to ensure that tourism development remains aligned with the promotion of equitable benefits for local communities, as well as with the preservation of natural ecosystems. Against this backdrop, the Fernando de Noronha Archipelago—recognized as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site and characterized by high ecological relevance and increasing tourist flows—constitutes the locus of this investigation. The general objective of this doctoral thesis is to analyze residents’ perceptions of the socio-environmental impacts generated by the tourism sector on the island, from an ESG perspective, examining their relationships with quality of life, place attachment, and residents’ support for tourism. To achieve these objectives, the study adopted a bibliographic, exploratory, descriptive, and explanatory research design, with a mixed qualitative and quantitative approach. Initially, a systematic literature review was conducted to support the understanding of the historical evolution of tourism in Fernando de Noronha and the theoretical construct of place attachment. Subsequently, an exploratory quantitative survey was carried out through the application of a data collection instrument to a sample of 200 residents, aimed at assessing perceptions of ESG practices and their effects on quality of life, place attachment, and residents’ support for tourism. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, factor analysis, and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM), employing IBM SPSS and AMOS software (version 22). The results indicate that perceptions of quality of life and environmental impacts are the main determinants of residents’ support for tourism. Place attachment influences support for tourism indirectly, mediated by perceptions of quality of life. Additionally, the findings reveal a lack of more effective public policies aimed at fostering genuine local entrepreneurship and qualifying residents to occupy positions within the tourism sector. Overall, the study highlights that tourism development in Fernando de Noronha requires an integrated approach, sensitive to residents’ perceptions and committed to the principles of sustainable tourism.Doctoral Thesis Ecomobilidade relacional: conexões na ambientalização e humanização do espaço urbano(Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, 2025-11-04) Cunha, José Carlos Santos; Soares, Maria José Nascimento; Cândido, Gesinaldo Ataíde; Melo, José Nilton de; Santos, Núbia Dias dos; Lopes, Sérgio LuizThe conventional model of urban mobility, based on the prioritization of individual motorized transport, reinforces spatial, environmental, and social inequalities, especially in sprawling cities, where access to essential services and natural spaces is hindered, resulting in significant impacts on mobility and its connections with the processes of the relocation of being in nature, environmentalization, and humanization of urban space. In this scenario, urban mobility— traditionally addressed from technical and infrastructural perspectives—proves insufficient to face the challenges of sustainability and socio-environmental and socio-spatial inclusion. Within this context, the concept of relational ecomobility emerges, proposing an articulation between sustainable movements and territorial and human relations in urban daily life, from a perspective that goes beyond the efficiency of transport systems, placing mobility within the scope of socio-spatial relations and environmental justice. The objective of this thesis was to analyze the connections and impacts of relational ecomobility on the relocation of the human being in nature, environmentalization, and humanization of urban space from spatial, environmental, and social dimensions. The spatial scope of the research focused on the urban space of the city of Nossa Senhora do Socorro, Sergipe, Brazil—specifically three neighborhoods shaped by the urbanization/metropolization process of the Metropolitan Region of Aracaju. Data were obtained through the following procedures: technical reading, involving the selection of landscape elements that characterize the spatial, environmental, and social dimensions, delimited on neighborhood maps in buffers, with their connections analyzed using measurable indicators and variables proportional to the scales defined by Machado (2019). Collection points were defined via Google Maps and validated in the field, and the results represented the magnitude attribute of each analyzed action. A participatory reading was also conducted through questionnaires to capture the perception of agents who shape urban space, using a five-point Likert scale ranging from extremely negative to highly positive, with a neutral central class. This method allowed qualitative responses to be converted into measurable quantitative data through the calculation of the Mean Ranking (MR) of response scores, corresponding to the importance attribute. Cross-referencing of quantitative indicator data was performed using a Connection and Impact Index Matrix Model of Relational Ecomobility (adapted from the Leopold Matrix, 1971), which generated magnitude, connection, and importance indices that defined the impact levels of relational ecomobility on the relocation of being in nature, environmentalization, and humanization of urban space. The analysis of the impact indices per dimension of relational ecomobility in the studied neighborhoods revealed significant disparities among urban territories regarding the human connection with nature, the environmentalization and humanization of spaces, and the promotion of a fairer and more accessible city. The spatial, environmental, and social dimensions are closely related to the notion of socio-environmental and socio-spatial justice, which presupposes equitable access to urban infrastructure, sustainable mobility, and quality of life for all social groups. Therefore, relational ecomobility emerges as a critical key to overcoming the dichotomies imposed by urban modernity—nature/city, subject/territory, mobility/fixity—and as an emancipatory proposal capable of promoting transformations in the ways of inhabiting, moving, and coexisting in cities. As a socioemotional skill, its development requires exposure to environments that facilitate its expression and practice. Accurately adopting another person’s standpoint, recognizing one’s own emotions, and perceiving them in others involves the interplay of individual and contextual variables. The aim of this study was to examine how gender, socioeconomic status, and age group influence empathy, assessed through Fantasy, Personal Distress, Empathic Concern, and Perspective Taking subscales. Additionally, we sought to determine whether individuals with higher empathy scores are in fact more accurate in identifying emotions through facial expressions, as suggested in the literature, and to develop a predictive model to identify which individual variables best explain empathy levels. To investigate the expression of empathy across different age groups, we employed self-report measures and a behavioral task administered with an eye-tracker (a device that monitors gaze patterns) which allowed us to assess how effectiveness in emotion recognition contributes to empathic processes. Finally, we conducted an intercultural study to evaluate whether individuals from different nationalities exhibit distinct levels of empathy. However, it is still unclear whether the psychedelic effects are related to physiological changes in pathways associated with depression. The present study investigated the relationships between DMT use and a panel of potential blood biomarkers of depression/mood in a group of healthy individuals, seeking to understand whether molecular changes are associated with the intensity and nature of DMT-induced altered states of consciousness. This is a cross-sectional, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study. All participants received one dose of the active substance and one dose of placebo in random order within a controlled environment. Blood samples were collected before and after the use of each substance, and the Hallucinogen Rating Scale (HRS) and Mystical Experience Questionnaire (MEQ) were applied to assess altered states of consciousness. The molecules investigated were C-reactive protein (CRP), cortisol, and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA). Although no significant changes in CRP levels were observed, reductions in this marker correlate with higher scores on the cognitive dimension in one of the subjective assessment scales (HRS). DMT induced acute increases in cortisol and the cortisol/DHEA(S) ratio without significantly altering DHEA(S), and increases in cortisol and the cortisol/DHEA(S) ratio were positively associated with specific cognitive and mystical aspects of the psychedelic experience (HRS and MEQ). An important finding was that the increase in cortisol occurred only when DMT was administered in the first session. A lower initial dose (placebo) reduces anticipatory anxiety and may facilitate the patient's adaptation to psychedelic-assisted therapy. Therefore, this study suggests that DMT does not act only at the subjective level, but has effects that integrate experiential and biological dimensions, in which the intensity and qualitative aspects of the psychedelic experience are associated with acute hormonal responses and inflammatory markers. Considering the scarcity of studies in this area, these results contribute to the advancement of this emerging field and to a broader understanding of the potential mechanisms of DMT, in order to provide support for the development of interventions that integrate subjective and physiological aspects as part of the therapeutic process.
