This thesis analyzes the political actions of the main indigenous people of the Vila de Extremoz do Norte, Captaincy of Rio Grande do Norte, between 1760 and 1858, investigating how the processes of territorialization were constituted between these two centuries. This space of political representation was created from the founding of the village, with the institution of the Senate of the Chamber, on May 3, 1760, in the context of the implementation of the Directory of Indians in the Captaincies of the North of the State of Brazil. The village was built on the site where the Guajiru Mission had previously stood, a missionary space where, from the mid-17th century onwards, native populations of diverse ethnic origins were reterritorialized, that is, subjected to a new territorialization coordinated by the administration of the Catholic Church and the Portuguese Crown. One of the main objectives for the establishment of the Directory of Indians (1757) was the transformation of indigenous people into vassals of the Portuguese monarchy. This time frame was established by the Directory's experience in this space until the period of "erasure" of indigenous peoples promoted in the speeches and movements of national and provincial authorities, which culminated in the transfer of the headquarters of the former indigenous village to Ceará-Mirim in 1858. To this end, returning to the Directory, mechanisms were created for indigenous people to participate in public life in their villages, whether by occupying positions in the chambers, receiving military ranks and, finally, "helping" the colonists with their exploited labor in various activities. Among the exponents of this action, stood out the chief captain of the Indians, Hipólito da Cunha da Assunção, who, due to his diligence in the various spheres of temporal power in that village, as councilor, ordinary judge and director of the Indians, was an important political leadership among the indigenous population in Extremoz, mainly in disputes related to land tenure and compulsory labor. In this context, the “Facção dos Índios de Extremoz” was organized, being an expression of the political and military strength of those indigenous individuals, in the face of opposition from local potentates and entitled the “Facção dos Teixeira da Silva”. To undertake this investigation, we analyzed a set of administrative sources (letters, requests, royal orders, official documents, etc.), parish sources (baptisms, marriages, deaths), cartographic sources, newspaper sources, and press sources. With the crossing of sources that we used, through the onomastic method, it was possible to identify that Hipólito da Cunha and other indigenous officials, such as Antônio Dinis Pereira and Ignácio Duarte, filed a complaint with the desembargador of the Judicial District of Paraíba against the “main” residents of Vila de Extremoz in relation to the irregular possession of land belonging to indigenous residents. Finally, the position taken by these characters demonstrates an indigenous protagonism in the captaincy analyzed mainly at the beginning of the 19th century, and this was configured, in the use of spaces of power, whether municipal or military, for the defense of the collective of the original peoples territorialized in this place.

"Não é terra de préstimo e nunca foi povoada": a territorialização dos sertões do Cabo de São Roque

This research investigates the process of territorial appropriation, carried out by the Portuguese Crown, on the north coast of the Rio Grande Captaincy, between 1500 and 1719. In order to do it, we question the occupation of this space, since the historiography production on Rio Grande Captaincy has shown a huge gap about this coastal region, as if that space was an invisible part of the territory. This research appropriates Antonio Robert de Moraes's concept of “territory”, in which the colonization process used military services and all juridical-administrative structure to expand colonial lands. Methodologically, it uses an analysis of the cartographic and written documents of the period and also investigates, through the analysis of the subjects' trajectory, guided by the studies of João Fragoso and Cristina Mazzeo Vivó, the life trajectories of the sesmeiros who acquired land in the sertões of Porto do Touro. This analysis has identified some evidence of contact between Potiguara natives and French privateers in Pititinga Cove and near Cabo de São Roque in the 16th century, it has also identified the sesmeiro Domingos de Carvalho da Silva as one of the important figures in this process of appropriation of the hinterlands of Cabo de São Roque. In conclusion, the examination of these sources has shown that the crossing of different archival sources, especially cartographic, brings rewarding results to the work of the historian interested in investigating the occupation of colonial spaces and the relations between the different levels of Portuguese administration overseas.
