    (Re)estruturação urbana em Teresina-PI
(Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, 2025-04-10) Araújo, Francisco Jean da Silva; Gomes, Rita de Cássia da Conceição; http://lattes.cnpq.br/3188665123953039; http://lattes.cnpq.br/2305548505315077; Freitas, Paulo Rogério de; Façanha, Antonio Cardoso; Fonseca, Maria Aparecida Pontes da; Holanda, Virginia Célia Cavalcante de
The location pattern of commercial and service facilities has assumed an increasingly important role in the intraurban restructuring process of cities, especially those of large and medium size, as the decentralization of tertiary activities to other urban areas reorients flows and redefines urban centrality. In Teresina-PI, this displacement of commercial and service facilities to the Eastern Zone has triggered significant spatial changes, one of which was the restructuring of certain avenues, transforming them into important commercial and service corridors (CSCs) that represent new expressions of urban centrality.Based on this framework, the general objective of this research is to understand the urban restructuring process in Teresina and the formation of new expressions of centrality based on the new location pattern of tertiary activities in the Eastern Zone of the city. Thus, the theoretical and methodological foundation of the study is grounded in dialectics, as urban space in cities is a product of society and, therefore, a result of complex and contradictory processes. In line with the proposed objectives, the methodological procedures adopted were bibliographic research, documentary research, and field research; the latter was structured around three data collection instruments: interviews, questionnaires, and systematic observation. The spatial scope encompasses the main commercial and service corridors in the Eastern Zone of the city, which include the following avenues: Nossa Senhora de Fátima, Raul Lopes, Jóquei Clube, Homero Castelo Branco, Dom Severino, João XXIII, and Presidente Kennedy.Based on empirical analyses, it was found that tertiary activities occupy, on average, 70% of the buildings along these avenues, with a predominance of commercial facilities over service providers. The sole exception was Av. Nossa Senhora de Fátima, where the use for commercial and service purposes reached 90%, making this corridor the most saturated by commerce and, consequently, the one with the least potential for growth in this activity. It was also observed that the functions hosted by commercial and service forms are quite dynamic, revealing the absence of specialized corridors, although the corridor along Av. João XXIII has shown a tendency toward specialization. The forms assumed by commercial and service facilities within their respective corridors exhibit some similarities, but also differ, mainly regarding the size of the structures.Through this delineation, it was possible to determine that the new location pattern of commercial and service activities in the Eastern Zone of the city is mainly the result of the diseconomies observed in the city's central area, the "main center," compared to the advantages offered by the aforementioned zone, which emerged in this dialectical interface as a new spatial configuration. In this context, the expansion of modern retail, the spread of automobile use, and the increasing importance attributed to leisure and consumption collectively contributed to the restructuring of these avenues, transforming them into Commercial and Service Corridors (CSCs) that, in turn, represent new expressions of urban centrality, as they are spaces characterized by an intense daily flow of people.

This paper deals with the nature of urban centrality in Natal. It presents as a thesis assumption that the nature of urban centrality is diverse in its contents, processes and forms, since it is the urban space permeated by equal diversity. It aims to explain the nature of urban centrality in Natal, considering the contents, processes and forms that constitute it, as well as the factors competing for its diversification. In order to reach the established goal, Henri Lefebvre's theory of Space Production seeks to understand the processes that have been unfolding in the urban context of Natal, from the 1980s to the present, from a dialectical perspective. It is as an aid to the reading of reality, it is based on important theoretical contributions concerning the theme of urban centrality, urban space and tertiary economy; it’s not neglecting the academic production on the subject, and on the City of Natal, from examining documents that also deal with the history of the city, official files with public agencies, databases, field research, interviews with public managers and leaders of organized civil society organizations. As a result of the investigative process, he explains that the nature of urban centrality in Natal is diverse and multicentric. Diverse, for having been revealed several dimensions of centrality, according to the nature of its contents: historical, cultural, symbolic, ideological and economic; It’s being the economic dimension of urban centrality prominent in urban space, and being permeated with the others, given that the city is a place of exchanges, in which the economic one becomes prominent, and presides over the production of the urban space. Multicentric, by the various urban centers that have been conforming since the formation of the nucleus of the historical center of Natal to the present, with the new centralities, resulting from the process of expansion of the modern tertiary in the city.

It analyzes the production of the space of the North Zone of Natal/RN, of the beginning of its formation - decade of 1970 - a present time, under the optics of the urban planning and of the administration of the territory. Inside of that path, it examines the interests that orientated the "creation" of the referred space, as support to the process of urban planning and of administration of the territory; as well as the recent processes that evidence a new partner-space dynamics, which is configured, now as an incipient insert of the North Zone to the context natalense urban-space, now as a "reedition" of its report process of partner-space segregation. It stands out that, while in the beginning of the formation of the North Zone, the State was made the main actor, making possible the expansion of the capital in the north sense of the city of Natal, through the implantation of the Industrial District of Natal (DIN) and of the expansion of the habitational politics of the House of Financial System (SFH); at the present time, the new space processes are configured through the economical inclination, through expansion of the tertiary section in the city of Natal. It is based in bibliography regarding the theme in focus, in primary and secondary sources, as well as in processes and forms that were unchained in the North Zone along the research. It analyzes the North Zone then in its group, the one that makes possible apprehend the inherent conflicts to the process of production-appropriation of the urban space, for the several social actors - the State, the capital and the society - that dispute the control of the production of the space according themselves their interests

The present work is about the reproduction of the urban area of Nova Cruz RN, with the objective of analyzing the social and spatial implications of the relocation of the main street market in the city from 1991 on. Nowadays, the city of Nova Cruz takes over importance in the potiguar social and spatial scenario due to its condition of central city which is practiced for decades in Potiguar Agreste Microregion. Beginning with its formation process connected with traveler‟s hostel which assisted the activity of cattle transportation, further in time by the golden era of cotton production in its territory, it was noticed that its importance in relation with the nearby towns has been happening differently throughout time. From the year 1991 on, the town of Nova Cruz has gone through a territory restructuring of its urban area due to the relocation of the open market from Downtown neighborhood to São Sebastião neighborhood. Such territorial movement resulted in a reformation of the town‟s urban space, promoting in both neighborhoods urban growth and the expansion of commercial activity associated with the migration of the commercial center of the city. The transference of the commercial area has caused these processes through the new uses of the land towards the São Sebastião region, it has also caused a decrease in market value of the downtown area as a result of the breakdown of previous existing business activities, their service contribution and the citizen migration, establishing a space and socioeconomic portrait in the neighborhood. From this context, our analysis seeks to understand the social and spatial impacts occurred in Downtown neighborhood, the way in which the production and reproduction of the urban space in São Sebastião neighborhood and the implications resulted from the actions of the administrative power in restructuring of the urban space of Nova Cruz. In order to do so, a bibliographical research was used to compose our theoretic-conceptual mark, discussing the matter with authors such as Roberto Lobato Corrêa, Ana Fani, Milton Santos, Manuel Castells e Heri Lefvbre, among others, discussing on the subject of urban analysis, the concepts of urban space and the process of reproduction of the urban space. A field research was utilized in our area of study by means of primary data gathering through interviews, questionnaire and photographic register. Secondary data gathering was also obtained by means of bibliographical and documental research related to our study object. By these means, it was sought to contribute to the understanding of the urban space through its production and reproduction based upon the discovery of social and spatial practices

Cidades pequenas, grandes problemas :perfil urbano do Agreste Potiguar
(Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, 2005-04-15) Gonçalves, Francisco Ednardo; Costa, Ademir Araújo da; ; http://buscatextual.cnpq.br/buscatextual/visualizacv.do?id=K4761190Y0; ; Pontes, Beatriz Maria Soares; ; http://buscatextual.cnpq.br/buscatextual/visualizacv.do?id=K4787705J5; Maia, Doralice Sátyro; ; http://buscatextual.cnpq.br/buscatextual/visualizacv.do?id=K4700360U6
In view of the diversity and the heterogeneity of the existing cities in Brazil, our approach refers to the urban and non-metropolitan areas. Aiming to foment the studies on small cities e to apprehend the sociospatial configuration of the urban environment in such cities, this piece of work elaborates and analyzes the urban profile of the small cities of the Agreste Potiguar region, using as a theoretical reference landmark the production of the urban and regional space, from the decade of 1970 to 2000. Starting from this reference, this piece of work presents an urban sociospatial characterization of the small cities of the Agreste Potiguar region, with emphasis on the economic framework, on the population dynamics, on the main social data, culminating in the main characteristics of the local daily life. The study of the small cities of the Agreste Potiguar region makes it possible the comprehension of the problems that involve the cities of this size, above all, those inserted in economically fragile regions. In the analyzed period, the changes occurred in the productive structure of the State of Rio Grande do Norte triggered a great crisis in the economy of the Agreste Potiguar region. This aspect, allied to the insufficient performance of the public power, contributed to the sprouting of some sociospatial problems, amongst which may be distinguished: the economic fragility, the generalized unemployment, the lack of security and the urban infrastructure absence sufficient to take care of the social demand. Even facing the existing problems, the small cities must be seen as potential spaces, capable to promote the regional development. To do so, it is necessary a process of democratization of the public administration, an ample popular participation and the establishment of a new urban policy, that aims at the social promotion of the individuals, the guarantee of basic necessities and the access to the necessary services to a dignified life

By the end of the 21st Century, economy globalization trends to show a velocity process through which market being expanded characterized by an intense going on of the internationalization of finance, after that marginalizing the periphery of the social spaces. It is clear to see that this process occurred in those less developed countries happens in an accentuated way just because income distribution that is so regressive and also because the insufficient enclosing of the social programs, we find this situation in a big part of Brazilian cities. The marginalizing social economical process observed in Natal, a city located in the east coast part of Northeast region in Brazil and that owns a population upper to 778 thousand in habitants is nearly linked to the extension of goods and services commerce. The installation of new urban activities in the city pointed out tourist activity as the greater impulsive thing in the phenomenon promotion, most of them aiming to promote Natal to the national and international scenery. It privilege strongly in the South zone with economical implementations such as shopping s centers, supermarkets, and home buildings condominiums leading to a loss of functionality of some traditional district located in central areas of the city. Notwithstanding, some spaces, for instance Alecrim district officially created in 1911, has notably resisted to the expansion of the urban process pointed out in Natal in the last years. So that this put Alecrim District as a district with originally characteristics reaffirmed along the historical process form old times. The predominance of some residential characteristics such as the incidence of some villages and a concentration of a big and confuse popular commerce distributed along streets puts Alecrim District as a resistant space in Natal. The same way analyze Alecrim District under the prism of Historic Geography because we understand this way it accomplishes a fundamental role in the theoretical methodological development of our work, just when we analyze the time as a variant in our object of study. It is still inside this theoretical field that we carry out a brief reviewing about quarter/district definition, under the optic from several registered and scientific resources taken into account along this work, because we understand that it was necessary to think this important spatial unit especially to know exactly what we are referring to as a district and so we can reaffirm Alecrim as an important and traditional district to Natal and it has been resisting to spatial transformation verified in the last years in Natal city. To give support to our reflection we used methodological tools related to inhabitants lifestyles knowledge and also the study of Alecrim District as a space that promote a certain centrality in Natal as some indicators to keep original characteristics in the district in Natal

This study aims at analysing the (re) prodction of urban space in the south sone of Natal city, in particular the influence of the shopping-centers in this process. In this respect, it also analyses the changes of habits and constumes for part of the society, when those entreprizes were built in better-off areas of the south zone Natal as well as the transformations in the surroundings of the thre main shopping-centers. A sother commercial establishments of the same size, two out of the three main shopping-centers in the city are targered towards the better-off population. However, if compared to the others, one these has, for some time, sought to target a lower in come population. In spite of being an important element in the (re)production of urban space as well as in the cities modern commercial sector, these large commercial entreprizes reinforce capitalisms contradctions in so far as they constitute semi-public space whit an exclusionary and segregatory vatune
