This work analyzes the thematic and aesthetic diversity of Pernambuco’s cinema that emerged from the 1990s onwards, focusing on the films Baile Perfumado (1996), Árido Movie (2005) and Acqua Movie (2019), directed by Lírio Ferreira. From the geographic perspective, the study investigates how narratives reframe the semi-arid region, exploring its symbolic, affective, and temporal dimensions through specific paths. These paths are referred to as escape routes, where the study reveals how the films offer multifaceted visions of the semiarid, addressing cultural, historical, and environmental issues. By connecting Cinema and Geography, the research challenges stereotypes, proposing the semi-arid as a complex narrative space, where metathemes present routes that expand interpretations and renew the imaginary of the region. The study explores aspects such as the construction of discourse and the cinematic semi-arid landscape, the challenge to traditional conceptions, and the contribution of visual narratives to a deeper geographical understanding of Brazil’s Northeast. For this purpose, the theoretical foundation employs various concepts and categories to examine cinema as a geographic device. Authors like Deleuze (2007) and Aumont (1994) discuss paradigms of films as means for constructing socio-spatial narratives and representations of reality. Cinema is also seen as a tool for understanding geographies (Claval, 2001; Costa, 2011; Gomes & Ribeiro, 2013) and as a relational space reflecting socio-spatial dynamic (Harvey, 2004, 2015). Landscape is analyzed as a cultural representation (Cosgrove, 1998), linked to social practices and subjective perceptions (Berque, 1998; Barbosa, 1999). In Brazil, cinema represents a form of resistance and cultural reinterpretation, especially in the Northeast and the semi-arid (Albuquerque Jr., 1999). Methodologically, representations are investigated through film analysis, where the films are initially deconstructed by describing the shots, sequences, frames, scenes, angles, sounds, and compositions. Subsequently, they are reconstructed based on an understanding of the deconstructed elements, integrating them into an approach that considers the interaction between cinematic and geographic spaces, examining landscapes, locations, narrative structures, discourses, and camera movements. As a result, we observe that the filmmaker transforms the northeastern semi-arid into a dynamic and vibrant universe of possibilities, subverting traditional images of poverty and desolation. His films reveal a constantly transforming landscape, where escape routes from aridity, with their harshness and fissures, function as mirrors of the lives and emotions intertwined within. Through visual poetics, Ferreira configures the landscape as a reflection of human experiences, inviting the audience to rethink the semi-arid not as a place of scarcity but as a territory of potential. The cinematic narratives indicate that the aridity of the semi-arid region emerges as a creative field and a dynamic narrative space. Throughout the journeys of characters like Benjamin Abrahão, Jonas, Cícero, and Duda, the semi-arid does not dissolve but reinvents itself, maintaining its identity while embodying an ambiguity between ruptures and continuities. The semi-arid, deeply connected to its historical roots, has emerged as a fertile space where aridity enhances resilience and transformative capacity, highlighting fundamental dynamics for the uniqueness of the region and its inhabitants.

This thesis seeks to think, from the fields of cinema and geography, on the landscape as a spatiotemporal experience. The landscape experience emerges from the encounter of the body and its senses with the world, producing affections, poetic images and spatial imaginations that bring with them political implications related to the way we see the world. To think about spatial experiences and the way they produce a landscape becoming, we mobilize cinema which, according to Deleuze (2018) creates a direct presentation of time, and produces a new image paradigm, the time-image. The image ceases to be sensorimotor, which was prolonged in the action and becomes opticalsound, that is, it makes time and thought sensitive, makes them visible and sound (DELEUZE, 2018, p.35). Something similar occurs to the landscape that figures here as an experience of time brought about by certain spatialities. Cinema thus contributes to thinking about Geography and its concepts, and is no longer just a collection of representations of places. The cinema currently produced in Pernambuco offers us the possibility of thinking about these experiences, as it builds, in many moments, different encounters between subjects and the world. It presents clairvoyant characters who face the landscape and the affections that are produced by these encounters or connections. Pernambuco's contemporary cinema builds different spatialities: urban, agrarian and natural spaces, and characters who are, in turn, affected by these spaces. In the landscape as becoming or experience of time, these spaces and their respective problems provoke affects that can be negative or positive, experiences of freedom, authoritarianism, security, fear, beauty, ugliness, place, non-place, among others. In addition, Pernambuco's cinema updates poetic images and spatial imaginations of the Brazilian Northeast, constructs a landscape policy that thematizes the city of Recife and its problems, as well as other spaces; it breaks and, at the same time, reproduces regionalism as a spatial imaginary and, above all, as an authorial and conceptual cinema, makes us reflect on the concept of landscape and the way in which geographic space is imagined and reimagined.

(Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, 2024-02-02) Soares, Larícia Gomes; Farias, Juliana Felipe; http://lattes.cnpq.br/3431876696268959; https://orcid.org/0000-0001-8731-8780; http://lattes.cnpq.br/3746719015783117; Nogueira, Sheila Kelly Paulino; Troleis, Adriano Lima; http://lattes.cnpq.br/8830982074139789; Costa, Natane Oliveira da
Baía Formosa, a municipality located in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, presents socioenvironmental issues and conflicts related to its natural resources utilization. The diverse use of different parts of the territory by various stakeholders, especially over the last decade, underscores changes, impacts, and conflicts in this region. Given this context, this research aims to develop participatory mapping of the municipality, highlighting its potentialities, as well as issues and limitations, through an examination of the landscape and the varied utilization of the natural resources within the territory. To this end, we focus on three key groups: representatives from the urban center, the Pituba district, and the Vila da Usina district; the Sagi Jacu indigenous community; and the fishing community. The theoretical-methodological foundation of our research draws from Geoecology of Landscapes and Social Cartography. We incorporate contributions from authors such as Farias (2012, 2015), Rodriguez and Silva (2018), Acselrad and Coli (2008), Gorayeb, Meireles, and Silva (2015), Costa (2016, 2021), among others. Methodologically, our study follows four phases inherent to Landscape Geoecology, which have been adapted for our research: organization and inventory, analysis, diagnosis, and propositional phases. These phases align with the triad of Social Cartography ー namely, investigation, action, and participation. As a result, we have carried out a social participatory mapping exercise encompassing the urban center of the municipality, as well as the Pituba district, the Sagi district, the Vila da Usina district, and the Sagi Jacu village. The primary focus of this exercise is to identify the potentialities and issues within these localities, alongside the collaborative formulation of mitigation proposals and recommendations for more sustainable utilization of natural resources. Furthermore, we have produced a social fishing map, emphasizing this traditional activity that holds significant historical importance for this municipality. In this way, the participatory mapping of Baía Formosa does not present itself merely as a technical tool, but rather as a process that fosters the connection between the community and its territory, as well as the scientific and traditional knowledge. Therefore, it is expected that the analyses and outcomes resulting from the research will be able to assist the municipality in understanding and investing in its potentialities while respecting its limitations, mitigating problems and conflicts, with the aim of achieving a more harmonious and compatible relationship between human activities and the local environment's carrying capacity.

(Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, 2023-08-25) Parente, Ester Brito; Silva, Anelino Francisco da; http://lattes.cnpq.br/1121335958524063; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-0849-3159; http://lattes.cnpq.br/2363437671873648; Dantas, Eugênia Maria; http://lattes.cnpq.br/6296149707446296; Dantas, Geovany Pachelly Galdino

(Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, 2022-08-26) Costa, Pablo Raniere Medeiros da; Dozena, Alessandro; https://orcid.org/0000-0001-9910-5715; http://lattes.cnpq.br/1811716812760920; http://lattes.cnpq.br/5185196614761972; Dantas, Eugênia Maria; http://lattes.cnpq.br/6296149707446296; Fernandez, Pablo Sebastian Moreira; Queiroz do Ó Filho, Antônio Carlos; Cazetta, Valéria
From an open approach to space, we take urban interventions as a conducting element of a landscape experience in the city of Natal. Constituted by the itinerant movement of the body in encounter with the world, with space, the landscape is understood here as becoming, that is, always making itself. The present thesis sought to present the Natal landscape resulting from our movement of crossing and being crossed daily by the body of the city of Natal and its urban interventions, such as lambe-lambes, pixação and graffiti. Found in different moments and spatial contexts, they mobilized different points of view, experiences and affections for the city. The diversity of interventions that is distinguished in the landscape produces sensations, affects, positive or negative, a landscape experience that can refer to order, freedom, beauty, excess, repetition, the extraordinary. Thus, as an expression of multiplicity, urban interventions constitute different spatialities, mobilizing different points of view and perspectives in the public space of the city. In the path traced to achieve the objectives of the thesis, we consider the assemblages that take place in the spaces of coexistence and visibility of the city, the way in which they are constantly territorialized, deterritorialized and reterritorialized. We seek, this time, to guide our thinking beyond the binomial materiality/immateriality, subject/object, society/nature. There is no separation between them, but a body of multiplicities. In this way, we took the testimonies of the interveners as a source of investigation in which it was possible, from subjectivity and personality, to consider the existence of a collectivity that is established among those who transgress the landscape. Thinking about urban intervention from the agencies that carry it out, implied considering the combination of bodies, whose associations, in addition to distinct expressions in the landscape, correspond to the continuous process of territorialization/deterritorialization/reterritorialization. The urban interventions that appear in the landscape are both predictable, countable, like the lines of segmentarity, and unpredictable, corresponding to rupture, and creating the new, such as the lines of flight.

The Geography is a science with unique characteristics. Being in a privileged position, but, at the same time, difficult to define, geographical science is placed between the human and natural sciences. But it is also part of the dual role of basic and applied sciences. And this crossroads is caused, mainly, by the recent systematization, carried out in Germanic lands a little over two centuries ago. As a result of this phenomenon, the Geography has its main concepts coming from other sciences and still resignified in current times. But the Geosystem, created almost 60 years ago by the Soviet scientist Viktor Sochava, is the closest thing to an entirery geographic theoretical entity. And, despite being contained in Geography, the Geosystem, for different reasons, was misunderstood, especially in Western Geography. Understood, initially, as a theoretical core and, later, as a concept, the Geosystem ended up losing its greatest capacity, which is analytical in the form of a category. And this, despite seeming obvious, has not yet been systematized, so that the understandings of the Geosystem as a concept and a taxon are preponderant in current Geography, even if both have logical-philosophical imperfections. Thus, this thesis, of an eminently theoretical and epistemological character, seeks to establish the Geosystem in a place of its own, going through a philosophical review of its initial bases, as well as by part of the literature consecrated in the French and Soviet schools in Geography, also exemplifying, in Brazilian Geography and his famous Landscape Unit Studies Thus, this thesis study leads geosystemic thinking to an unprecedented theoretical advance, in which the Geosystem is finally consolidated as a category of analysis, placing it in a deserved place, without greater prominence or lesser importance.

The current stage of the development of global society implies significant transformations in local landscapes. The introduction of new rationales in the structure and functioning of landscapes has, as a result, the emergence of serious damages in all spheres of the landscape system. In front of this scenario, Landscape Geoecology, observing the different stages of occupation and intense transformation of the systems, has contributed greatly to the analysis of the optimization, recovery, and preservation processes of different systems. The Rio do Carmo Hydrographic Basin (RCHB), located in the hinterland portion of the state of Rio Grande do Norte, has a variety of landscape units and economic activities, which significantly affect the environmental status of the basin. From this, using Geoecology as a theoretical-methodological guide, this research aims to analyze the environmental status and degrees of sustainability of the RCHB. For this, in order to obtain better results, the RCHB was compartmentalized, based on the relief taxon, into 6 geoecological units, namely: (I) Sertaneja Depression do Carmo, (II) Mountains and Inselbergs, (III) Serra do Mel Plateau, (IV) Interiors Tabuleiros, (V) Marine Fluvial Plain, and (VI) Fluvial Plain. For the interpretation of the environmental status, the analyzes were carried out on a regional and local scale, which made it possible to delineate relationships between existing actions and impacts, based on the parameters established by Conesa (2010). As main results, we highlight the presence of an evolutionary framework with environmental damage in the Fluvial and Marine Fluvial Plain and in the Interiors Tabuleiros, with the main impact promoters being the mineral sector, the salt industry, and agriculture. Based on the results, it is expected that the framework presented in this study can be used by municipal managers to propose sustainable actions in the basin, in order to improve its environmental status.

The approach of geocology as the study of the set of interrelated elements between the association of living creatures and their environmental conditions, acting in a specific part of the landscape, or even in a natural division of space, with different spatial dimensions, presents its solid foundations and much discussed in geographic science. Therefore, the understanding of the landscape from different methodological procedures becomes valid for the systemic interpretation of environmental aspects. Within the scope of research in the Caatinga, the geoecological approach has been widely applied to understand the landscape from the relationship between man and nature, focusing on the change of the environment through anthropic action, corroborating the process of fragmentation and loss of ecological functions. These human pressures increase the speed of the forest fragmentation process, which triggers a sequence of imbalances along the environmental system, causing declines in quality of the provision of Ecosystem Services (ES). In this sense, this research has the general objective of analyzing the landscape from the application of different methodological approaches in the buffer zone of the ESEC-Seridó. For this purpose, satellite images from the years 1988, 1998, 2008 and 2019 were used to understand the temporal dynamics of vegetation cover, where 04 classes of vegetation cover were obtained: exposed soil, sparse vegetation, open vegetation and dense/riparian vegetation. It was observed that the most representative class was open vegetation, presenting about 43% for the years 1988, 1998 and 2008, with sparse Caatinga being the most expressive in 2019 (29%). Subsequently, the degree of fragmentation of forest remnants was evaluated from the landscape metrics in three categories: area, shape and edge. A total of 394 forest fragments were identified, of which 25% have values below 5 hectares and tend to present greater characteristics of unstable environments. Then, the ability of the study area to provide ecosystem services of erosion control was evaluated through the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) and carbon sequestration through the improved photochemical reflectance index. It was identified that about 64% of the study area has a high relevant capacity for erosion control, with areas that do not have any relevant capacity representing around 6% of the total area. The carbon stock, on the other hand, has a relevant capacity of 38%, being the one with the highest value of the other. It is concluded that the combination of different methodological procedures for a landscape reading become effective, enhancing territorial planning and ordering in semiarid landscapes.

The coastal environment has been an object of study over the years due to its dynamic and sensibility to environmental variations, and because it has high ecological, social, economic, and cultural relevance. From the second half of the twentieth century, the spatial fragment legally constituted as the Coastal Zone has been reconfigured in its socio-environmental aspects and in its landscape. Considering these aspects, this work aims to comprehend the evolutive process of the last seven decades of use and occupation of the Coastal Landscape in the districts of Boa Viagem, Pina, and Brasília Teimosa, and develop an hodós-metá for Geography based on Anthropophagic Cartography of Landscapes, collaborating with the understanding of G-TP System. For this purpose, we adopted two methodological approaches. The first one is described as metá-hodós, as we conducted the acquisition stages of orthophoto mosaics granted by the City Hall of Recife, PE (1950, 1970, 1980, and 1990) and satellite images cataloged by the INPE and EarthExplore - USGS (2006-2017). We also classified Urban Landscapes Morphology Typologies, validated images with TerraView with the GeoDMA plug-in, and field data. The second stage is described as Hodós-Metá, and we made use of Geophotography to carry out the visual captures and the application that was proposed in this work, titled as Anthropophagic Cartography of Landscapes, with the purpose to understand the subjectivity of human beings in the field and their relationship with nature, in order to provide an understanding of the human-nature relationship. As a result, we identified that the evolution of the historical formation of both Boa Viagem and Pina districts took place in different ways, interconnected by the relation with the increase of the land value over the years. Boa Viagem is known as the place where the wealthiest people reside, which is valued by the subnormal condition of the “mocambos'' in flooded areas, found in the Pina district in the first decades of the twentieth century, which devalued it for many years, and made most improvements and investments go to the district of Boa Viagem. Brasília Teimosa district is formed from a landfill known at the time as Areial Novo, a piece of land that was intended for improvement works at the Port of Recife, recognized in the 1950s by President Juscelino Kubitschek and, therefore, called by its current name, and decades later it became a Special Social Interest Zone - ZEIS, by the Law 16176/1996. With the help of supervised classifications, we identified that the total area of the three districts, Boa Viagem, Pina, and Brasília Teimosa, corresponds to 1,520 ha, and between 1950-2010 the building area had an increase of 568% (780 ha of total area), the vegetated area reduced -56% (391.77 ha of the total area), the vegetated area with buildings reduced -55% (86.96 ha of the total area), the beach area reduced -67% (41.78 ha of the total area ), rivers and canals reduced -58% (180.59 ha of the total area), and the shrimp farming area had an increase of 153% (42.28 ha of the total area). From the hodós-metá developed, we carried out an ethnic cartographic experiment using the Anthropophagic Cartography of Landscapes in the Ilha de Deus, where we submerged into an affective field and a two-way street in the construction of trust bonds, from which we registered and captured the main movements of individuals in their territory. Therefore, we can understand how humans interact among the main elements of the landscape in a symbiosis process between these people and nature. Finally, we concluded that the analyzed districts underwent several processes of urban landscape reconfiguration, which modified the forms and structures that were present in the landscape. And with the use of Anthropophagic Cartography of Landscapes and Geophotography, we discovered, in a horizontal view, the relationships built by human beings with nature and place.

The potiguar coast has several environmental systems, such as dunes, beaches, rivers, estuaries, lagoons, and cliffs that integrate the coastal area of the state of Rio Grande do Norte (RN). The sea cliffs are important indicators of the environmental changes that occurred in the Quaternary period, and, because they are unique natural monuments, they were selected as the object of study of this thesis, which its general objective is to perform the typological classification of coastal cliffs in Rio Grande do Norte. The justification for carrying out this research is based on the premise that although some specific works have already been carried out on the RN’s cliffs, describing their environmental conditions, and reporting some problems related to the use and occupation of the soil, none of them dedicated themselves to conducting a classificatory analysis of this morphological feature. Thus, performing this work implies filling this gap. As for the social relevance of this research, it is in the identification of the environmental situation of the cliffs. They are landscape inheritances which safeguard the marks not only of physiographic and biological processes, however they are also the collective heritage of the people from Rio Grande do Norte. The relevance of identifying the environmental situation of the cliffs is in the fact that they are landscape elements of great scenic beauty, although, paradoxically, they have great environmental fragility, due to their genetic, stratigraphic, and morphological characteristics. In addition, the occupation of the coastal region of Rio Grande do Norte, similar to other Brazilian states, has been occurring irregularly. It does not respect the limits defined by the resolutions of the Conselho Nacional do Meio Ambiente (CONAMA). The resolutions were standardized in 2002, and define the use and occupation of coastal areas, particularly on escarpments with a slope greater than 45°. That said, this work starts from the hypothesis that the classification of potiguares cliffs can be carried out according to their natural characteristics and forms of use and occupation. In view of this, the qualitative methodology used was developed to be divided into three stages, namely: survey of data on the cliffs, in particular the RN; execution of field work; and elaboration of cartographic material. Having defined the cliff categories, their characterization was accomplished regarding the compliance or not with the environmental legislation that deals with the environmental conditions of use of these features to identify the resulting environmental impacts. The results indicate the existence of 5 (five) types of cliffs classified according to the shape of the escarpments (horizontal stratification, stratigraphic discontinuity, convex cliff, protruding cliff and irregular escarpment); and some subclasses defined based on the integration of criteria such as lithology, morphodynamic situation, vegetation cover and influence of climatic subtypes. Some other features were also identified, they were: a ruiniform feature supported by eolianites; abrasion terraces modeled on the Barreiras Formation; and arches made of ferruginous sandstones. Therefore, from the information produced in this doctoral work, it is possible to conclude that there are environmental impacts generated by the non-compliance with the use and occupation laws of the cliffs and that this non-compliance, added to other natural factors of the RN cliffs, make them represent a risk, which makes the existence of the proposed classification a tool for drafting more specific and effective laws and thus preventing accidents.
