| Abstract | Environmental contamination by persistent and toxic organic pollutants, such as industrial dyes, represents a serious global threat. These pollutants are resistant to traditional treatment methods and accumulate in the environment, damaging water and soil quality, biodiversity and human health. Given this scenario, this study proposed to synthesize and characterize a new SrTiO3/BiOIO3 heterostructure with different proportions of the constituent semiconductors using the microwave-assisted hydrothermal method. The photocatalyst properties were investigated by XRD, FTIR, SEM-FEG, UV–vis/DRS, BET, PL, EIS and Zeta potential. The photoactivity of the samples was evaluated in methylene blue solution and in ternary mixtures of cationic and anionic dyes under direct exposure to sunlight. The heterostructure prepared in the ratio 2:1-SrTiO3/BiOIO3 exhibited the best photocatalytic activity, degrading almost all of the dyes in just 30 min of treatment. This performance was attributed to a reduction in bandgap energy, a lower charge carrier recombination rate and an increase in specific surface area. Experimental tests confirmed the participation of the ●OH and ●O2- radicals in the photocatalytic process. In addition, the heterostructure showed excellent photostability after multiple reuse cycles | |
