The superficiality of visual perception has resulted in a [figuratively] blind society, accommodated to images as visual stimuli that do not require critical and reflective visual reading. The aim of this work was to present audio description linked to a methodological proposal as a way of describing images in the process of image reading in Visual Arts teaching. To this end, the study was based on bibliographical research of an applied nature that followed a qualitative approach, arguing about the relationship between man and the image over time (Monteiro, 2013), establishing discussions about the image (Mitchell, 2005; Joly, 2007), concepts of visuality and center-visuality in contemporary’s society (Coelho, 2006; Bavcar, 2014), and dialoguing with types of visual accessibility (Motta, 2016), the teaching of Visual Arts (Barbosa, 2014; 2016) and image reading (Costella, 2010). The research observed that, in the scenario of contemporary society, in order to understand the subjectivity behind an image there is a need to re-educate the gaze and that, for this, alternative perception strategies can be used.
