To develop this work, we used bibliographic research, observation, application of semi-structured interviews and questionnaires, as well as discourse analysis and an adaptation of symbolic cartography, a method of data interpretation proposed by the Portuguese sociologist Boaventura de Sousa Santos (2002), to represent, through an analytical-descriptive map, the spaces, subjects, practices and discourses predominant in this type of cultural manifestation. From the results obtained, we observed that rap battles can be considered forms of counter-hegemonic popular communication, given the link observed between rap music and social issues and the struggles against different forms of oppression.
