    This professional master's thesis aims to develop an architectural design for a guesthouse with an emphasis on low environmental impact, located on the banks of the Catolé River, in Pureza, Rio Grande do Norte. This topic choice is justified by the disorderly growth of tourism in environmentally protected areas and the recurring lack of projects that consider the area's environmental characteristics, causing negative impacts and harming the quality of life of local communities. This observation is observed in the author's professional practice as an environmental analyst for processes in an environmental licensing and inspection agency. The specific objectives guiding this work are: a) to verify the contributions of incorporating an environmental diagnosis of the area, since the pre-design phase, to the architectural solution; b) to determine which land use and occupation strategies can be considered low environmental impact in environmentally fragile areas; c) to identify the contribution of multidisciplinary collaborative processes to the architectural design process in environmentally fragile areas. To develop the architectural proposal, a theoretical and conceptual analysis was conducted on topics related to lodging projects, sustainable development, and areas of environmental fragility, environmental constraints, and a multidisciplinary collaborative process through bibliographic research and studies of design references (precedents or related). Prior to the design, the architectural program was developed considering the environmental assessment of the area conducted by a multidisciplinary team, the legal and regulatory constraints, and the concept to define the project's dilemmas and goals. Based on this foundation, and with the support of the course's courses, the design process was gradually developed. The pre-design and preliminary study stages were mapped using IDEFØ. As a result of the studies conducted, a project proposal was reached with low-environmental-impact design solutions compatible with the environmental conditions of the site and surrounding area. It is concluded that it is possible to propose a tourist exploration project in an area of environmental fragility, as long as an environmental diagnosis is carried out in the early phases of the project with the participation of the multidisciplinary team, contributing not only to the survey of the characteristics related to the physical, biotic and socioeconomic environments, but also identifying solutions that could be adopted to minimize the environmental impact of the proposed activity, and, thus, enabling the achievement of the low environmental impact goal.

    This Master’s degree final project aims to develop the preliminary design of a public elementary school for the city of Natal, Brazil, with a focus on spatial flexibility and the STEAM pedagogical approach—an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics. The specific objectives guiding the research were: (a) to understand the operational dynamics of an elementary school, considering its goals and user needs; (b) to study the STEAM approach and how it can influence design solutions for educational environments; (c) to research spatial flexibility guidelines in school architecture; and (d) to adopt design strategies and construction/structural systems that support flexibility. This study is justified by a reflection on contemporary reality and emerging social demands related to childhood and adolescence, recognizing students as active, creative, and transformative subjects. This highlights the urgency of designing educational environments that support and stimulate diverse ways of learning, creating, and socializing. The architectural proposal was grounded in theoretical and conceptual research through a literature review and analysis of design precedents. Subsequently, an architectural program was developed, identifying project dilemmas and goals. Based on this foundation—and supported by the course’s curricular components—the design process was developed gradually through various records, from initial contextual studies to environmental comfort simulations, including the conception and development of the architectural concept. The final outcome is the preliminary design of MolecoLar School, located on a 15,000 m² corner plot in the Ponta Negra neighborhood. With a built area of 3,106.31 m², the school consists mainly of single-story buildings interconnected by covered walkways that fluidly organize the covered and open courtyards, differentiated by age group. The architectural layout is divided into seven built sectors: (1) entrance courtyard, administration, and auditorium; (2) central axis with shared-use rooms and a covered courtyard distributing flow to the other blocks; (3) elementary school block I; (4) elementary school block II; (5) sports court with locker rooms; (6) arena theater; and (7) service courtyard with gas and waste facilities. To support both the STEAM approach and spatial flexibility, a modular base was adopted for classrooms, organized by subject areas and separated by storage rooms. This solution facilitates layout changes and enhances versatility of use. Another key feature is the dialogue between the school and the community, enabled by design solutions that allow shared use of spaces such as the auditorium and, especially, the park/plaza at the front of the site. As a result, the project delivers an architecture that serves the society of the future - designed to support quality education and capable of teaching by itself, acting as a “third teacher.”

    This Professional Master’s Degree Final Project aims to conceive a crematorium-park with an emphasis on potential architectural atmospheres. In the current context, crematoria present themselves as an alternative to address environmental and land-use issues associated with conventional cemeteries, while also offering greater flexibility in the face of cultural transformations related to death, dying, and mourning. The study was based on reflections on death in contemporary society and on the evolution of cremation practices, with a focus on the Brazilian context. It also discussed the foundations of phenomenology and its influence on architecture, in order to understand how this philosophical approach, whose existential intersections directly engage with the theme, can guide the design of funerary spaces. The analysis of reference projects, in turn, expanded the repertoire and provided a more empirical understanding. Added to this was the immersion in the intervention site, located in the neighborhood of Felipe Camarão, in Natal/RN, aimed at identifying physical, environmental, and legal constraints. Based on this process, design dilemmas and goals were established with the intention of overcoming a strictly functional perspective, incorporating symbolic dimensions capable of engaging with diverse audiences. The design concept sought to balance material and immaterial aspects, reconciling the diversity of uses with the surroundings and respecting the ritual-architectural path of the bereaved. Thus, Grão, as it was named, presents in its final version the integration between natural and built environments, structured through the unfolding of eight sectors across the site: (1) Psychology of Mourning, (2) Reception, (3) Administration, (4) Cremation, (5) Ceremony, (6) Memory, (7) Support, and (8) Living, totaling 5,876.73 m² of built area. The site plan seeks to enhance the permeability of the park, which envelops and connects the buildings, making the landscape a structuring element of the experience. From a technical standpoint, the preliminary design adopts feasible structural solutions, associated with materials of strong symbolic and sensory value, such as terracotta toned cyclopean concrete, natural stone, and wood. Sustainable strategies include rainwater harvesting, green roofs, cross ventilation, natural lighting, and the use of native species in landscaping, fostering biodiversity and local identity. As a result, the population of Rio Grande do Norte is offered the proposal of a funerary facility integrated into a park, compatible with emerging demand and capable of encompassing all stages of the rite – from separation to transition and the incorporation of memory.

    This professional master’s degree’s final work, structured as a technical report, presents an adaptive reuse project of a building listed as national heritage of the railway system, and intends to turn it into housing to the homeless population and to implement services tied to Centro Pop Natal, focusing on the creation of the housing unit. The main subject of this work addresses the housing shortage in Brazil, the precariousness faced by the homeless population and the ineffectiveness of Brazilian public policies, highlighting the urgent need for safe, sustainable and socially inclusive housing solutions. The general objective of this work is to develop an adaptive reuse architectural project that meets the concept of adequate housing, considering the specific needs of the homeless population and the characteristics of the territorial context of Natal. The specific objectives include: understanding the needs of the homeless population and the territorial challenges; examining the quality criteria for social housing; and defining project guidelines of intervention based on the conditions of the building and the new Minha Casa Minha Vida (MCMV) program. The development of the project encompassed a theoretical and conceptual background, reference studies, characterization of the land, identification of dilemmas and project goals. The process was mapped and registered from the earliest stages of conception until the definition of the design concept. The achieved result is a project that balances the preservation of the railway system’s heritage with the functionality of a social housing program, prioritizing habitability, environmental comfort and community integration.

    This Final Course Work deals with the requalification of the architectural complex of heritage value of IFRN Cidade Alta, in Natal-RN, with emphasis on thermal comfort, through a preliminary intervention project that aligns the valorization of preexisting buildings with a new use – the course of Technology in Cultural Production. Initially, the historical contextualization of the building complex is presented, highlighting its relevance as cultural heritage and its role in the urban configuration of the neighborhood in which it is located. Then, concepts and theories on requalification and restoration are discussed and four studies of design references are presented. In addition to these theoretical and empirical bases, the methodology of the work involved the analysis of various environmental conditions, legislation and specific technical standards, resulting in an understanding of the current conditions and potential of the architectural complex. Based on the results obtained, combined with the knowledge acquired in the course subjects, an intervention proposal was drawn up that sought to balance the preservation of the pre-existing historical and architectural value with the insertion of a new building with contemporary features and, in both cases, solutions to improve thermal comfort, essential for the proposed educational use. The final proposal demonstrated that it is possible to reconcile respect for the memory of historical buildings and their adaptation to the demands of contemporary times.

    This master’s degree Final Project consists of a technical project for architectural intervention and a technical report for a religious building intended for a Catholic liturgical space with an emphasis on ambiance and environmental comfort, for the city of Caicó/RN. Sacred spaces, par excellence Catholic environments, must present certain characteristics to be erected as a liturgical celebratory space - a place where religious and sacramental services can be performed in the spirit of prayer and the supreme dignity of the celebration of the Eucharist. In addition to this, there must be concepts, design tools, presentation, and exposition of design methods, good construction techniques and bringing the benefits of ambiance and environmental comfort to the space to be designed. The objective is to develop an architectural proposal based on issues of spatial ambiance and environmental comfort, which promotes well-being and provides conditions for connection with the sacred and its users. To develop this proposal, a theoretical and conceptual study of the topic was initially carried out through bibliographical research and studies of previous or related design references, followed by the development of the architectural program, definition of dilemmas and goals of the project. Based on the content covered in the course's curricular components, the design process was gradually developed and mapped, through various forms of recording, from the initial stages of studies of constraints, conception and up to the development of the architectural concept. Considering the specific objectives, the work sought architectural strategies to maximize the comfort conditions in the built environment, considering the aspects related to the form and the use of this spatial typology. The results achieved consist of a project formed by two interconnected blocks, the main building, intended for celebrations (the church itself) and the second support building, incorporating the building of the previous existing chapel, promoting the integration of the new and old spaces, and the structure. This solution aimed to preserve some building characteristics to eternalize the memory of the place so important to the community. It is expected that this project proposal will have achieved the established objectives.

    This master's thesis comprises an architectural proposal for a vertical multifamily residential building with an emphasis on energy efficiency. The document is composed of two volumes: the first consists of the technical report, and the second contains the architectural design. The objective was to develop a vertical residential architectural project with a focus on the energy performance of the building envelope using Building Information Modeling (BIM) tools, in association with the parameters of Inmetro’s Normative Instruction for residential buildings. The integration of regulatory parameters into Revit was envisioned, with automated verification tables developed to facilitate compliance checking. To achieve this, Eastman et al.'s (2009) framework for automated design verification was applied, and the RASE method was used to evaluate and translate rules from natural language into computational language. After creating the automated tables, the project was developed using Revit as the primary modeling software. Following multiple analysis iterations, a 27-story residential building was designed, with a constructed area of 8,807m² and 34 housing units. The application of verification tables was essential in defining the building's openings, volumetric composition, and full-empty relationships. Nevertheless, the normative instruction imposes constraints on the design process, such as the requirement that spaces must be predefined before compliance verification can take place. Additionally, the software employed has various limitations in its applied mathematical logic and requires maintaining a dedicated model that must be continuously updated as the project advances to ensure ongoing validation with the standard. This study reinforces both the potential and limitations of automated rule verification in architectural design.

    This professional master's qualification work consists of the development of the architectural design of a mixed-use building in Natal/RN, emphasizing the discussion of the architecture of well-being as a means of qualifying living. This document is composed of a technical report and the development of the architectural project. As a result of the behavioral changes resulting from the covid 19 pandemic, especially in the residential environment, it was possible to perceive a growing interest in horizontal buildings. In Natal and the metropolitan region, it was possible to identify, through the interpretation of satellite images, the expressive crowding in horizontal condominiums during the pandemic. In that scenario, social isolation as one of the most effective practices in combating the spread of the disease led many people to develop illnesses, such as depression. It is believed that families residing in multifamily buildings were the most affected, especially due to the spatial limitations that are often characteristic of this housing model. From the previous reflections, the question is: how should vertical multifamily projects respond to the space of living, especially in the post-pandemic? The hypothesis is that multifamily residential projects centered on the well-being of users should respond to the main demands of today and tomorrow. In this way, the general objective of the work is to develop an architectural proposal in the form of a preliminary design of a mixed-use building conceived from the perspective of well-being. To achieve this, we seek to research the main spatial and behavioral transformations of users in the residential environment during the covid 19 pandemic, study design guidelines based on the concepts of well-being, quality of life and the person-environment relationship and apply, also in the design process guidelines that can validate an architecture based on this concept. Methodologically, systematic studies in dissertations, theses and various articles with related themes were carried out, with the intention of providing a theoreticalconceptual basis so that, subsequently, the architectural proposal would be supported technically as well as theoretically. Studies of indirect references in several projects were carried out, which significantly helped in the programmatic and plastic definitions of the building under development. Based on the disciplines taken in the referred program, the design process was being developed and improved, generating interesting discussions regarding the concept of the project, its architectural approach, the intentional choice of the land, the studies of urban conditions and prescriptions and, finally, the development of a satisfactory project proposal.Thus, the result is reflected in a mixed-use building with 6 floors and 24 housing units divided into 04 different typologies per floor and with the possibility of making its plans more flexible. With a total built area of 2,919.52m², in addition to the private units, the project included, in the common areas, environments consistent with the results of the research made available in the theoretical-conceptual framework. The intention is to encourage collaborative discussions on the topic of quality housing. It is expected, with this partial work, to be meeting the minimum requirements for continuation in this program, so that the development of the work results in collaborative discussions for those most interested due to the relevant theme of living with quality

    This professional master's degree completion work consists of a technical design proposal for the requalification of a school building with a focus on the principles of biophilic design, located in Natal-RN. Biophilic design is a way of creating environments using natural resources, aiming to improve the health and well-being of those who live there. Biophilia aims to rescue natural environments and bring them to built spaces. Understanding that biophilia can contribute to improving the quality of school spaces, the work aims to develop a requalification proposal for the Alberto Torres State School, based on the principles and strategies of biophilic design. For the development of the project, a theoretical-conceptual deepening of the topic and the target audience was carried out, through bibliographical research, design reference studies and field research. With the help of the subjects taught in the course, initial studies were carried out on the universe of study and users, as well as on environmental, physical and legal aspects. Then, the design conception and path, the architectural programming was developed with the identification of dilemmas and the definition of design goals, the definition of the concept and architectural design, the carrying out of studies and simulations through environmental comfort strategies. The results found consist of a requalification proposal that sought the optimized use of the existing building structure, insertions and adjustments that would bring more docility to the space, without disregarding issues linked to building maintenance. Furthermore, the inclusion of natural elements in physical spaces allows for good use of these spaces, which will be reflected in the relationship between users and the environments, consequently contributing to improving the teaching-learning process offered by the school. It is concluded that the discussion about the importance of studies on school architecture in the theoretical and practical spheres allowed the development of a product that portrayed the reflective process arising from carrying out theoretical-design studies and research. This design solution is expected to meet the set objectives.
