(Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, 2026-06-23) Santos, Ana Beatriz Medeiros; Costa, Adriano Medeiros; Alves, Victória Zilmara; Pinheiro, Miriam Moema Filgueira; Guimarães, Francisco de Assis Duarte
This course completion work is an experimental project composed of a photo-reportage and a technical report that explore the sociocultural meanings of the Feast of Sant'Ana in Currais Novos/RN. The main objective is to produce a photojournalistic record that demonstrates the role of the festivity in maintaining collective memory and consolidating Seridoense identity, documenting the human relationships and invisible mechanisms that sustain this secular tradition. For the theoretical framework, the research mobilized concepts of Literary Journalism (Pena, 2007; Castro, 2010), Humanized Journalism (Bortoli, 2016; Alves & Sebrian, 2008), as well as reflections on photography, memory, and the construction of imagined communities based on Sontag (2004), Anderson (2008), and Hobsbawm (2008). The methodology comprised bibliographic research, ethnographic immersion with participant observation, and the conducting of 19 interviews with diverse social actors, including devotees, workers, authorities, and historians. The visual recording was executed through documentary and ethnographic photography, integrating technique and sensitivity in the material's curation process. As a conclusion, the project highlights the Feast of Sant'Ana not only as a religious event but as a pact of belonging and cultural resistance that articulates the sacred and the profane, serving as a visual testimony to the history and identity of Currais Novos.

The analysis of dynamic processes is frequently based on the theory of Linear Time-Invariant (LTI) systems. In geophysics, wave propagation through the geological medium is described by the wave equation. Under certain simplifying assumptions, the seismic trace recorded during acquisition can be approximated by an LTI convolutional model, in which the source wavelet is convolved with the medium's reflectivity. The associated inverse problem, known as deconvolution, constitutes a highly relevant tool in digital seismic signal processing, enabling the estimation of subsurface reflectivity from the recorded signals. Although classical approaches assume Gaussian noise, real seismic data in certain geological environments may exhibit non-Gaussian noise, compromising the effectiveness of traditional methods based on the $\ell_2$-norm. This work presents a robust deconvolution method for seismic data severely affected by impulsive noise, modeled by $\alpha$-stable distributions. The proposed approach is based on minimizing the $\ell_p$ quasi-norm (with $0 < p < 1$) combined with an $\ell_1$ regularization term to promote the sparsity of the estimated signal. The resulting optimization problem is solved iteratively using a gradient descent algorithm. The method was evaluated using synthetic seismic traces, and the results demonstrate that the appropriate choice of the parameter $p$ overcomes the limitations of traditional $\ell_1$ and $\ell_2$ formulations, mitigating the effect of \textit{outliers} and significantly improving the quality of seismic reflectivity estimation, thereby validating the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm

This study investigates the application of Machine Learning techniques to the forecasting and financial provisioning of regulatory penalties associated with the Regulatory Management Performance Indicator (INDGER), aiming to anticipate operational and budgetary impacts on electricity distribution utilities. Given the high data sparsity and the volatility inherent to heavy-tailed distributions, the ability to estimate liabilities arising from commercial compliance violations is essential for enhancing corporate governance and financial planning processes. The study employed a consolidated historical database covering the period from 2023 to 2025, comprising data from six Brazilian electricity distribution companies. The dataset was analyzed through a two-stage hybrid computational architecture. In the first stage, a Random Forest Classifier with utility-specific optimized decision thresholds was used to identify transactions with a high likelihood of generating regulatory penalties. Based on this classification filter, the second stage focused on continuous regression using either Random Forest Regressor models or the LightGBM gradient boosting framework under a logarithmic transformation to estimate the monetary value of penalties. The results demonstrated that the integrated pipeline effectively mitigated false positives and significantly reduced the Mean Absolute Error (MAE). Furthermore, the application of the Seasonal Projection Technique enabled the statistical completion of future months in 2026, resulting in an estimated cumulative corporate liability of R$ 30.34 million for the group of utilities analyzed. The findings indicate that the proposed approach is feasible and presents strong potential to support regulatory risk management and strategic budgetary decision-making within the electricity sector.

Matrix acidizing operations are widely used in the petroleum industry to restore or enhance well productivity by dissolving formation damage within the reservoir rock. However, the interaction between acidic fluids and certain types of crude oil, especially those containing asphaltenic compounds, can lead to the formation of highly stable acid-oil emulsions. These emulsions impair stimulation efficiency, hinder phase separation, increase operating costs, and intensify problems related to corrosion, scaling, and equipment wear. In this context, demulsification becomes a fundamental step in ensuring the operational efficiency and sustainability of oil production processes. The present study aims to develop the conceptual design of a pilot-scale unit for the treatment of acid-oil emulsions, employing modeling and process simulation tools to evaluate its technical and economic performance. The methodology adopted is based on a literature review of emulsion formation and stabilization mechanisms, demulsification technologies, and separation processes used in the petroleum industry, complemented by simplified process modeling using the DWSIM software. As a result, a process flow diagram for the pilot unit was developed, the main operating conditions were defined, mass and energy balances for the involved process streams were established, and the preliminary sizing of the system's main equipment was carried out. In addition, an estimate of the unit's capital and operating costs was performed to support a preliminary techno-economic feasibility analysis. It can be concluded that the use of process simulation in the development of emulsion treatment units constitutes an effective tool for evaluating design alternatives, reducing development costs, and minimizing risks associated with industrial implementation.

This study examines how celebrity branding constructs meanings within the social imaginary through strategic communication. Strategic communication plays a central role in ensuring the continuous connection between organizations and their stakeholders (Kunsch, 2002). The study is grounded in the concept of archetypes as discussed by Mark (2024) and Costa (2025). Media auditing was employed as a methodological approach, following Barichello and Scheid (2006), to assess the presence of corporations and individuals within the media environment (Bueno, 2005). Drawing on Jung’s analytical psychology, the research analyzes Angelina Jolie’s personal brand and maps the transition from an initial identity marked by public crises to a more mature positioning characterized by authority and nurturance. To achieve this, the study applies an original media analysis method focused on identifying discursive regularities. The findings reveal a turning point that operated as a filtering mechanism, channeling Jolie’s drives and redefining her media presence. This process resulted in the fusion of previously opposing positioning strategies, giving rise to an unprecedented identity configuration. The results validate the proposed model and contribute to the advancement of theoretical studies on personal branding within academia.

(Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, 2026-07-03) Oliveira, Juan Carlos de Souza Lima e; Neves, Leandro César Santana; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-8829-313X; http://lattes.cnpq.br/1647296759249155; https://orcid.org/0009-0001-8206-3317; http://lattes.cnpq.br/9476079458474680
The absence of content on mongol expansion in history textbooks is a significant gap in Brazilian education. This research aims to analyze this deficiency, highlighting the importance in world history and the impacts of its omission in the school curriculum. An analysis will be presented, first, of the presence, permissibility and feasibility of correlations between the Mongols of Chinggis Khan and the Brazilian historical trajectory; then, the scenario of Asian studies and Brazilian nomadists; and, to conclude, to propose an explanation of why the Mongolian advance in Brazilian Basic Education is taught. To this end, the four aspects of comparison proposed by Jürgen Kocka will be used; the perspective of Eurípedes Simões de Paula on the study of contents distant from the Brazilian reality and the conceptualizations of "empire" proposed by Jane Richardson Burbank and Frederick Cooper.

Jornalismo e inteligência artificial: uma análise do uso da IA pelos jornalistas da Tribuna do Norte, Agora RN e Novo Notícias
(Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, 2026-04-06) Torres, Kyara Jamille Oliveira; Condorelli, Antonino
The use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools is already a reality in newsrooms around the world. Against this backdrop, this study aims to analyze the applications of AI by journalists at the Natal-based newspapers Tribuna do Norte, Novo Notícias and Agora RN, guided by the following question: How do professionals at these media outlets use AI in their daily work? The theoretical framework is based on the contributions of Cruz and Santaella (2024) and Canavilhas (2023) regarding the uses of this technology in the journalistic context and draws on the concepts of artificial intelligence (Russell; Norvig, 2013; Nicolelis, 2023), automated journalism (Carlson, 2015), and AI-assisted journalism (Fernandes, 2025). To collect the data, individual semi-structured interviews (Duarte, 2005) were conducted with three journalist-editors from each publication. The material was analyzed using the technique of thematic content analysis systematized by Bardin (2011). The results indicated that journalists use artificial intelligence largely to perform repetitive tasks in their daily workflows, particularly during the newsgathering and production stages. Furthermore, AI has provided greater agility and productivity, allowing professionals to cope with the time pressures characteristic of journalistic work and to fulfill a multimedia role. It is concluded that artificial intelligence has been employed as a tool to assist journalistic work, creating a hybrid relationship between humans and technology.
