In the 1920s, Luís da Câmara Cascudo was part of a prominent intellectual networkthat brought together Brazilians and Argentinians in a movement that explored, through literature, paths for the affirmation of a Latin American political, artistic, andcultural identity. Collaborating with authors such as Monteiro Lobato, MáriodeAndrade, and Ronald de Carvalho, among others, Cascudo becameakeyinterlocutor in the exchange of ideas, goods, and values that aimed to foster cultural development guided by reciprocal knowledge and mutual understandingbetweenBrazil and Argentina. This study builds upon previous research, notably themaster'sthesis Câmara Cascudo e a Argentina intelectual: um Joio na searalatino-americana" (MEDEIROS, 2016), which examined Cascudo's itinerary androleasamediator of literary productions between Brazil and Argentina. This thesis expandson that research, proposing an intersection of the biographies and works of Cascudoand Robert Lehmann-Nitsche, based on their correspondence fromthe 1920sand1930s. Lehmann-Nitsche, a German ethnologist who directed the Department of Anthropology at the Museo de La Plata from 1897 to 1930, was a prominent researcher of popular traditions and folklore in Argentina, facilitatingcultural exchange between Europe and South America. The dialogue between CascudoandLehmann-Nitsche reflects the dynamic intellectual spirit of early 20th-centuryLatinAmerica, where intellectuals sought to understand national cultures throughliterature. This study engages with recent perspectives in Comparative Literature andLatinAmerican Literary Historiography (CANDIDO, 2006, 2011; RAMA, 1985; PIZARRO, 2004), which emphasize the need for decolonization and contextualizedanalysis. Drawing on Cultural Transfers (ESPAGNE, 2012, 2017; RODRIGUES, 2010), thisresearch analyzes mediation processes, highlighting the roles of CascudoandLehmann-Nitsche as cultural mediators

Both poetry and song have a sound universe, a field of perceptions, representations, affections, criticisms, traditions and ruptures. The sound perspective is based on the word as a minimal sound component, a word that is present in poetry and song. Thus, as suggested by the title, the thesis seeks to investigate musicality in the work of poet João Cabral de Melo Neto and songwriter Antônio Carlos Belchior, both Brazilians born in the northeast region of the country. João Cabral de Melo Neto, a poet from Pernambuco, has a very specific relationship with music itself and with the musical consequences of the poem. A theme dear to the poet, music and musicality do not go unnoticed in his work and in our focus they gain a prominent place. Antônio Carlos Belchior, in turn, develops his compositional system based on the poetic content of his lyrics, tensioning the symbiosis of song (lyrics and melody). The research is of the qualitative type, revisiting the theoretical and bibliographical framework, at the same time, in which it carries out the analysis of poems and songs, an analysis that starts from the source of these complex poetic-musical rivers and investigates both the traditional complex of the meter of the verse, the rhyme, the stanzas, as well as the dialogical complexes that each work has, poetry and song, with social, aesthetic and cultural structures. In the elaboration of the discussion, some theoretical pillars were erected, such as the perception of literature and music as transdisciplinary and interdependent knowledge; Comparative Literature as a set of tools that help in dealing with a hybrid object, between literature and music; and Baroque and Neo-Baroque as structures for understanding the arts of João Cabral and Belchior. The research points to a change in the interpretation of Cabral's anti-musicality, suggesting a path from tonality to atonality based on a reflective, critical and theoretical analysis that divides his work into two rivers, into two dictions, one tonal and the other atonal. Belchior's musicality follows similar critical paths. With a proposal for rational art, the Belchior songbook (goliard robot) conducts its musicality through a critical dialogue between tradition and artistic rupture (musical and poetic). To approach Belchior's musicality, we followed the paths of his rational work in dialogue with the neo-baroque to understand the “terrestrial” bodies that orbit in his song universe, they are painters, poets and composers who appear in constant dialogue.

The use of games in language teaching has increasingly been explored as a pedagogical strategy, particularly concerning motivation and implicit learning. This thesis investigates the impact of the collectible card game Magic: The Gathering on English as a second language (L2) learning among 8th-grade students from public schools in Natal/RN. The study's main objective is to assess whether integrating Magic: The Gathering into L2 teaching can contribute to improving reading comprehension and reading of conditional sentences, as well as analyzing its impact on student motivation. The research was conducted with 76 students, aged between 13 and 15, divided into experimental and control groups. The theoretical-methodological foundation is based on game-based learning, drawing from Gee (2008) and Prensky (2012), as well as studies by Brown (2007), Souza and Almeida (2007), and Thomas and Reinders (2010). For second language acquisition, the study relies on Lightbown and Spada (2013), while Gardner’s theory (1983) supports the analysis of motivation. Additionally, the reading model by Gagné et al. (1993) and contributions from Forster et al. (2009) in the field of cognitive psycholinguistics provide insight into the cognitive processes involved. Csikszentmihalyi’s (1990) flow theory underpins the analysis of participant motivation during the intervention. Pre-tests and post-tests were administered to measure the performance of the experimental and control groups in reading comprehension. Data were analyzed separately for male and female students in all stages of the study. The results suggest that the use of the game can significantly increase student motivation and improve the reading of conditional sentences. However, no evidence was found that Magic: The Gathering has a significant impact on overall reading comprehension. These findings highlight the potential of strategic card games as a pedagogical tool in language teaching, contributing to the fields of Applied Linguistics and Psycholinguistics by providing empirical data on their use in educational contexts.

This research, grounded in the theoretical-methodological framework of variationist sociolinguistics, analyzes the discourse variation between the conjunctional periphrases SÓ QUE and SENDO QUE in the codification of opposition by counterexpectation. r this purpose, 500 tokens of each periphrasis were extracted from Corpus do Português. The following factor groups were quantitatively controlled: (i) semantic-pragmatic functions: differentiation marking, marking of dissatisfaction with conditions, marking of unexpected or undesirable events, marking of refutation, and marking of counter-argumentation; (ii) discursive genres: news and report; (iii) position of periphrasis: beginning of period and beginning of clause; (iv) discourse type: authorial and quotation; and (v) topic: football, celebrity, politics, security, economy, entertainment, sport, health, etc. After encoding the variants according to the factor groups, statistical analyses were conducted using GoldVarb X software. The findings indicate that the semantic-pragmatic functions of marking difference, non-satisfaction of conditions, and unexpected or undesired events favored the use of SÓ QUE. In contrast, the marking of rectification and counter-argumentation favored the use of SENDO QUE. Additionally, the news genre, characterized by a blend of formal and informal registers, showed a preference for SÓ QUE, while reports, which typically exhibit a higher degree of formality, favored SENDO QUE. Informal reported speech demonstrated a tendency towards SÓ QUE, whereas formal non-reported speech showed a preference for SENDO QUE. Furthermore, simpler subjects were associated with the use of SÓ QUE, while more complex subjects favored SENDO QUE. It was also observed that SENDO QUE appeared more frequently at the beginning of clauses, whereas SÓ QUE was more commonly used at the beginning of periods, a position often linked to informality in coordinating conjunctions. These findings suggest that stylistic considerations play a significant role in the selection between the conjunctional periphrasis SÓ QUE and SENDO QUE when encoding oppositional relations through counter-expectation in journalistic texts.

This dissertation, written in the first person, takes on the characteristics of performative f(r)ictional writing (Lyra, 2020), enabling the exercise of crossroads (Martins, 1997) between: the cycle of domestic violence that occurred in my family life; The performative soil entitled A Receita (Santos, 2010), which addresses the vulnerable situation of a black woman in a state of revolt against structural machismo and aspects of the Purple Hibiscus (Adichie, 2011). The f(r)iction (Lyra, 2011; 2015) between the life that experienced violence and the works that portray violence, combined with Spiral Time (Martins, 2021), brings these strands closer to mirroring that create the atmosphere of the experience of the past, present and future simultaneously, while also sustaining our stories for ourselves, as in an aquilombamento (Nascimento, 1985; Dias, 2022). Methodologically, the research will start from reflections on black theater (Lima, 2011), (Barbosa, 2021) and black feminisms (hooks, 2013; Gonzalez, 1979; 1984; 2018; Collins, 2017; Carneiro, 2003). As well as, by way of practice, will articulate presentations of the show A Receita in the composition of the Performic Research (Fernandes, 2014), with the workshop entitled by Pisando o Alho carried out for black women in the metropolitan region of Recife. These articulated actions aim to open the way for reflections on how black theater based on a poetics of the body and ancestry (Santos, 2015) can counteract violence by providing stimulation of the social healing of black women.

The research presented originated in 2016, when we became aware of a project called “Histórias do Alto Risco” (Stories of High Risk), developed at the Maternidade Januário Cicco in Natal/RN by the hospital's psychological support team. The project aimed to assist pregnant patients during hospitalization due to gestational complications, with the goal of documenting their experiences and emotions in diaries, either during hospitalization or in their daily lives prior to hospitalization. In light of this, the research aimed to describe the “Histórias do Alto Risco” project developed by the psychological support team at the Maternidade Escola Januário Cicco/Natal-RN in its care for pregnant women, based on the accounts of the professionals responsible for its implementation. The research also aimed to map the literacy practices that permeate the project, characterize the records in the “Histórias do Alto Risco” notebooks as health literacy practices, and highlight their impacts for the pregnant women, based on the perspectives of those who proposed the project. To do so, we relied on the voices represented by the professionals responsible for the project. The investigation is situated in the field of Applied Linguistics (Moita Lopes, 2006; Kleiman; Vianna; De Grando, 2019), and consists of a field research type (Gil, 2008), with a qualitative approach to data (Bogdan; Biklen, 1994). Two professionals, who are part of the psychological support team at the maternity hospital, participated in the research, and their responses to questionnaires and semi-structured interviews form the corpus of analysis. The theoretical framework is based on discussions from Literacy Studies as a social practice (Kleiman, 1995; 2014; Oliveira, 2007), health literacy (Paz, 2008), as well as studies on the therapeutic aspects of writing (Sexton; Pennebaker, 2009), among others. The results of the study point to the importance of the literacy practices in the project, which, when combined with medical/hospital treatment, significantly helped women navigate the hospitalization process with more ease and awareness. The significance of this work lies in its contribution to academic discussions about literacy practices developed in health institutional settings, emphasizing the situated, multiple, identity-forming, and empowering nature of literacies.

A fauna rupestre de João Cabral de Melo Neto
(Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, 2025-01-16) Cadó, Júlio César de Araújo; Araújo, Rosanne Bezerra de; https://orcid.org/0000-0003-4308-3881; http://lattes.cnpq.br/7328556088478313; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-3304-8022; http://lattes.cnpq.br/6837932292601956; Macedo, Erika Bezerra Cruz de; Lima, Tânia Maria de Araújo
In this dissertation, I intend to broaden the boundaries of the receptive, poetic and imaginary systems that surround João Cabral de Melo Neto through the elaboration of an analytical-interpretative reading of his poetry guided by the presence of animals and forms of animality, under the prism of Zoopoetics. This study is guided by the understanding of Cabral's creative stance as a poetics attentive to otherness, including, in this inventory, animals. Situated in the field of Comparative Literature, from a methodological point of view I consider the transitive aspect of the poetic text and the valential relationship between literary studies and other fields of knowledge, such as Philosophy, Ethology and Zoology. I aim to build a catalogue of the animals written by the author in order to characterise the ways in which these non-human living beings are formalised in his poetic work. In pursuing this goal, I specifically intend to: i) map words and images belonging to the zoological semantic field present in Cabral’s work; ii) trace the value trajectory of animality in the entirety of Cabral’s poetics; iii) unveil the mechanisms by which animals are engendered in the author’s poems; and iv) examine the ways in which some of these animals are apprehended in the fabric of the composition. In accordance with this research horizon, I propose a bifurcation of the reading in order to contemplate an extensive movement, encompassing the totality of the volumes of poetry, and an intensive one, with the aim of leading the interpretative effort towards a collection of poems, namely: “Poema(s) da cabra”, “Formas do nu”, “O urubu mobilizado” e “Touro andaluz”. The corpus was selected on the basis of perception of the centrality of the animal as an element of compositional irradiation and the identification of interspecific relationships that gain materiality in these poems. Through this research, I identify a broad and heterogeneous collection of references to animals in the author's poems - from generic allusions to uses of singular species - to which equally diverse values are attributed. The journey through João Cabral's work opens up the reader to a perception of the modalisations that animality undergoes: at first, taken from the instinctive and monstrous dimension to be combated in the conscious process of writing, to the consideration of animals as forms of life from which aesthetic and ethical knowledge about the cohabited world is learned.

This study is of a dual nature, with its first objective being to investigate traces of authorial self-representation in the works of Francis Petrarch, particularly through the poetic epistle Ad se ipsum. Conducted within the framework of comparative literary studies, the analysis incorporates not only Petrarch’s writings but also contributions from his biographers, enabling an in-depth exploration of the poet’s fixation on the theme of exile. The second objective is to offer an unpublished Portuguese translation of the aforementioned epistle, employing vernacular hexameters to emulate the rhythm of the Latin original. This translation is accompanied by commentary on the translation process, discrepancies among editions used to establish the source text, and intertextual connections between Petrarch and the sources that likely inspired hthe composition of his poetic epistle. The theoretical basis for the first part of the study relies on Delumeau (1994; 1984) and Witt (2001), who illustrate Petrarch’s role within the early Renaissance, as well as Wilkins (1961) and Dotti (2006), who contextualize him within his contemporary world. Additionally, Lejeune (2008), Karpinski (2001), and others emphasize the link between poetry and autobiography, while Kristeva (1994) broadens the concept of foreignness, enriching the interpretation of Petrarch’s authorial self-representation as a figure of someone who is an outsider. For the second part, the study is guided by Nunes (1962) in the adoption of vernacular hexameter for the translation, alongside theories by Pannwitz (1917 apud Benjamin, 2008), Schleiermacher (1977), and Venuti (2021), which advocate a translation approach that draws readers closer to the original. This research is significant as it illuminates Petrarch’s latent unbelonging, offering a deeper understanding of the poet’s inner world and literary output while providing an unprecedented Portuguese rendition of this notable poetic epistle.
