This proposal arose from the demand for reusing discarded materials at the Material and Assets Directorate (MAD) of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte(FURN) and from the need to introduce the theme of accessibility to the context of engineering education based on project-based learning (PBL) implemented in disciplines of the materials engineering course. The subject of accessibility was chosen by the students due to the difficulties in obtaining wheelchairs at the university and the motivation to create solutions for people with physical disabilities. In this sense, the objective of the project was to build a wheelchair from materials not used at the MAD/UFRN, such as hospital wheelchairs, plastic seats and metal profiles from school desks. The students received guidance in the context of PBL and carried out the following steps: i.understand the problem; ii.brainstorm to gather ideas; iii.distribute tasks and responsibilities among the components; iv.establish goals and a schedule; v.study concepts and phenomena associated with material degradation, technical design, costs, solid waste, selection and specification of materials; vi.present the partial project report; vii.disassemble and evaluate the parts of a wheelchair model; viii.reuse components through sanding and painting processes; ix. selection and attachment to the new type of seat; x.validation test of the new structure; xi.market research for wheelchairs similar to the initial unused model. The new wheelchair proposal was delivered and presented on schedule. The final cost for the reconstruction was approximately 4% of the value of a new wheelchair. The students developed skills and abilities such as problem solving, teamwork, leadership, empathy, communication, creativity, material selection, project management, costs, and solid waste. PBL proved to be an effective methodology in active engineering teaching. The initiative impacted the academic community of UFRN, especially in the context of the inclusion and accessibility secretariat (IAS), opening new possibilities for cooperation between the materials engineering course and other academic units
