Although the environmental impacts of tourism have been explored, there are few studies in tourism literature on environmental crime in the past 60 years. In this sense, this thesis aims to elucidate one central question: “What is the relationship between environmental crime and tourism?”. Both Critical Tourism and Green Criminology are used as an umbrella theoretical framework which guided the research process. The research is based on the dialectical scientific method and navigates through different research approaches and techniques. The thesis was divided into three moments; in the first moment, it is intended to understand how the Tourism and Green Criminology fields interconnect in the literature. Next, bibliographic research demonstrated that tourism research on the nexus tourismenvironment has had little critical progress over time. In addition, it reinforced that tourism from a local perspective does not need a healthy environment to happen, and critically, researchers need to think globally, perceiving that the focus should not be in sustaining tourism, but to preserve the ecological basis of the planet. Furthermore, it proposed a theoretical framework based on Green Criminology that can help researchers to critically approach environmental impacts of tourism which focus on the structures and mechanism of oppression that allow these impacts to happen. In the second moment, it attempted to identify the patterns of tourism-related environmental crimes. To do so, secondary data analysis of environmental infraction notices issued in Brazil, semi-structured interviews and a discussion of Brazilian environmental legislation and environmental law structure were conducted. The analysis was based on descriptive statistics and content analysis. The results showed that tourism-related crimes were connected to non-compliance with the environmental license for construction and operation (among other factors), especially in permanent preservation areas and indigenous territories; deforestation; irregular fishery commercialization, which relates to illegal fishing; and illegal captivity of wildlife. Lastly, the third moment tried to understand the processes involving tourism-related environmental crime. In this moment I employed the study-case technique of one of the main tourism-related environmental offenders in the state of Ceará, Vila Galé, located in Cumbuco, one of the main tourist destinations of the state. The results revealed that many of the tourism-related environmental crimes studied were State-facilitated corporate crimes. Moreover, the State, corporations, and the media try to legitimize these crimes and undermine environmental social control through discourses of economic growth. In addition, there is a power imbalance between native residents and big corporations when environmental law enforcement is put in place. Finally, the thesis demonstrated that Green Criminology could help tourism researchers to perceive that most of the so-called environmental impacts of tourism are now perceived as crimes and the main victim is Mother Earth. Also, Green Criminology gives tools to tourism researchers to approach the impacts of tourism in the environment through understanding the processes behind these crimes and exposing a whole system which sustains the relationship tourism has with the natural environment.Master Thesis Mapeamento de stakeholders nas áreas conexas de turismo e meio ambiente: um estudo em João Pessoa/PB(Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, 2011-10-17) Delgado, Anna Karenina Chaves; Alexandre, Mauro Lemuel de Oliveira; ; http://buscatextual.cnpq.br/buscatextual/visualizacv.do?id=K4706850H6; ; http://lattes.cnpq.br/8629055026932946; Costa, Benny Kramer; ; http://buscatextual.cnpq.br/buscatextual/visualizacv.do?id=K4782176P6; Araújo, Maria Valéria Pereira; ; http://lattes.cnpq.br/9227834040889428The present study aims to understand the perception in a manager perspective of the relationship between the stakeholders of tourism and environmental management in João Pessoa (PB). It is a qualitative, transversal, descriptive and exploratory research, held with keys stakeholders of tourism and environment in the capital of Paraíba. The data were collected through structured interviews and the analysis of the minutes of the municipal council of tourism, called COMTUR/ JP. The data research allowed us to affirm that the environmental stakeholders have a higher academic background than those of tourism, on the other hand the tourism stakeholders‟ have longer experience time than the environmental stakeholders‟. In general, the use of environmental resources for tourism is noticed as positively by the tourism stakeholders‟ and as intermediate for the environmental stakeholders‟, the tourism development is consider to be a non predatory active in João Pessoa, but it is very concentrate in the coastal area, the remnants of Atlantic Forest or protected areas are not used for tourism. The main environmental impacts cause by tourism according to the stakeholders interviewed (tourism and environment) were the environmental degradation of reef, beach pollution and the construction of tourism facilities in areas that should be protected, however, there was a stakeholder who believes that the tourism development in Paraíba is so nascent that it is unable to impact the environment. The performance of SETDE, PBTUR and SUDEMA was consider inconsistent by some of the interviewed stakeholders‟. The NGO representatives believe that the most important thing is a paradigm shift from the entrepreneurs and the local population. Despite the apparently close relationship between tourism and environment management in João Pessoa (PB), some actions of tourism agencies and the state government has left some unhappy important environmental stakeholders indicating that the relationship between tourism and environment in the city is becoming tenser each yearMaster Thesis Fotografia e marketing: uma análise dos atrativos turísticos da cidade de João Pessoa-PB(Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, 2011-08-12) Lôbo, Bruna Raquel Alves Maia; Alves, Maria Lúcia Bastos; ; http://lattes.cnpq.br/1719643619018288; ; http://lattes.cnpq.br/8775029359416792; Nobre, Itamar de Morais; ; http://lattes.cnpq.br/8592622988364534; Trigo Júnior, Thales Waltenior; ; http://lattes.cnpq.br/3571991852870382Photography is a resourse of the most used and effective marketing, besides being an polysemic art, boundless sense; this allows for different readings. Nevertheless, there are those who, through the control and supervision, try to organize its meaning, such as the marketing companies. Others, such as artists, are the responsibility of the observers to give their work some understanding. Resorting a photographic iconography of the tourist attractions of the city of João Pessoa in Brazil from 2005 to 2010. This survey selected images published in catalogs supported by the Fundo de Incentivo a Cultura (FIC) and the Empresa Paraibana de Turismo (PBTUR). The central idea of this qualitative research is the assumption that, in general, tourists crave, even unconsciously, a reality of a tourist attraction motivated by photographic image conveyed the travel market, meanwhile, emphasizes that the art market, the same attraction is exposed and uncovered. Thus it is argued, by photos, such as environmental and sociocultural characteristics are commodified by these organs that have different purposes is not exclusive, given that the FIC supports art and PBTUR sponsors the tourism. Beyond the iconography used for cataloging and photographic analysis, interviews were conducted by the method of visual narratives in ordes to approximate the data with the view of tourists and photographers. In that resulted in a refletion on the current imagistic process involving the release of the tourist destinations in order to be allowed on a critical reading of photographic production and market resources to marketing and promoting the art of the city. It was observed that both the art and photography marketing acquire different symbolic values with respect to their markets promoted by the catalogs analyzed.Master Thesis Turismo e economia solidária : uma análise nas cooperativas e associações de artesanato do Roteiro Seridó norte-rio-grandense(Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, 2011-10-10) Medeiros, Viviane Costa Fonseca de Almeida; Alves, Maria Lúcia Bastos; ; http://lattes.cnpq.br/1719643619018288; ; http://lattes.cnpq.br/4236100618422414; Azevedo, Francisco Fransualdo de; ; http://lattes.cnpq.br/2719998085102847; Silva, Paulo Roberto Palhano; ; http://lattes.cnpq.br/0668404365830780The present study has addressed the issues surrounding the Solidarity Economy and Tourism, their perspectives and contributions to the development process of local communities, as well as the connection point between the two. This study evaluated the extent to which social economy through cooperatives and associations in tourism has generated socio-economic improvements for the artisans of the tourist Seridó. The study made as to their objectives, was exploratory and descriptive, since it involved both standard techniques of data collection, questionnaires and systematic observation, and secondary research and case studies, which characterizes an exploratory research, according to Castro (2008 ). The results indicate significant improvements offered by the inclusion of members in groups (associations and cooperatives) in matters concerning health, education, interpersonal relationships, and access to consumer credit to the artisans. Through this study, one might also note that the inclusion of products and services in tourism is not a relevant factor for the socio-economic improvements observed for the elevated presence of middlemen in the marketing processMaster Thesis Turismo, território e políticas públicas: uma análise do destino João Pessoa/PB(Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, 2011-10-27) Sousa, Petrônio Maciel de; Fonseca, Maria Aparecida Pontes da; ; http://buscatextual.cnpq.br/buscatextual/visualizacv.do?id=K4785359J5; ; http://lattes.cnpq.br/4480219603556962; Alonso, Sérgio Fernandes; ; http://lattes.cnpq.br/1429071592091088; Enders, Wayne Thomas; ; http://buscatextual.cnpq.br/buscatextual/visualizacv.do?id=K4781298A5&dataRevisao=nullThis study presents an approach to tourism activity from the perspective of the territory, analyzing the importance of the roles of the State and public policies for tourism development. Tourism in the northeastern region of Brazil begins to take its rise from the late 1970 through public policies, whose goal was to provide the necessary conditions for tourism development. The tourism public policies were the key elements in the production process of tourist territories in the region. In the state of Paraíba, the public authorities elected the coastline as the main attraction and the state capital, João Pessoa, as the locus for the tourism development, with the city receiving a series of public policies. In this context, this research aims to analyze the development process of three specific public policies for tourism development in João Pessoa: The (mega)Projeto Costa do Sol (1988), the PRODETUR/PB I and II (1997 e 2005) and the Plano Estratégico de Desenvolvimento do Turismo na Paraíba, the Plano Amanhecer (2000). This study was guided by the question that even having been contemplated by the tourism public policies, João Pessoa still remains in a peripheral position in the regional tourism market. The methodological procedures for this study were literature and documents research and semi-structured interviews with tourism public officials and representatives from local tourism trade. The research came to prove that the discontinuity between governmental administrations hampered the implementation process of the tourism public policies studied. It was observed that the implementation of tourism public policies in the long term depends on the interaction between governments, as well as the collective political will to develop tourism in Joao PessoaMaster Thesis Segregação socioespacial e turismo: estudo da representação fílmica criada pelos turistas e residentes sobre Natal Rio Grande do Norte(Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, 2011-06-09) Silva, Michel Jairo Vieira da; Fortes, Lore; ; http://lattes.cnpq.br/4596655243422487; ; http://lattes.cnpq.br/9014294331694342; Alexandre, Mauro Lemuel de Oliveira; ; http://buscatextual.cnpq.br/buscatextual/visualizacv.do?id=K4706850H6; Coriolano, Luzia Neide Menezes Teixeira; ; http://lattes.cnpq.br/4477795642535596This study emerges and develops, from a note by Italo Calvino, who in his novel Invisible Cities advised to avoid saying "that sometimes different cities follow on the same site and with the same name, born and die without knowing, without communication among itself ". The research with a transdisciplinary work ( using elements of sociology, anthropology, geography and communication) made a reflection about segregation and tourism: poverty-richness, center-periphery, tradition- spectaclezation , the visitor-visited maping the touristic circuit and discussing about the phenomenon on the real city and touristic place: Natal and the "Sun City" - Rio Grande do Norte, studying videos produced by residents (documentary) and tourists ( posted on the Internet). Doing a comparative analysis between the realities of these two subjects (resident and tourist), the research found few similarities, many differences on the urban experience, with the existence of two distinct realities (tourist region X the periphery region). Based on theory of phenomenology, social representation, and using content analysis of film, it was noted that promotes to the visitor a trip segmented and disintegrated to daily life, culture and contact with the resident. Resident that, in largely part, lives in a unattended area, with no prospect of life (represented by Novo Horizonte Community). The confinement and segregation occurs even in his moments of leisure and cultural expressions (represented by Redinha‟s Beach), because the private an public leisure areas of tourism indirectly prevent access by people who can not contribute to the consumption on this places. This papper concluded that the tourism in Natal is an activity-phenomenon that directs and focuses on public investments for infrastructure tourist region (Ponta Negra Beach), in detriment of the poorest and periphery areas of the cityMaster Thesis Perfis estratégicos e percepção da qualidade: um estudo nos restaurantes da rota turística de Natal-RN(Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, 2012-05-28) Ferreira, Jefferson Cavalcante; Alexandre, Mauro Lemuel de Oliveira; ; http://buscatextual.cnpq.br/buscatextual/visualizacv.do?id=K4706850H6; ; http://lattes.cnpq.br/1681464176031828; Medeiros, Carlos Alberto Freire; ; http://buscatextual.cnpq.br/buscatextual/visualizacv.do?id=K4799499A7; Ferreira, Lissa Valeria Fernandes; ; Lucena Filho, Severino Alves de; ; http://buscatextual.cnpq.br/buscatextual/visualizacv.do?id=K4770951U5This work is a study of strategic management of catering establishments in the tourist route from Natal, through the study of the strategic profile of the manager and the level of satisfaction with the quality of services offered. Identifies the strategic profile prevalent in the studied sector, measures the level of customer satisfaction with services and associate the two constructs to distinguish the services of strategic profile. Uses population of 33 restaurants, built for convenience, from a list composed establishments associated with the Brazilian Association of Bars and Restaurants - ABRASEL, Veja magazine Christmas food and drink 2011/2012 and information from the natives. It presents statistical methodology used for descriptive bivariate analysis complemented by quantitative data. The quantitative characteristics of the population shows non-normality checked by the Shapiro-Wilks. Used the Kruskal-Wallis test for the realization of the association of variables and the Mann-Whitney test to perform post-test. It shows the strategic profile prevalent in the sector of restoration in Natal is the analyzer, although other types were detected. Notes that the level of satisfaction with the quality of service is getting a high score approximately 5 points in a 6-point Likert scale. Demonstrates that the client can tell the quality of services between the different strategic profiles. Identifies distinction between services provided by prospector profile compared to other profiles, indicating the size as the tangible aspects that presents noticeable difference. Certifies that these variables affect the environment of the restaurant in the building of strategic profile and reflect on the service provided. Tourist activity was addressed as socio-cultural phenomenon, considering the case of (dis) (re) territorialization and power relations between staff producers of the tourism space. Given the complexity of this issue and the need for further studies that focus on the reterritorialization cases generated by tourism in the northeastern coast, given the action of the agents involved in the construction of the spaces generated by tourism, this work is then justified. For such a study an exploratory and qualitative study was conducted, through a survey of secondary and primary data, and interviews with leaders of public, private nonprofit community in the investigated county. In this sense, it was found that the process of (dis) (re) territorialization in the city investigated, permeates the contradictions resulting from the conflicts existing power while providing the location and implications for economic and sociocultural dimensions, its heart is found in the political, the relationship between entrepreneurship - established mainly by outsiders who own businesses in Pipa - and local government - composed entirely by insiders who work in the municipal headquarters, that until then, hold the political and the economic power. Thus, to understand the regionalization of tourism it is necessary to analyze its economic, socio-cultural and political dimensions, referring to the complexity of relationships between producing space agents. It is believed that the reterritorialization can be capable of producing territorialities contextualized to the culture, history, economy and local politics, understanding that the active participation of the natives will contribute to a less perverse, since this has been one of the faces experienced by local peopleMaster Thesis Políticas públicas e as transformações socioespaciais correlacionadas ao turismo no município de Caicó: uma análise do período 2000 a 2010(Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, 2010-12-17) Alves, Josemery Araújo; Azevedo, Francisco Fransualdo de; ; http://lattes.cnpq.br/2719998085102847; ; http://lattes.cnpq.br/8242612872391867; Ferreira, Lissa Valeria Fernandes; ; Gomes, Marcos Antônio Silvestre; The study presents an approach on planning, sociospatial transformations and public touristic policies implemented between 2000 and 2010 in Caicó, encompassing people from the government, private sector and the population of the municipality and informal traders who use the leisure facilities and services arranged in place. As the main goal, the research intends to analyze the performance of public and private sectors correlated to the touristic activity in Caicó city and their reflections in the process changes sociospatial. The dissertation is structured in order to carry out an investigation into the role of public policies to the development of a location with touristic potential, in this case, the municipality of Caicó; to investigate public policies implemented in the touristic industry of Rio Grande do Norte, particularly the actions of PRODETUR-Nordeste focused on the development of the tourism in the countryside, affecting particularly the region of Seridó region and the municipality of Caicó, and, finally, to check the main changes sociospatial verified in Caicó between 2000 and 2010. Cultural issues and certain natural beauties can be seen as attractions that can attract tourist demand, taking into consideration the awakening increasingly more evident quest by the tourist for knowledge of the peculiarities of the region. Several authors have worked in this view, pointing to the cultural aspects of the region as elements that are able to boost the touristic activity. The questions raised in this study was based on a literature, based mainly on authors like Beni, Dias, Cruz, Azevedo and Morais. To obtain the necessary data in the analysis, the methodological procedures used in intensive direct observation, using interviews, applied together with the public representatives who are acting as leaders of the political actions related to tourism in the municipality and members of the private sector related to tourism services such as lodging establishments, food and travel agency and, finally, the local people and informal traders benefited directly or indirectly, with the touristic resources and structure. These research agents were investigated by means of structured forms such as support for analysis. Was detected in the survey that the leisure facilities and services installed in the last decade in the city of Caico has a priority the population of the municipality, is necessary to emphasize that the residents interviewed perceive the importance of these tools for tourist activity. It was also found that the public sector is the main responsible for the observed changes. Therefore, proved to be relevant to study the role public private sector partnerships and population influences, considering that this analysis may contribute to the work of researchers, public administrators and businessmen, may serve as a norteador for planning and development of tourism in the city of Caico
