Master Thesis Nation branding e posicionamento turístico internacional da marca-país Brasil(2026-02-11) Silva, Mirelle Pereira da; Ferreira, Lissa Valéria Fernandes; http://lattes.cnpq.br/8015374156967844; https://orcid.org/0009-0003-6377-6279; http://lattes.cnpq.br/9108672649096672; Alexandre, Mauro Lemuel de Oliveira; http://lattes.cnpq.br/7233203993967359; Silva, Elaine Aparecida Lopes da; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-5185-2348; http://lattes.cnpq.br/2012157286077949In the contemporary global scenario, competition between countries to attract tourists, investments, and international recognition has intensified, driving the adoption of strategies focused on managing national image and reputation. In this context, nation branding is consolidating itself as a relevant concept in the field of international relations, especially in the areas of public diplomacy and tourism. This study aimed to analyze the perception and actions of Brazilian diplomatic representatives in projecting the image and positioning of the country brand as a competitive tourist destination abroad. Methodologically, the research adopted a qualitative approach, of an exploratory and descriptive nature, based on a literature review and semi-structured interviews with seven Brazilian diplomatic actors. The empirical data were analyzed using Content Analysis, according to the method proposed by Bardin. The research outlined, through eleven analytical categories, the performance of Brazilian nation branding through national public diplomacy. The results showed that the study of the geopolitics of tourism faces some resistance, where the perception of tourism as an "instrument" is more widely accepted than the perception of it as a "thriving attribute" in contemporary Brazilian international relations. Furthermore, diplomatic action in nation branding proved to be predominantly indirect and conditioned by internal structural factors, ranging from governance, institutional coordination, and continuity of public policies between governments, to issues related to public security, budget, air connectivity, and infrastructure. The relevance of nation branding for national tourism was also noted, although contingent on the resolution of these structural factors. It was concluded that the "Brazil" country brand is undoubtedly a vast territory of untapped potential, but it is primarily subject to the success of internal policies. Strengthening the "Brazil" tourism brand depends on multiple and coordinated efforts through the integration of all actors involved in building Brazil's image abroad.Master Thesis Percepções sobre a qualidade do curso técnico de guia de turismo do IFRN (2008-2012)(2013-12-20) Lod, Messalina Karoline Oliveira; Nóbrega, Wilker Ricardo de Mendonça; Leal, Sérgio Rodrigues; http://lattes.cnpq.br/9559630444113123; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-1628-3493; http://lattes.cnpq.br/0025142529544906; http://lattes.cnpq.br/2294472380181289; Almeida, Juliana Vieira de; http://lattes.cnpq.br/9272504166025931; Wanderley Netto, Eduardo Bráulio; http://lattes.cnpq.br/1388009053895818Scientific research in tourism still presents gaps regarding studies on technical vocational education, particularly those focused on the training of professionals directly engaged in the tourism sector. In this context, this dissertation aimed to analyze the perceptions of teachers, graduates, and employers concerning the quality of the Technical Course in Tourist Guiding offered by the Federal Institute of Rio Grande do Norte (IFRN) between 2008 and 2012. The study sought to identify positive and negative aspects of the training provided, characterize the socioeconomic profile of the participants, and propose recommendations for course improvement. This is a descriptive-exploratory study with a qualitative and quantitative approach, developed through bibliographic, documentary, and field research. Data were collected through questionnaires applied to the different research subjects, and the analytical categories were constructed based on the theoretical framework adopted and on principles of the TEDQUAL certification system proposed by the World Tourism Organization. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and content analysis. The results indicate that the course is recognized for the quality of its theoretical training, the academic qualifications and commitment of the teaching staff, and the institutional structure of IFRN. However, weaknesses were identified regarding the limited availability of practical activities, insufficient integration with the labor market, and challenges related to foreign language proficiency, which are considered essential for professional insertion. Additionally, low graduate retention in the tourism sector was observed. It is concluded that, despite an overall positive evaluation, the course needs to strengthen the integration between training and the labor market to enhance its social and professional effectiveness.Master Thesis Identidade gastronômica potiguar como valor cultural e atrativo turístico: o Rio Grande do Norte como lugar singular(Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, 2026-02-11) Pereira, Iury Bezerra; Oliveira, Almir Félix Batista de; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-8570-9179; http://lattes.cnpq.br/6348825553522569; https://orcid.org/0009-0007-6224-216X; http://lattes.cnpq.br/8029248667740810; Dantas, Andrea Virginia Sousa; http://lattes.cnpq.br/4555976978556449; Alves, Josemery Araújo; https://orcid.org/0000-0001-9852-1442; http://lattes.cnpq.br/8242612872391867; Salazar, Viviane Santos; http://lattes.cnpq.br/0331772105868515Combining gastronomy with tourism has been a common practice in various destinations, aiming to promote economic growth and strengthen local identities, in which these gastronomic identities evoke a sense of belonging for residents of the destinations and offer unique experiences for visitors. Based on this perception and the guiding question (How is the gastronomic identity of Rio Grande do Norte characterized in terms of its constituent elements?), this research seeks to analyze the gastronomic identity of Rio Grande do Norte based on the relationship between documents that discuss food in Rio Grande do Norte, professionals in the state's gastronomic sector, and tourist restaurants. The overall objective of the work focuses on understanding the construction of the gastronomic identity of Rio Grande do Norte alongside the influence of tourism. To achieve this goal, the following specific objectives were defined: to identify the main dishes or gastronomic elements of Rio Grande do Norte; to identify the perception of local professionals in the gastronomic field regarding the eating habits of the people of Rio Grande do Norte in the formation of the local gastronomic identity; to examine the menus of tourist restaurants in terms of their connection with the gastronomy of Rio Grande do Norte and the influences of the tourism market. The work is guided by a qualitative-quantitative approach, with the intention of not only quantifying general data, but also directing the results from a cultural and identity perspective with regard to literature, professionals, and local food services. The research is based in the state of Rio Grande do Norte—more specifically, 15 cities selected based on the new map of tourist hubs in the state. In this sense, data triangulation was performed between a content analysis (categorical theme) using Iramuteq software and supported by a semi-structured interview with gastronomy professionals in RN, descriptive and quantitative analysis of restaurant menus in the selected cities available on the TripAdvisor website, as well as a qualitative descriptive analysis based on articles, theses, dissertations, IPHAN, INPI, and the Official Gazette of RN. The results indicate that Rio Grande do Norte has a rich gastronomic heritage, similar to that of neighboring states and others in the Northeast region, and is moving towards greater recognition of local traditions. However, when combined with tourism, Potiguar cuisine fails to promote its delicacies by not working on this identity in the imagination of tourists—both those who intend to visit and those who have already visited. The data shows the need for public authorities and competent bodies to work on promoting the destination, focusing on gastronomic tourism in addition to sun and sea.Doctoral Thesis Modelo de mensuração da hospitalidade inteligente de um destino turístico(Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, 2025-09-25) Cesário, Marília Ferreira Paes; Araújo, Maria Valéria Pereira de; Ferreira, Lissa Valéria Fernandes; Vanzella, Elídio; Matias, Esdras Matheus Silva; Almeida, Juliana Vieira deAlthough tourism has grown rapidly since World War II, diverse factors of varying magnitude have influenced how it is conceived, planned, and managed in localities. Increased and improved access to and use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) have necessitated that a location's product and service offerings be prepared to welcome this new consumer profile, through more thoughtful and structured hospitality designed to enhance the visitor experience. Therefore, some cities have undergone transformations related to new technologies, giving rise to concepts such as Smart Cities, Responsive Cities, and Smart Tourist Destinations. It is believed that these new technologies can be used to generate a more efficient and personalised welcome through so-called Smart Hospitality, providing a positive experience for tourists through information resources and technological infrastructure to facilitate their arrival and stay. However, it is also necessary to consider the humanisation of these technologies in the city, which is the idea of a human-centred smart city. This is crucial for ensuring that technological development is a tool, not the only means, and that it's for all citizens, whether residents or visitors. Based on this, this study proposes a model for measuring Smart Hospitality for a tourist destination based on a system of indicators linked to management and infrastructure. As a methodological approach, we presented the research in a multipaper format—multiple articles, each providing important insights for developing the final model. The research was exploratory and descriptive, using a survey-type questionnaire with hospitality and tourism technology experts. From there, the data were processed quantitatively and qualitatively, and content analysis and descriptive statistics were used to support the analysis, using Excel software. The results were achieved through systematic literature reviews, bibliographic and documentary reviews, and field research, which provided the knowledge needed to create and format the final model proposed for measuring the locality's Smart Hospitality level. The model presented in this research is expected to contribute to city management, providing essential information for strategically welcoming visitors. This improves the competitiveness of tourist destinations by understanding the locality's Smart Hospitality level and collecting data generated by visitors and residents. This data can help inform the best strategy and how local management can use this information to improve the welcome offered to visitors and residents, leveraging technology to obtain more and better information about the profiles of these tourists.Doctoral Thesis Educação inclusiva para o turismo: uma análise da formação profissional nos cursos do eixo turismo, hospitalidade e lazer do Instituto Federal de Educação, Ciência e Tecnologia do Maranhão(Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, 2025-09-18) Chaves, Janete Rodrigues de Vasconcelos; Araújo, Maria Valéria Pereira de; Alves, Josemery Araújo; https://orcid.org/0000-0001-9852-1442; http://lattes.cnpq.br/8242612872391867; https://orcid.org/0000-0001-6302-1173; http://lattes.cnpq.br/9227834040889428; http://lattes.cnpq.br/3321834179879003; Brito, Max Leandro de Araújo; https://orcid.org/0000-0003-2827-9886; http://lattes.cnpq.br/8629663810773172; Matias, Esdras Matheus Silva; Almeida, Juliana Vieira deThis research addresses the theme of inclusive education for tourism and has as its general objective "To understand the professional training and the inclusion process of students with specific educational needs in the courses of the Tourism, Hospitality and Leisure (THL) Axis of the Instituto Federal do Maranhão Campus São Luís Centro Histórico, considering institutional guidelines and pedagogical practices". The themes addressed are based on the connection between the universal right to inclusive education and the importance of accessible tourism. Regarding education, which has recently incorporated the principles of inclusion and accessibility, it is configured as a movement of a social nature that seeks to guarantee access to school and the right to quality referenced education. It is recognized that tourism, as an educational and sociocultural practice, needs to adapt and adopt inclusive principles that ensure the full participation of people with disabilities in tourist activities. The study reveals how legislation and policies can delineate and ensure strategies and guarantees so that students with specific educational needs can develop their potential, exercise their citizenship and actively participate in society. Dealing with inclusive education in tourism is seeking guarantees so that tourist destinations are able to contemplate human diversity in cultural mediation with qualified professionals, in the tourist structure and in the promotion of meaningful experiences for all visitors. The study, with a qualitative and descriptive approach, used bibliographic and field research as procedures in the methodology through content analysis with an emphasis on three professional technical courses in the Tourism, Hospitality and Leisure Axis: Integrated Events; Subsequent Tourism Guide; and Accommodation Education for Young People and Adults (EJA). The methodological process included the survey and documentary analysis, contemplating the National Curricular Guidelines, the Institutional Development Plan and the Course Pedagogical Projects, in addition to the institutional regulations on inclusion at IFMA. In the field research, electronic forms and semi-structured interviews were used to capture experiences and perceptions in the investigated context. The delimitation of the target audience was made considering the direct link to the theme, servers, teachers, NEE support technicians, pedagogues and students with disabilities, totaling 21 interviewees. From the documentary evidence and the field research data, the study indicates a consonance between the current legal provisions and the institutional documents, revealing normative alignment and coherence in the guidelines that guide educational practice. Regarding the teaching and learning processes, it is observed that IFMA servers generally demonstrate little training in the area of inclusion, little engagement to undertake specific active methodologies and the fragility of the school in structuring and basing a more consistent approach to integrate social inclusion in the educational system. As for the students, it is perceived that they understand the need to promote continuing education and pedagogical support to servers for more inclusive care and the demand for improvement of educational technological support for the development of skills. The research showed that gaps still persist in educational inclusion in the courses of the Technological, Humanistic and Linguistic (THL) axis of IFMA, especially with regard to the need to prepare teachers to work with inclusive education in order to effectively contribute to the critical, qualified and socially committed professional training of students in the face of the demands of the world of work.Doctoral Thesis Economia compartilhada e plataformas de aluguel de hospedagem: análise das implicações do modelo no bem-estar social(Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, 2025-09-16) Fernandes, Fernanda Calumby; Barreto, Leilianne Michelle Trindade da Silva; Medeiros, Carlos Alberto Freire; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-3830-1162; http://lattes.cnpq.br/9398091583694583; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-1341-8604; http://lattes.cnpq.br/2679486695792235; http://lattes.cnpq.br/1158549485372422; Cavalcanti, Bruno César Correia Tenório; Ferreira, Lissa Valéria Fernandes; http://lattes.cnpq.br/8015374156967844; Falcão, Mariana Cavalcanti; https://orcid.org/0000-0001-7672-0627; http://lattes.cnpq.br/5696319836452287; Alexandre, Mauro Lemuel de Oliveira; http://lattes.cnpq.br/7233203993967359New ways of consumption have emerged through contemporary economic models, among which the sharing economy stands out. Within the hospitality sector, Short-Term Rental Platforms (STRPs) have gained prominence by catering to the expectations of the contemporary tourist. Characterized by strong reliance on technology, these travelers seek authentic experiences, often aspiring to live like a resident of the destination they visit. Although academic research has extensively explored the impacts of tourism activity, there remains a notable gap in studies addressing the specific implications of STRPs. These implications range from the absence of tailored regulatory frameworks to broader challenges affecting social wellbeing. As STRPs continue to expand worldwide, such challenges have become increasingly universal, reinforcing the need for systematic analysis of this dynamic. This study addresses the following research question: What are the implications of STRPs for social well-being, and what community-based mediating solutions can be proposed to address them? To respond, the overarching objective was defined as analyzing the impacts of STRPs, as an expression of the sharing economy, on social well-being. The study also sought to generate data that could inform critical reflections on these platforms in the urban tourism context and enrich theoretical debates in the field of tourism studies. Three specific objectives guided the research: (i) to identify the impacts generated by STRPs as part of the sharing economy; (ii) to examine which aspects of social well-being are affected by user behaviors, based on the perceptions of the local community; and (iii) to propose, as an academic contribution, community-driven mediating solutions that may mitigate the challenges identified, thereby advancing discussions on sustainable tourism theory. Methodologically, this qualitative investigation unfolded in three stages: a comprehensive literature review; the use of focus groups with key stakeholders— Professional Property Managers, Hosts, and Non-Host Community Members; and the development of a Mediating Matrix. Data analysis was conducted with theoretical support, providing fresh insights into the study of sustainable tourism. The findings reveal that the impacts of STRP activity in Brazilian cities largely mirror those observed internationally, with stronger emphasis on behavioral dimensions. These impacts can be grouped into three main categories: education and safety, sustainability, and regulation. Such categories informed the design of the Mediating Matrix, which represents one of the main contributions of this research. The study concludes by underscoring the relevance of this topic for academic inquiry and its potential to guide both society and policymakers in addressing the challenges posed by STRPs. Finally, it calls for further research to confirm these findings and explore new perspectives on this emerging form of accommodation.Master Thesis Turismo de Base Comunitária em áreas urbanas: limites e possibilidades para o Bairro de Mãe Luiza - Natal/RN(Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, 2025-10-30) Bezerril, Alysson Lucas de Oliveira; Bridi, Guilherme; Silva, Michel Jairo Vieira Araújo da; http://lattes.cnpq.br/1626859396401842; http://lattes.cnpq.br/2296016415738918; Oliveira, Almir Felix Batista de; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-8570-9179; http://lattes.cnpq.br/6348825553522569; Virginio, Darlyne Fontes; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-3131-4067; http://lattes.cnpq.br/0941157792282201; Barreto, Leilianne Michelle Trindade da Silva; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-1341-8604; http://lattes.cnpq.br/2679486695792235In recent years, there has been an increase in discussions about Community-Based Tourism (CBT) as a form of local development and a factor for social and economic growth. The alternative model of tourist activity is commonly observed in its practice and dissemination in rural contexts, but as a rule, it is understood that there is a perspective of framing TBC in contexts of urban areas that are socioeconomically disadvantaged, unequal and are on the margins of the process. of tourism. From this perspective, Community-Based Tourism in Urban Areas (TBCAU) is explored, which will potentially address a poor, disadvantaged and marginalized context. Furthermore, dealing with TBC requires discussing, reinforcing and following the premises and principles designated by the Ministry of Tourism in Brazil (MTUR). From this, the objective of the research is to analyze the limits and possibilities for community-based tourism in urban areas (TBCAU) in Mãe Luiza Neighborhood (Natal/RN), focusing on the premises proposed by MTUR. As soon as it becomes important to look into this topic as little is explored and academically problematizes TBC in city limits, and due to the current scenario of reach and visibility of community-based tourism. The methodology used is based on qualitative research and has an exploratory and descriptive nature, carrying out empirical research that includes bibliographical analysis, focus group meetings, documentary research and direct observation in its data collection. The results regarding the limits and possibilities of CBT in marginalized and socioeconomically disadvantaged urban areas can highlight the scope or distance from the premises proposed by the Ministry of Tourism (MTUR). Mãe Luiza, the locus of this research, demonstrates a neighborhood that approaches the premises despite several challenges. However, it is understood that achieving all the premises in their entirety would be difficult. Finally, the aim is also to develop strategies that can provide support for the appropriation of tourism by the neighborhood. Furthermore, this study emphasizes the responsible way of practicing tourism, and enables the community development of the locality.Doctoral Thesis "Santo de casa faz milagre?" - a construção de monumentos católicos como atrativos turísticos nos municípios de Crato (CE) e Barbalha (CE)(Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, 2025-09-26) Albuquerque, Mariene Cavalcante Borba de; Alves, Maria Lúcia Bastos; Oliveira, Almir Felix Batista de; Alves, Josemery Araújo; Oliveira, Christian Dennys Monteiro de; Cordeiro, Maria Paula JacintoThis thesis aims to analyze the articulation between the public, private, and ecclesial sectors in the governance of Catholic monuments, considered as religious tourism attractions, in the municipalities of Crato (CE) and Barbalha (CE), Brazil. The empirical field of the research encompasses the monuments of Our Lady of Fátima and Saint Anthony, erected in the Cariri region of Ceará, which is strongly influenced by Juazeiro do Norte, one of the main centers of religious tourism in Northeastern Brazil. This is a qualitative multiple-case study that examines the construction of religious monuments in different destinations. The choice of contiguous municipalities made it possible to observe how governance actions, whether divergent or convergent, undertaken by similar groups of social actors within the same context, influence in different ways the establishment of religious tourist attractions, resulting in distinct dynamics and outcomes. The study covers the period from 2014 to 2024, considering the inauguration of the first monument and the year of completion of the investigation. The data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis, drawing on materials obtained through documentary and bibliographic research, semi-structured interviews, photographic records, and participant observation, which resulted in a field diary. The results indicate that the consolidation of religious tourist attractions, whether strongly rooted in the local context or even when not endogenous, depends on the incorporation of ritual and symbolic practices that confer meaning and authenticity to the space, in addition to adequate infrastructure. The findings reveal that religious monuments hold potential for tourist legitimation, provided they are supported by distinctive identity attributes. It is concluded that governance constitutes a decisive factor for the effectiveness of tourism activity, with the absence of articulation and the exclusive dependence on public management actions standing as barriers to its development. This highlights the need for a collaborative governance model within a process of horizontal articulation among the multiple social actors involved.Doctoral Thesis Por um mundo melhor: sustentabilidade no palco do Rock in Rio(Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, 2025-10-02) França, Karen Daniele Lira de; Araújo, Maria Valéria Pereira de; Alves, Josemery Araújo; Marques Júnior, Sérgio; Matias, Esdras Matheus Silva; Chagas, Marcio Marreiro dasIn a global context of increasing environmental awareness, music festivals have endeavored to align with the sustainability paradigm. To communicate their sustainable initiatives effectively, these events can leverage Signaling Theory, which posits that organizations can mitigate information asymmetry by issuing visible and credible signals regarding their internal practices. In this context, the Rock in Rio music festival is notable for its sustainability plan, which is anchored in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This festival serves as the central focus of the current research, which examines the intersection of music festivals, sustainability, and Signaling Theory. Presented in a multipaper format, this study investigates how both Rock in Rio and its sponsoring brands communicate their dedication to sustainability and the subsequent impact of this communication on public trust. The first chapter involved a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) to determine how sustainability is addressed in music festivals. The research employed the TCCM methodology, which assesses the Theory, Context, Characteristics, and Methods of the analyzed articles. The findings highlighted a significant theoretical gap, as most studies lacked an explicit theoretical foundation and predominantly focused on Europe, with limited research from Brazil. The second chapter centered on an SLR to examine the application of Signaling Theory within tourism research. The analysis indicated that while the theory is extensively used to study the communication of quality and reliability across various tourism sectors, its application in event management remains limited. In the third chapter, a qualitative study was conducted to analyze the sustainability-related content posted on Instagram by Rock in Rio and its sponsoring brands, Natura and Heineken. The content analysis revealed that both the festival and the brands effectively use Signaling Theory through visible actions and marketing campaigns. Their communication narratives are segmented into distinct themes: environmental preservation (Natura), technological innovation (Heineken), and urban and social sustainability (Rock in Rio). However, the analysis also highlighted a lack of consistent communication in the post-event period. The fourth chapter involved a quantitative survey with 251 participants from Rock in Rio 2024 to analyze the public's perception of trust. Using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM), the study’s final model confirmed that green advertising, brand identity, and educational experience directly influence sustainable trust. Conversely, brand quality and the experiential dimensions of entertainment, aesthetics, and escapism were found to be insufficient in generating this type of trust. It was concluded that festival participants provided positive feedback on the brands' sustainability initiatives, confirming that trust is established through effective communication signals. Suggestions for future research include conducting comparative and longitudinal studies to analyze the evolution of sustainability strategies across different contexts and over time.Doctoral Thesis Percepções da cultura e identidade de Aveiro: as identidades da cidade(Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, 2025-10-10) Campos, Daniel Cavalcanti Fernandes; Silva, Ricardo Lanzarini Gomes; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7559-8161; http://lattes.cnpq.br/7112810714641245; Serondio, João Antonio de Almeida; Rodrigues, Carlos José de Oliveira e Silva; Silva, Ana Clara de Sousa Birrento Matos; Sindoncha, Idalina Proença Maia; Almeida, Giovana Goretti Feijó de; Marcotulio, Leonardo LennertzThis thesis examines the intersection between the individual and the city, highlighting how personal, subjective, and collective experiences shape urban cultural identity. In a globalized context where notions of space and time become fluid, cultural identities interconnect, creating a diverse mosaic. The research investigates the influence of factors such as class, race, ethnicity, and gender on urban experiences, emphasizing the significance of Cultural Studies in understanding these dynamics. Cities are presented as centers of cultural production, where everyday practices and artistic expressions converge to form hybrid identities, underscoring the need for multidisciplinary approaches to analyze the complexities of contemporary urban life.
