Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed of individuals aged 65 years and above (n=1,440), resident in the health region of Barcelona and in Brazil. Two surveys and exams relating to the oral health status of institutionalized elderly persons in Brazil (in 2008) and in Barcelona, Spain (in 2009) were carried out. Periodontal disease, tooth loss and dental caries were analyzed, considering age and cognitive ability. The sample was stratified by gender and country. Bivariate and multivariate Robust Poisson Regression models were used to obtain adjusted Prevalence Ratios (aPR), and a 95% confidence interval (95%CI) was employed. Results: In Barcelona, men and women had a higher prevalence of periodontal illness: Men - calculus (aPR:1.5; CI:1.08-2.19) and pocket (aPR:2.05; CI:1.43-2.93) results. Women - calculus (aPR:2.4; CI:1.77-3.24) and pocket (aPR:3.2; CI:2.29-4.53) results. In Barcelona there was a lower prevalence of edentulism (aPR:0.49; CI:0.37-0.65) and functional edentulism (aPR:0.49; CI:0.40-0.60) among men. The same results were found among women with a lower prevalence of edentulism (aPR:0.49; CI: 0.41-0.58) and functional edentulism (aPR:0.42; CI: 0.30-0.49). Conclusions: A poor state of oral health of men and women was observed in both countries, with the elderly from Barcelona having worse periodontal health and the elderly from Brazil having greater tooth lossArticle Atenção primária à saúde e os idosos institucionalizados: a perspectiva da gestão municipal no Brasil(Elsevier, 2016) Piuvezam, Grasiela; Lima, Kenio Costa de; Carvalho, Monise Santos de; Xavier, Vítor Guerra Pereira; Silva, Rafael Alves da; Dantas, Aline Rochelle Filgueira; Nunes, Vilani Medeiros de Araújo; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-2343-7251Health actions in primary care are essential to ensure the quality of care. The objective was to identify the actions undertaken in primary care, targeted to institutionalized elderly in Brazil, from the perspective o fmunicipal managers. It is a qualitative, observational and analytical study. Semi-structured interviews with 28 managers of 11municipalities in the five geographical regions were conducted. The collected data were processed by ALCESTE software (4.9). Results demonstrate that the actions directed to the institutionalized elderly were scarce. Regarding the elderly in general the actions symbolize fragmented and distant attention advocated by the Public Health Policy for the ElderlyArticle Prevalence and factors associated with alterations of the temporomandibular joint in institutionalized elderly(Ciência & Saúde Coletiva, 2019) Piuvezam, Grasiela; Medeiros, Annie Karoline Bezerra de; Barbosa, Fernanda Pinheiro; Carreiro, Adriana da Fonte Porto; Lima, Kenio Costa; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-2343-7251This article aims to analyze the prevalence and associated factors of TMJ alterations in elderly institutionalized. An cross-sectional study of 1192 elderly institutionalized in Brazil was undertaken. Intra and extra-oral exams were performed and the TMJ was evaluated based on the Oral Health Assessment Form of the WHO (1997). Demographic data and elderly dependence were also collected. The self-perception of the elderly regarding oral health was measured using the Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index - GOHAI. Data analysis was performed using the Chi-squared test and robust Poisson regression (level of significance of 5%). The prevalence of TMJ alteration was low compared to adults and was only associated with the state of dependence of the elderly individual (independent had 45.4% more alterations than dependent individuals), gender (women had 47.4% more alterations), self-perception of oral health (who evaluated negatively had 65.6% more alterations) and the need of upper dentures (who needed some kind of upper dentures had 45.8% more alterations than those who did not). Despite being low, the presence of alterations in the TMJ was more frequent in elderly independent, women, who evaluated negatively oral health and need some kind of upper denturesArticle Eficácia de um programa de educação em saúde para escolares(Research, Society And Development, 2022) Piuvezam, Grasiela; Lima, Jonatas Pereira de; Lima, Caliandra Maria Bezerra Luna; Azevedo, Kesley Pablo Moraes de; Bezerra, Isaac Newton Machado; Camarotti, Maria de Fátima; Ferreira, Maria Ângela Fernandes; Martinez, Daniel Guillén; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-2343-7251Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of a health education program in schoolchildren aimed at preventing helminth diseases from the perspective of the acquisition of knowledge and skills that favored changes and improvements in quality of life. Method: This is research with epidemiological design of intervention of the type prophylactic clinical trial. Results: The study was conducted in a public school in the city of João Pessoa / Paraíba and included in the data collection adolescents aged 10 to 14 years, enrolled in the 6th and 7th grade of Elementary School II. The results indicate that after performing a health education intervention, the number of correct answers related to the transmission of diseases was: Ascariasis (86.7%) and Hookworm (87.4%). One year after the educational intervention, the results remained positive for Ascariasis and Hookworm (74.1%) with statistical significance. The use of several active methodologies in communication with the target audience was significant to capture attention and build interaction spaces to enhance knowledge sharing. Conclusion: The results indicate that the proposed model of intervention in health education was effective in the moments after the intervention and one year of its accomplishment. The low cost of carrying out the proposed interventions strengthens the indication of their use, given the poor access to materials that some public schools find. Thus, the use of active methodologies can be recommended for health education interventions for students in this age groupArticle Factors related to the performance of specialized dental care centers(FapUNIFESP (SciELO), 2015) Machado, Flávia Christiane de Azevedo; Silva, Janmille Valdevino; Ferreira, Maria Ângela Fernandes; https://orcid.org/0000-0003-1587-2664Article Formação profissional de cuidadores de idosos atuantes em instituições de longa permanência(Holos, 2016) Machado, Flávia Christiane de Azevedo; Silva, Irma Lúcia Silveira; Ferreira, Maria Ângela Fernandes; Rodrigues, Maísa Paulino; https://orcid.org/0000-0003-1587-2664This is a cross-sectional, descriptive and analytical study with a quantitative approach which aimed to investigate the vocational training of caregivers who works in Homes for the Aged (HFA) in Natal / RN in the year of 2014. Therefore, semi-structured questionary was applied to 63 caregivers in 09 HFA, representing 75% of caregivers who works in these institutions. The questionary captured data related to the socioeconomic profile and to the vocational training about caring profession. These data were analyzed by observing absolute e relative frequencies and measures of central tendency of the numeric variables. In general, it was found that most of caregivers was from low socioeconomic status and started to practice the occupation without conducting a previous specific course. However, among those who attended a course, most report that the contents saw in the curriculum provided security for the praxis of care, but these people also reported the need for training. In general, the results, probably, show that there isan inadequateformaltrainingto practice the caregiver’s occupation, amidreports of short 01 week courses (n=20 interviewed) which practical activitiesconsist ofdemonstrationlessons. This revealsweaknesses in professional qualificationthatwould relatedto the absence of a guiding core curriculum and the low education required for professional practiceArticle Proposição de indicadores para vigilância da saúde bucal de adolescentes(FapUNIFESP (SciELO), 2018) Machado, Flávia Christiane de Azevedo; Souza, Georgia Costa de Araújo; Noro, Luiz Roberto Augusto; https://orcid.org/0000-0003-1587-2664The existence of a few indicators that could guide the evaluation of oral health surveillance in the primary health care attention, mainly in adolescence life cycle, raised the realization of this study. To develop indicators to this end, it was conducted: document analysis to guide the development of a logic model and selection of data to compose indicators. This selection and validation of the logic model were performed by a group of four experts that, from the perspective of the modified Delphi method, analyzed if the model illustrated the activities, results and expected impact of a primary oral health service to enable the adolescents oral health surveillance and assigned points (0-10) to each data proposed. Then, those data judged important by the consensus of experts (média≥7; standard deviation <3) were used to construct indicators. After individual analysis and group discussions, the logical model and 36 of the 48 data, initially proposed, were consensually important, resulting in 26 indicators. The indicators matrix intends to be a situational diagnostic tool to assess, plan and manage health actions to adolescents, but it can be used in other life cycles by its adaptationArticle Spatial inequality of dental caries in the Brazilian territory(FapUNIFESP (SciELO), 2019) Machado, Flávia Christiane de Azevedo; Cruz, Rayanne Karina Silva; Freitas, Yan Nogueira Leite de; Mendes, Tamires Carneiro de Oliveira; Silva, Janmille Valdivino da; Rodrigues, Maisa Paulino; Ferreira, Maria Angela Fernandes; https://orcid.org/0000-0003-1587-2664
