We aimed at analyzing education as a social determinant of the health of subjects with visual impairment, with emphasis on mental health, identifying the difficulties perceived and the coping strategies used in relation to daily adversities. It is, therefore, a descriptive and exploratory research with a qualitative approach. For data collection, we conducted semi-structured interviews with visually impaired subjects at the ophthalmology outpatient clinic of Onofre Lopes University Hospital (HUOL), in the city of Natal. The data were treated in light of the thematic analysis method described by Minayo (2008) and the contents of the listed registration units, inspired by the model of Social Determination of Health, proposed by Dahlgren and Whitehead (1991). The reflection of the analyzed information raises discussions about the persistence of adverse social factors to the full and effective inclusion process, generating normalizing attitudes
