| Abstract | Zn–Al-based alloys are widely used as tribological materials in bearing applications. Understanding the combined effects of third-element additions and cooling rates during solidification is essential for improving their wear resistance. This study investigates the influence of Cu additions (0.8 and 1.3 wt%) and cooling rates on the microstructure and wear behavior of a Zn-8wt.%Al alloy, produced using a nonsteady-state directional solidification technique. Increasing Cu content reduced the secondary dendritic spacing (λ2) and eutectic fibrous spacing (λF) at the same solidification velocity or cooling rate. Worn volume (VW) is correlated with λ2, but only in the alloy with higher Cu content does VW show a dependence on λ2. Despite its higher hardness, the alloy with 1.3 wt% Cu exhibited lower wear resistance due to a more intense release of Cu-rich phases acting as abrasive particles | |
