Abstract

In recent years, Information and Communication Technologies have enabled the emergence of various types of work mediated by digital platforms, with drivers and delivery people being the most typical examples of this scenario. Whether out of necessity or because they see it as an opportunity to improve their income, or because they are driven by the promises of flexibility and autonomy, the fact is that Brazil now has millions of uberized workers surviving informally. Although fewer in number, the presence of women working as couriers by app is a little-studied reality. With this research, we sought to understand their working conditions and contribute to the discussion on the subject from a gender perspective, bringing the experience of women who perform this function, with a focus on working hours. So we started with the following question: does app-based work and gender relations increase the working hours of delivery workers? To this end, the general objective of the research was to understand how work on digital platforms and reproductive work influence the lengthening of the working day of app-based delivery workers in Natal/RN. Specifically, we intend to analyze the working day in the context of the uberization of work; to analyze the relationship between reproductive work and gender relations and to identify and understand the perception of delivery workers about their work as app-based delivery workers. The methodology used was qualitative in nature, with a literature review followed by semi-structured interviews with interpretative and critical analysis. The results show that, because of their gender, working as app-based couriers leaves women vulnerable in various situations with establishments and customers. It was not possible to significantly measure the relationship with reproductive work or caring for other people, but it was found that long working hours prevent delivery workers from having time for leisure and self-care, compromising their own reproduction as a workforce. We hope that the gaps left can be filled in further research and that this work can serve to support an understanding of the working conditions of app-based delivery workers in the context studied.
