(FapUNIFESP (SciELO), 2016) Piuvezam, Grasiela; Pessoa, Daniela Mendes da Veiga; Pérez, Glòria; Dell'Olmo, Marc Marí; Ovalle, Marco Cornejo; Borrell, Carme; Lima, Kenio Costa de; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-2343-7251
Objective: To compare the oral health profile of institutionalized elderly persons in Brazil and in Barcelona, Spain, by gender and country of residence. Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed of individuals aged 65 years and above (n=1,440), resident in the health region of Barcelona and in Brazil. Two surveys and exams relating to the oral health status of institutionalized elderly persons in Brazil (in 2008) and in Barcelona, Spain (in 2009) were carried out. Periodontal disease, tooth loss and dental caries were analyzed, considering age and cognitive ability. The sample was stratified by gender and country. Bivariate and multivariate Robust Poisson Regression models were used to obtain adjusted Prevalence Ratios (aPR), and a 95% confidence interval (95%CI) was employed. Results: In Barcelona, men and women had a higher prevalence of periodontal illness: Men - calculus (aPR:1.5; CI:1.08-2.19) and pocket (aPR:2.05; CI:1.43-2.93) results. Women - calculus (aPR:2.4; CI:1.77-3.24) and pocket (aPR:3.2; CI:2.29-4.53) results. In Barcelona there was a lower prevalence of edentulism (aPR:0.49; CI:0.37-0.65) and functional edentulism (aPR:0.49; CI:0.40-0.60) among men. The same results were found among women with a lower prevalence of edentulism (aPR:0.49; CI: 0.41-0.58) and functional edentulism (aPR:0.42; CI: 0.30-0.49). Conclusions: A poor state of oral health of men and women was observed in both countries, with the elderly from Barcelona having worse periodontal health and the elderly from Brazil having greater tooth loss

(Ciência & Saúde Coletiva, 2019) Piuvezam, Grasiela; Medeiros, Annie Karoline Bezerra de; Barbosa, Fernanda Pinheiro; Carreiro, Adriana da Fonte Porto; Lima, Kenio Costa; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-2343-7251
This article aims to analyze the prevalence and associated factors of TMJ alterations in elderly institutionalized. An cross-sectional study of 1192 elderly institutionalized in Brazil was undertaken. Intra and extra-oral exams were performed and the TMJ was evaluated based on the Oral Health Assessment Form of the WHO (1997). Demographic data and elderly dependence were also collected. The self-perception of the elderly regarding oral health was measured using the Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index - GOHAI. Data analysis was performed using the Chi-squared test and robust Poisson regression (level of significance of 5%). The prevalence of TMJ alteration was low compared to adults and was only associated with the state of dependence of the elderly individual (independent had 45.4% more alterations than dependent individuals), gender (women had 47.4% more alterations), self-perception of oral health (who evaluated negatively had 65.6% more alterations) and the need of upper dentures (who needed some kind of upper dentures had 45.8% more alterations than those who did not). Despite being low, the presence of alterations in the TMJ was more frequent in elderly independent, women, who evaluated negatively oral health and need some kind of upper dentures

(Research, Society And Development, 2022) Piuvezam, Grasiela; Lima, Jonatas Pereira de; Lima, Caliandra Maria Bezerra Luna; Azevedo, Kesley Pablo Moraes de; Bezerra, Isaac Newton Machado; Camarotti, Maria de Fátima; Ferreira, Maria Ângela Fernandes; Martinez, Daniel Guillén; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-2343-7251
Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of a health education program in schoolchildren aimed at preventing helminth diseases from the perspective of the acquisition of knowledge and skills that favored changes and improvements in quality of life. Method: This is research with epidemiological design of intervention of the type prophylactic clinical trial. Results: The study was conducted in a public school in the city of João Pessoa / Paraíba and included in the data collection adolescents aged 10 to 14 years, enrolled in the 6th and 7th grade of Elementary School II. The results indicate that after performing a health education intervention, the number of correct answers related to the transmission of diseases was: Ascariasis (86.7%) and Hookworm (87.4%). One year after the educational intervention, the results remained positive for Ascariasis and Hookworm (74.1%) with statistical significance. The use of several active methodologies in communication with the target audience was significant to capture attention and build interaction spaces to enhance knowledge sharing. Conclusion: The results indicate that the proposed model of intervention in health education was effective in the moments after the intervention and one year of its accomplishment. The low cost of carrying out the proposed interventions strengthens the indication of their use, given the poor access to materials that some public schools find. Thus, the use of active methodologies can be recommended for health education interventions for students in this age group

This is a cross-sectional, descriptive and analytical study with a quantitative approach which aimed to investigate the vocational training of caregivers who works in Homes for the Aged (HFA) in Natal / RN in the year of 2014. Therefore, semi-structured questionary was applied to 63 caregivers in 09 HFA, representing 75% of caregivers who works in these institutions. The questionary captured data related to the socioeconomic profile and to the vocational training about caring profession. These data were analyzed by observing absolute e relative frequencies and measures of central tendency of the numeric variables. In general, it was found that most of caregivers was from low socioeconomic status and started to practice the occupation without conducting a previous specific course. However, among those who attended a course, most report that the contents saw in the curriculum provided security for the praxis of care, but these people also reported the need for training. In general, the results, probably, show that there isan inadequateformaltrainingto practice the caregiver’s occupation, amidreports of short 01 week courses (n=20 interviewed) which practical activitiesconsist ofdemonstrationlessons. This revealsweaknesses in professional qualificationthatwould relatedto the absence of a guiding core curriculum and the low education required for professional practice

The existence of a few indicators that could guide the evaluation of oral health surveillance in the primary health care attention, mainly in adolescence life cycle, raised the realization of this study. To develop indicators to this end, it was conducted: document analysis to guide the development of a logic model and selection of data to compose indicators. This selection and validation of the logic model were performed by a group of four experts that, from the perspective of the modified Delphi method, analyzed if the model illustrated the activities, results and expected impact of a primary oral health service to enable the adolescents oral health surveillance and assigned points (0-10) to each data proposed. Then, those data judged important by the consensus of experts (média≥7; standard deviation <3) were used to construct indicators. After individual analysis and group discussions, the logical model and 36 of the 48 data, initially proposed, were consensually important, resulting in 26 indicators. The indicators matrix intends to be a situational diagnostic tool to assess, plan and manage health actions to adolescents, but it can be used in other life cycles by its adaptation

Objective: The purpose of this paper was to evaluate the actions developed in oral health directed toward the institutionalized senior population from the perspective of municipal health managers and oral health professionals in primary care in Brazil. Methods: A qualitative, observational, and analytical study was developed and carried out in 11 municipalities between 2008 and 2010. Semi-structured interviews and analysis by ALCESTE software were used. The results from 48 subjects were analyzed. Results: The analysis revealed a 64% and 77% success rate for the corpus of health managers and oral health professionals, respectively. An Ishikawa diagram was generated using the subjects’ responses to identify the quality problem. Conclusions: This study verified that there is a lack of implementation of public policies directed toward seniors and also highlighted that there was lack of incentives and training to assist seniors in the municipalities. Therefore, it is necessary to invest in greater attention for senior patients who reside in homes for the aged.

Introduction:Women have been subjugated by violence in favor of the male identity and virile dominance of men. Objective:to analyze emergency care for women victims of violence in the head and neck region. Methodology:Analysis of data from the Surveillance and Accident Survey in 25 state capitals and the Federal District in 2011 througha sample of 351 visits to women between 15 and 49 years old regarding the occurrence of violence in the head and neck region. Results:The occurrence of violence was predominant in black women (70.8%), young (68.3% 20-29 years) and with little schooling (< 8 years of study), being more frequent at home (45.5 %), committed intentionally (86.9%) by a male aggressor (77.4%), identified as a partner or former intimate partner (44.5%), with the face (87.0%) the most affected head/neck region. Conclusions:Violence against women permeates the discussion of gender inequalities, intersectionality and social capital. What is important is not gender per se, but the combination of gender, race and socioeconomic class. This requires intersectoral public policies and social mobilization in favor of social capital. Therefore, the model of Care Networks, with the consequent multiprofessionality, intersectoriality and transdisciplinarity is fundamental. This presupposes, including, greater involvement of the dental surgeon in the identification and reception of victims for subsequent referrals

The present study has the objective of analyzing the approach of the aging theme in the training of professionals of higher education that integrate the Family Health Strategy (FHS) and the Family Health Support Center (NASF) teams. This is a study with a qualitative approach, of the document type, carried out in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. In order to reach the objective, the pedagogical projects of the courses for the mentioned professions were analyzed, based on the content analysis method, using the thematic analysis technique in three pre-established registration units: (i) skills and abilities ; (ii) professional profile; and (iii) curricular structure. As part of the results, from the operationalization of the analysis of the pedagogical projects emerged two thematic categories: Discussion on aging and training for health care of the elderly. The study shows that the discussion about aging in the training process of higher education professionals that integrate the FHS and NASF teams is still incipient. Thus, it is necessary to prepare people to offer integral attention to the elderly population, as well as to formulate and manage public policies for the mentioned user population of the Unified Health System (SUS)

Attracting medical professionals to work in Primary Health Care (PHC) has been an ongoing challenge for Brazil’s Unified Health System (SUS). The impossibility of a continuous and ongoing education is one of the main factors hindering the provision and retention of doctors in PHC. One of the basic premises of the Program to Value Primary Healthcare Professionals (PROVAB) was to encourage Continuous Education in Health (EPS), emphasizing the interactions between teaching, service and the local community (IESC), with the presence of pedagogical supervision by doctors trained for this purpose. The goal of this study was to analyze, based on the perceptions of their supervisors, the factors that led a group of doctors from Natal, in the State of Rio Grande do Norte, participants in the PROVAB, to stay in Primary Health care (PHC), giving it precedence over the More Doctors Program (PMM). A qualitative study was carried out, using the focal group technique with seven medical supervisors of the PROVAB and PMM. The content analysis identified five thematic categories: The political context at the start of the programs; the profile of the pedagogical supervisors; the profile of the doctors who prioritized PROVAB over the More Doctors Program (PMM); the reasons that led to the retention of PROVAB doctors in the PHC; and why not choose PHC for life? It was demonstrated that the PROVAB worked as an initial strategy to face the challenges of retraining doctors in PHC, in line with the reforms in Medical Education. Despite the difficult political environment in the years that followed the implementation of the PROVAB, there was a synergy between supervision and doctors, who were empowered to carry out their activities, providing conditions to combat unfavorable situations. Strengthening ties with the territorial context, and the skills acquired during the program, related to Primary Health Care (PHC), through the development of links with the local community, acted as factors of stimulus for the retention of doctors in PHC. This led to a change in doctors’ profiles, as they assimilated and acquired the social aspect to work of working in vulnerable areas. This movement should favor the changes predicted in Medical Schools, preventing a regression when it comes to gaps in the health care system. It also encourages the fight for a better country, in which universal access to health and to a medical professional may be not only a privilege of a few, but a guaranteed right for all

Teleatendimento à população do Rio Grande do Norte durante a pandemia da COVID-19
(Research, Society And Development, 2020) Guerra, Eliana Costa; Amancio, Amanda de Medeiros; Sousa, Lucas Cavalcante de; Viana, Jaiane Carmélia Monteiro; Cunha, Rayrane Íris Melo da; Silva, Érika Giovana Carvalho da; Medeiros, Ruan Garcia de; Ferreira, Maria Ângela Fernandes; https://orcid.org/0000-0001-8368-488X
Due to the magnitude of the new coronavirus pandemic, the routine of the general population and health services were modified in recent months. Much of the service to the population has started to be done mainly at a distance, with the help of technology tools, for instance, phones and computers, avoiding possible exposures to the virus. The aim of this study was to characterize the activities carried out in a university extension project developed by the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte. This is a descriptive, observational, qualitative and quantitative study. The teleservice operated through a call-center, from the website Orienta Coronavirus RN and WhatsApp. The work was carried out by students, teachers and health professionals from some institutions, all qualified to offer reliable information to society. In total, 2,041 attendances were made to the population of the state of Rio Grande do Norte, which 1,075 occurred through the call center, 710 through whatsapp and 256 through the Orienta Coronavirus RN website. Therefore, the project collaborated in reducing the population uncertainties about COVID-19, decreasing the search for information in the health system, as well as contributing to the academic training of students from the interprofessional perspective

This study aimed to verify health self-perception, its prevalence and associated factors in institutionalized elderly. A cross-sectional study is presented herein, conducted in 10 LongTerm care Institutions for the Elderly (LTIE) in the city of Natal (Northeast Brazil), between October and December 2013. Sociodemographic variables were analyzed, along with institution-related and health state variables. Descriptive and bivariate analyses were carried out (Chi-squared test, Fisher’s exact test or linear trend Chi-squared test), as well as multivariate analysis (logistic regression). The final sample consisted of 127 elderly. The prevalence of negative self-perceived health was 63.19% (CI 95%: 55.07-70.63), and was associated with weight loss (PR: 1.54; CI 95%: 1.19-1.99), rheumatic disease (PR: 1.46; CI 95%: 1.05-2.01) and not-for-profit LTIE (PR: 1.37; CI 95%: 1.03- 1.83), adjusted by sex. More than half of the elderly reported negative self-perceived health, which was associated with weight loss, rheumatic disease and type of institution. Actions must be developed to promote better health conditions in LTIE, such as nutrition consulting and physical therapy, to improve quality of life
