This article presents a research study focused on the production of inclusive teaching resources for geography and geosciences education, based on the articulation between accessibility, interdisciplinarity, and educational prototyping. The proposal was developed within the Geosciences Teaching Laboratory (LADGEO) in partnership with the Business-Linked Computational Intelligence Laboratory (LABICAN), both at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN), Caicó/RN Campus. The aim of this paper is to describe the process of designing, constructing, documenting, and disseminating a sound tactile model of a volcano, developed with differentiated textures, electronic components, audio messages, and Arduino-based prototyping. Methodologically, the study is characterized as applied research, with a qualitative approach and descriptive-analytical character, supported by a literature review, prototype development, and laboratory tests. As a strategy for sharing and replicability, a GitHub repository was created with guidelines for reproducing the model. The results refer to the production process, technical adjustments, documentation of the resource, and initial evaluation by a visually impaired student, who indicated the need to increase the volume of the audio resources. It is observed that the integration of spatial representation, sensory exploration, and technological resources may contribute to expanding accessibility in geography and geosciences education. As a limitation, the user evaluation occurred only in a punctual manner, requiring future investigations on usability, durability, teacher mediation, and applicability in school contexts.

Given the expansion of the wind power industry in Brazil as a strategy to address climate change, accurate information on location, distribution, and capacity is necessary for energy planning and a just energy transition. The state of Rio Grande do Norte is a leader in wind energy production. Recent advances in deep learning architectures provide solutions for extracting patterns from remote sensing images. Thus, the objective of this research is to evaluate a model for the automatic detection of wind turbines in the Semi-Arid region of Rio Grande do Norte. To this end, the proposal involved an optimized model based on the Faster R-CNN object detector, adapted with a ResNet-50 backbone combined with a Feature Pyramid Network (FPN), the use of anchors appropriate for the average resolution of Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2, and data augmentation. The dataset consists of 643 patches with spatial dimensions of 512 × 512 and 5,397 bounding boxes. The applied model correctly identified 2,180 wind turbines, with an accuracy score of 90% and an F1-score of 74%. The analysis revealed that 60% of the area where wind farms are located consists of savanna vegetation. The results contribute to future research on the detection of small targets in medium-resolution images and to the state’s energy planning.

The present work analyzes the tree coverage of Coronel Manoel Vale and Rio Branco avenues, located in the central area of Caicó, Rio Grande do Norte, focusing on the effects of low vegetation cover on the urban microclimate. In a city characterized by the hot and dry climate of the Semiarid region, the absence of trees intensifies the thermal sensation, contributes to the formation of heat islands, and reduces the environmental quality of roadways. The research employs field observation, photographic records, literature review, and geoprocessing, revealing that both avenues present a high degree of surface sealing and a low presence of vegetation, which limits comfortable pedestrian circulation and weakens the everyday use of urban space. The results indicate that the adoption of native Caatinga species can contribute to shading, air cooling, and environmental qualification of the avenues. The study highlights the need for systematic tree planting planning as a key strategy to improve thermal comfort and promote greater well-being for the population of Caicó.

This study analyzed the relationship between land surface temperature (LST), normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), and altitude in the municipalities of Lagoa Nova, located 5 in the Serra de Santana, and Santana do Matos, in the depression adjacent to the mountain range, both located in the semi-arid region of the state of Rio Grande do Norte. To this end, Landsat 8–9 (OLI/TIRS) images referring to the rainy (March 22, 2025) and dry (August 13, 2025) periods were used, as well as SRTM altimetric data, processed in QGIS software. The results indicated that altitude has a significant influence on local thermal dynamics: Lagoa Nova had milder temperatures due to its high elevation, while Santana do Matos was warmer, especially during the dry season. As for the NDVI, although Lagoa Nova had better vegetation cover indices, both municipalities had low values in the dry season, reflecting both climatic seasonality and anthropogenic pressure on natural resources. Spatial correlations reinforce the importance of altitude, relief, and vegetation in climate regulation, demonstrating relevant differences in climatic and environmental characteristics between the two municipalities. The results found showed that the use of geotechnologies is an essential tool for characterizing climate dynamics in the semiarid region, contributing to environmental management and sustainable development strategies in the region.

Comportamento interanual das precipitações no município de Jardim de Piranhas/RN e suas implicações
(Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, 2025-12-09) Santos, Millena Kris Lopes dos; Lucena, Rebecca Luna; Faria, Raila Mariz; Cabral Junior, Jório Bezerra
This study investigates the interannual behavior of precipitation in the municipality of Jardim de Piranhas/RN, Brazil, between 2000 and 2024. The research utilizes pluviometric data from Hidroweb and EMPARN, as well as complementary information from official records, local news reports, and population accounts. Statistical analysis including mean, median, extreme values, standard deviation, and quartiles allowed the identification of years with intense rainfall, such as 2008 and 2009, and severe drought periods, notably from 2015 to 2017. Graphical representations through bar charts, line graphs, and boxplots highlighted precipitation irregularities and anomalous events. Results showed that floods cause inundations, structural damage, and difficulties in accessing rural communities, while prolonged droughts lead to water crises, reliance on water trucks, and significant impacts on daily life. The study also identified the lack of consistent public policies aimed at preventing and mitigating climate impacts. It is concluded that precipitation variability directly influences the socio-environmental dynamics of the municipality, revealing its vulnerability to climate change. The findings underscore the need for water resource planning, strengthened civil defense, and sustainable adaptation strategies.

This research aimed to analyze the climatic conditions and human thermal comfort in the Brazilian semi-arid region, a hot and dry area of Brazil, using altitude as an influencing factor in thermal comfort. Sixteen municipalities belonging to the states of Pernambuco, Paraíba, Ceará, and Rio Grande do Norte were selected, eight with high altitude (Alt>500 m) and eight with low altitude (Alt<400 m). Using climatological normals from 1981-2010, descriptive statistical analyses were performed, and the bioclimatic indices of Effective Temperature (TE) and the Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI) were calculated. The results classified the municipalities at altitudes above 500 meters as "pleasant," indicating "thermal comfort," considering monthly and annual values, according to the TE and UTCI indices. In contrast, municipalities at lower altitudes were classified as having "moderate thermal stress" due to heat and "moderate heat stress" in almost all months of the year, according to TE and UTCI, respectively. Pearson's correlation analysis indicated a strong and significant relationship between the TE and UTCI indices, with a correlation coefficient value of 0.7 (p-value 0.001). It is concluded that elevated areas offer better thermal conditions in the Brazilian semi-arid region, but that although they are within the neutral range (comfort), the values are very close to the threshold of the human thermal comfort zone, and this finding highlights the importance of considering the protection of mountainous areas, especially in the face of climate change scenarios.

The municipality of Caicó, located 270 km from the capital of the state of Rio Grande do Norte, has a vast geodiversity, with inselbergs, rural areas, rocky outcrops, and river courses, which involve the local population and assist in the development of the municipality. Geodiversity, understood here as abiotic processes and elements, has accompanied terrestrial development since the formation of the planet approximately 4.5 billion years ago, as well as the development of civilization, gaining increasing strength in the academic and political arena, as exemplified by municipal incentives for the creation of geoparks. This research aims to perform a quantitative assessment of the geomorphological heritage of the municipality of Caicó, using the methodology presented in Diniz, Araújo, and Chagas (2022). A total of five sites of geomorphological interest were selected, three of which are considered geomorphosites (Ilha de Sant'Ana Tourist Complex, Gruta da Caridade, Serra de São Bernardo) and two considered geodiversity sites (Casa Forte do Cuó and Açude Itans).

Air layering is a technique for the asexual production of tree seedlings. This study, developed in Geography classes at EJA, aimed to help students gain practical knowledge of seedling production using this technique. The work began with an internet search about air layering and the importance of the common lemon, carried out by the students. In the next stage, the project was discussed and developed. A field activity was carried out to verify the process of implanting the air layering, removing the seedlings and planting them in the field. The air layering was made by reusing materials such as PET bottles, plastic bags and string. The substrate used was collected from under the canopy of the lemon tree. The air layering was removed after 90 days. In March 2023, 10 air layering plants were produced, with an average height of 1.60 m, all viable and planted in schools and donated to the students involved in the activity and their families. Planted in the field, all were viable. The students involved in 2023 gave three presentations of the research to the community. The study was replicated with the production of 18 air layers for donation to city residents. The technique has been taught to locals who seek out those involved in the study and by the Municipal Department of the Environment.

Geosite assessment is a relatively recent topic in geosciences. Several methods have been proposed to evaluate geodiversity with qualitative and quantitative objectives, either broadly (considering scientific, economic, aesthetic, touristic, and other values) or narrowly (considering scientific value as central). Some works developed for the evaluation of geological and geomorphological heritage can be cited, such as Brilha (2005), Reynard (2006), Pereira (2006), Reynard et al. (2007), Pereira (2010), Brilha (2012), and Reynard et al. (2016). However, in this work, we propose something more specific, directing our analysis towards identifying the still little-explored potential of the geoheritage of Carnaúba dos Dantas. From this perspective, this manuscript proposes an evaluation of the geoheritage of Carnaúba dos Dantas, a municipality located in the interior of the state of Rio Grande do Norte, specifically in the microregion of Eastern Seridó. To achieve the objective of inventorying new geosites, we used the quantitative assessment form method, developed by Diniz; Araújo; Chagas (2022), which takes into account scientific, touristic and/or aesthetic values, and the qualitative method developed by Araújo et al. (2024). Six sites of geological interest were evaluated, and five stood out as geosites based on the criteria of scientific and aesthetic values. Consequently, this method shows a significant response in highlighting the potential of a site.

The research seeks to identify constructions located within the legally protected area, assess the socioenvironmental impacts arising from this occupation, and highlight the need for public policies focused on territorial planning and the management of environmentally sensitive areas. The methodological procedures are based on the Brazilian Forest Code (Law No. 12,651/2012) and employ geoprocessing techniques to delimit the APP, using a 50-meter buffer on each riverbank through QGIS software. Analysis of the 2025 satellite image, along with the delimitation of the location map of the urban stretch of the Barra Nova River, allowed us to observe the progressive expansion of buildings along the banks, resulting in the identification of 45 irregular occupations within the Permanent Preservation Areas (APPs). The results indicate that the suppression of riparian vegetation, increased soil impermeabilization, the presence of livestock activities, and sediment deposition have compromised the natural hydrological regulation of the river, thus intensifying the vulnerability of the area to flooding events. Considering the physical characteristics of the region, marked by a semiarid climate, shallow and erosion-prone soils, and Caatinga vegetation, the occupation of the river margins further aggravates existing environmental fragilities. The study concludes that the situation observed in the Barra Nova River requires urgent actions involving environmental restoration, enforcement, land-use regularization, and urban planning to safeguard water resources, reduce risks, and promote safer and more sustainable urban development. The research reinforces the importance of geotechnologies as tools for territorial analysis and decision-making in environmentally vulnerable urban areas.

(Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, 2025-12-04) Santos, Lívio Guilherme dos; Cordeiro, Abner Monteiro Nunes; Dantas, Camylla da Silva; Oliveira, Paulo Jerônimo Lucena de
With the onset of industrialization and the intensity of urbanization in underdeveloped countries, there has been a complex change in the growth of cities without proper territorial planning. This has led to several problems, such as misuse and occupation of land for housing in irregular areas prone to flooding, generating risks and losses. The city of Sousa, in the interior of the state of Paraíba, has natural characteristics such as high temperatures, irregular rainfall, and extreme rainfall events, which cause flooding in riverside areas. The objective of this study is to identify areas susceptible to flooding risks associated with torrential rainfall recorded in 2008, 2009, and 2012, reporting the hazards evidenced in the municipal seat of Sousa. The method employed involved an extensive review of the literature specializing in flood risks in semi-arid environments, as well as field expeditions and the acquisition of camera images.

Analyzing and understanding the dynamics of geographic space transformation are fundamental tools to support environmental management and planning actions at the local level. Based on an integrated approach, this study aims to identify and characterize the environmental systems of the Serra de São Bernardo, located in the semi-arid region of Rio Grande do Norte, through the analysis of its physical components such as geology, geomorphology, pedology, hydrography, climate, and land use and land cover. Geomorphology was used as the main criterion for defining environmental units, and the elements were analyzed based on cartographic materials and detailed descriptions of each theme. The results showed that Serra de São Bernardo stands out as a topographic prominence within the sertaneja surface of the Seridó Potiguar, characterized by predominantly metamorphic lithologies that have preserved this residual relief throughout the regional geomorphological evolution, which resulted in vast surrounding planation surfaces known as sertões. Its natural framework—such as shallow soils and steep slopes—indicates a high susceptibility to environmental degradation processes. In this context, the importance of integrated research focused on understanding environmental systems at the studied scale is highlighted, as well as the need to deepen investigations into the dynamics and vulnerability of these geosystems.

The municipality of Jardim do Seridó has several natural attractions, which stand out for their scenic beauty and educational, scientific and tourist value, in addition to an important historical and cultural heritage, such as several cave paintings found in panels and rock shelters, left by prehistoric peoples. From these characteristics and their relationships with the geological and geomorphological aspects of the area, we previously selected two geosites (Sítio Tanques and Ponte da Pedra Lavrada), which have potential for the development of geotourism. The methodology consisted of a literature review and field trips, which enabled the recognition and geomorphological analysis of the territory and, especially, the identification of granitic macro and microforms of the geosites. We can highlight as results the possibility of inserting the municipality in the geotouristic itinerary of the State of Rio Grande do Norte, and the insertion of the geosites identified in the UNESCO World Geopark Seridó.

This research sought to understand the relationship between industrial textile automation and labor relations in the territory of Jardim de Piranhas/RN, based on a case study of an industry in that municipality, given the importance of industrial economic activity for the socio-spatial dynamics of Jardim de Piranhas. To carry out the work, bibliographic research on the subject in question was developed, as well as documentary research related to the object of study and field research on automation and labor relations in the textile production activity at a local company located in Jardim de Piranhas. As a result of the case study, it was possible to identify that the productive sector under analysis is increasingly automated, given the needs for expansion of production and competitiveness. The increased technological level of the machines is more sophisticated and has a direct impact on the human labor relations necessary for textile activity in this industry. Thus, the implementation of automation in industrial sectors has a direct impact on the functions performed by workers, as investigated in the case study developed in Jardim de Piranhas.
