(Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, 2026-02-27) Diniz, Vitória Livia Linhares; Amorim, Érico Gurgel; https://lattes.cnpq.br/1978282762927453; Oliveira, Laurent Silva de; Baracho, Maria de Fátima Paiva
Introduction: This study examined, based on the scientific literature, how health education interventions in Primary Health Care (PHC) contribute to strengthening self-care and shared decision-making (SDM) between service users and health professionals. PHC was considered the main setting for the longitudinal management of chronic conditions, and structured health education was expected to go beyond information provision by developing self-care competencies, self-efficacy, and shared responsibility. SDM, although frequently cited within person-centred care, was assumed to require explicit implementation and appropriate measurement. Methods: An integrative literature review was conducted, reported in accordance with PRISMA 2020 and performed through systematic steps (question formulation, search, selection, data extraction, and synthesis). Searches were carried out in indexed databases and a complementary source, including full-text publications from 2021 to 2025 in Portuguese, English, or Spanish. Eligible studies involved adults (≥18 years) with type 1 and/or type 2 diabetes managed in PHC and exposed to structured health education interventions. Methodological quality was appraised using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT, 2018). Results: A total of 6,420 records were identified, and 116 studies were included (115 entries in the synthesis matrix after merging multiple reports). Hybrid interventions predominated (n=72), followed by community/territory-based interventions with home visits and/or community health workers (CHW) (n=20), face-to-face group interventions (n=14), digital/remote interventions (n=4), and individual face-to-face interventions (n=5). Outcomes were mainly clinical–metabolic and self-care-related, while explicit SDM measurement was less frequent (n=17). Discussion: Findings indicated that structured, continuous interventions integrated into longitudinal follow-up tended to yield more consistent self-care outcomes, particularly when combining personalisation, reinforcement, and human support. In contrast, SDM was often treated as an implicit assumption of person-centred care, but rarely operationalised and measured as a deliberative component, limiting inferences about improvements in decision quality and shared responsibility. Final considerations: Recent evidence supports the effectiveness of PHC-based health education interventions to strengthen self-care and, partly, clinical outcomes; however, the limited operationalisation and measurement of SDM highlight the need for interventions that explicitly address options, trade-offs, values, and preferences, as well as pragmatic studies and implementation evaluations in contexts aligned with the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS) and the Family Health Strategy (ESF). Keywords: Primary Health Care; Diabetes Mellitus; Health Education; Self-Care; Shared Decision-Making.

Nutrition is paramount at all stages of life, especially in childhood, a fundamental period for human growth and development. Food preferences are shaped by the interaction of biological, social, and environmental elements, and Feeding Difficulties (FDs) affect 20 to 60% of children, potentially significantly impacting their development and family relationships if not adequately addressed. Primary Health Care (PHC) is the ideal setting to identify factors influencing children's eating habits due to direct and longitudinal contact with families. The objective of this study is to report on the experience of a training session on FDs for a PHC team. This is a qualitative experience report, conducted in a Basic Health Unit. The activity improved the team's perception of FD management, reinforcing the role of PHC in longitudinal follow-up and the promotion of healthy eating practices. The exchange of personal experiences among professionals humanized the discussion, consolidating continuing education as an essential strategy for aligning practices and promoting children's health in the community.

Introduction: the implementation of extended service hours in Primary Health Careunits in Brazil has proven to be an effective measure not only to improve populationaccess to health services but also to promote greater equity and enhance quality oflife, particularly among workers with varying work shifts. Objective: to analyze users’perception of extended service hours in primary health care in the northern zone ofthe municipality of Caicó, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. Method: a cross-sectionalstudy was conducted in the municipality of Caicó, Rio Grande do Norte, at the BoaPassagem Primary Health Care Unit between june and december 2025. The sampleconsisted of 146 users. Data were collected through a structured questionnaireincluding sociodemographic profile, health conditions, service utilization, and users’evaluation of extended service hours. Data were stored and organized using GoogleForms. Descriptive statistical methods were applied, and absolute and relativefrequencies were calculated. The study was approved by the Research EthicsCommittee of FACISA/UFRN under approval number 7,560,868. Results:mostusers had accessed health services more than six times (37.7%). The primary reasonfor seeking care was medical consultation (80.8%), and 39.7% accessed the servicethrough spontaneous demand. The majority were registered at the Boa PassagemPHC unit (89.9%). Notably, 66.4% reported that they would not have been able toaccess the service without the extended hours. Additionally, 67.8% were aware of theextended hours strategy, and 50.7% had previously used this service modality.Nearly all respondents (99.3%) indicated that extended hours facilitated access tocare and contributed to improvements in service delivery and quality. The sameproportion stated they would recommend expanding this strategy to other regions ofthe municipality. Conclusion: the extended service hours experience emerges as aninnovation promoting equity in primary health care within the northeastern Braziliansemi-arid region. It transcends the notion of simply “additional hours” and establishesitself as a comprehensive health justice strategy that addresses structural barriersrelated to gender, social class, and time constraints.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder with high clinical variability; therefore, early diagnosis and timely intervention are crucial factors for prognosis and symptom mitigation. Despite legislation mandating the screening of developmental risk, discontinuities in childcare follow-up hinder the effectiveness of these actions, leading to a higher average age at diagnosis. Given this scenario, the qualification of Primary Health Care (PHC) professionals for screening and detecting warning signs becomes indispensable to optimize workflow and early referral. This study is an Experience Report of an educational intervention carried out at the Dr. Ferreirinha Basic Health Unit (UBS) in the municipality of Currais Novos-RN. The objective was to report and analyze the experience of training the full PHC team (including community health agents and the multidisciplinary team) for the early recognition of developmental delay signs linked to ASD. The teaching methodology utilized reflective questions to promote engagement and interdisciplinary discussion, resulting in a highly productive meeting and the clarification of several team doubts. The experience demonstrated the effectiveness of active methodology as a tool for Permanent Health Education, highlighting the importance of continuous professional qualification for the responsiveness and coordination of care regarding child neurodevelopment.

Introduction: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a highly prevalent chronic condition whose adequate management depends on patients’ knowledge and self-care practices. Assessing this knowledge is essential for guiding educational strategies in Primary Health Care. Methods: This cross-sectional, descriptive pilot study was conducted between november and december 2025 in a primary care unit in Currais Novos, Brazil, including 21 individuals with T2DM selected by convenience sampling. A sociodemographic and clinical form and the Diabetes Knowledge Questionnaire (DKN-A) were applied. Data were analyzed descriptively. Results: Most participants were women (85.7%), with a mean age of 67.5 years, low schooling, and low income. Hypertension and dyslipidemia were the most frequent comorbidities. The mean DKN-A score was 6.8, and 71.4% demonstrated insufficient knowledge. Lower scores tended to occur among insulin users, and poorer glycemic control was observed among those with lower knowledge levels. Conclusion: The insufficient knowledge identified reinforces the importance of targeted educational interventions. As a pilot study, the results are exploratory but provide valuable guidance for future research phases and educational planning in Primary Health Care.

The increasing prevalence of mental health disorders among adolescents and high school students highlights the urgent need for effective and accessible mental health promotion strategies. This review examined the impact of mobile app–based digital interventions on students’ mental health, emphasizing the integration of social-emotional skills and the educational applicability of such technologies. Thirteen studies were analyzed, including interventions based on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), chatbots, gamification, and transdiagnostic platforms. Findings indicate that these tools reduce depression, anxiety, and stress symptoms, enhance engagement and adherence, and may improve academic performance. However, challenges remain regarding ecological validity, long-term adherence, and cultural adaptation. Overall, digital interventions represent promising and scalable approaches for psychological and educational support, provided that they are implemented with methodological rigor and personalized design.

Smoking, one of the main risk factors for the development of oncological and cerebro-cardiovascular diseases, remains a major preventable cause of global morbidity and mortality. Conducting support groups through health education in Primary Health Care (PHC) is essential for raising awareness and empowering patients in smoking cessation, thereby promoting effective behavioral change. This experience report aims to describe the smoking cessation program implemented at the Silvino Dantas Primary Health Care Center (PHCC), located in Caicó, RN, by a Family and Community Medicine resident, highlighting the challenges, strategies adopted, and perspectives for strengthening tobacco-control efforts within PHC. This experience report was developed from March 2024 to October 2025 and encompasses the planning, implementation, and outcomes of smoking cessation activities carried out in PHC, involving both support groups and individual follow-up. The team underwent training promoted by the Municipal Health Secretariat to strengthen their skills in smoking-cessation management strategies and multiprofessional integration. A total of 11 smokers were followed, with ages ranging from 33 to 78 years (mean = 59.4; median = 61). Regarding treatment outcomes, 36.4% of patients completely quit smoking, 9.1% experienced relapse after a period of abstinence, 18.2% were in the process of reducing consumption, 27.3% discontinued follow-up, and 9.1% maintained continuous smoking at the end of the observation period. The experience demonstrated that smoking cessation care in PHC requires integration between group and individual approaches, as many users show greater responsiveness to personalized interventions, particularly when emotional vulnerabilities, adherence barriers, and complex social contexts are present. Additionally, the active role of Community Health Workers (CHWs), combined with the Person-Centered Clinical Method (PCCM) and multiprofessional support, proved essential for active case-finding, relapse prevention, and the development of more sustainable therapeutic pathways. This experience showed that, despite adherence challenges and territorial complexities, integrated strategies involving individualized care, multiprofessional support, and the active involvement of CHWs strengthened smoking cessation efforts at the Silvino Dantas PHCC and point toward more effective approaches for addressing tobacco use.

Insomnia is a frequent complaint among elderly women in Primary Health Care (PHC), often associated with medication and the maintenance of inadequate sleep habits. This context reinforces the importance of developing educational strategies that promote reflection on the rational use of medications and encourage the adoption of healthy practices. This study aimed to report and analyze an educational intervention focused on promoting sleep hygiene, based on the principles of Continuing Health Education and Critical Pedagogy. This is a Systematized Experience Report, with a qualitative approach, developed during the Medical Residency program in Family and Community Medicine. The intervention consisted of three group meetings with elderly women, in which the educational game "Sleep Trail" was used as a playful tool to promote learning and dialogue about sleep habits and the use of hypnotic medications. Information was obtained through direct observation, group discussions, and field diary entries. The results showed gradual changes in the participants' sleep habits, with greater understanding of factors that interfere with rest and critical reflection on the continuous use of hypnotics. The discussions favored the strengthening of bonds and acceptance between the participants and the health team, transforming the group into a space for listening and shared learning. In a transversal way, the educational process contributed to overcoming the so-called "pill culture," promoting autonomy, dialogue, and co-responsibility in care. It is concluded that the use of active methodologies, such as educational games, was configured as a device for Continuing Health Education, capable of promoting meaningful learning and transformation of practices in the daily routine of Primary Health Care. The experience reaffirms the potential of playfulness and qualified listening as strategies for coping with medicalization and strengthening person-centered care.

The concept of health has evolved historically, incorporating social and cultural aspects. In this context, Health Care Networks (HCNs) have emerged as an alternative to fragmented systems, with Primary Health Care (PHC) coordinating care. This study sought to understand the perceptions of users of the João XXIII Family Health Unit in Caicó (RN) regarding the municipal health network and the factors that guide their choice between different services. Three focus groups were held, totaling 21 participants, with qualitative content analysis according to Bardin's proposal. Five main categories were identified: fragility in understanding the network's flows; need for greater access to health information; search guided by ease of access; importance of the bond with the health team; and perception of service resolution. It was observed that many users associate effectiveness with immediacy and a lack of knowledge about conditions sensitive to PHC. The relevance of popular health education as a strategy for empowerment and for the proper use of the network was also highlighted. It is concluded that strengthening PHC, promoting health education, and training teams can optimize the use of the RAS and consolidate the coordination of care.

Ambulatory Care Sensitive Conditions (ACSC) comprise a set of health problems whose prevention and control can be effectively carried out within the scope of Primary Health Care (PHC). The analysis of hospitalizations for ACSC constitutes an important indicator of the quality of care provided at this level and is particularly relevant among older adults, given their higher demand for hospital admissions. This study aimed to analyze and describe the causes of ACSC hospitalizations in older adults in Brazil. A systematic review was conducted in the PubMed/Medline, Web of Science, Science Direct, Scopus, Embase, Cochrane Collaboration Library, and Google Scholar databases, using the descriptors “Ambulatory Care Sensitive Conditions,” “Hospitalization,” “Cause,” and “Older Adults.” Observational studies published in full text, with no language or time restrictions, were included. From each selected article, data were extracted regarding authorship, year of publication, sample size, age, sex, study region, study design, data source, main results, temporal trends, relationship with the Family Health Strategy (FHS), and conclusions. The quality of evidence was assessed using the GRADE tool. The findings indicate that heart failure, cerebrovascular diseases, and pulmonary conditions—particularly pneumonia and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)—were the leading causes of ACSC hospitalizations among older adults in Brazil. Higher frequencies were observed among men and in more advanced age groups, along with a downward trend in hospitalization rates over time, possibly associated with the expansion of the Family Health Strategy (FHS). These results reinforce the importance of strengthening PHC as the cornerstone of the health system and of developing public policies directed toward the older population, with the aim of reducing morbidity and mortality and improving the quality of care.

Introduction/Justification: Low back pain is considered a public health problem, causing a significant portion of work absenteeism. Its risk factors include female gender, age, and performing repetitive strain activities. This type of work is very common in rural areas, where the peculiarities of health care can also interfere with the care process (MALTA, 2022). Objectives: To report the experience of being part of a Family Health Team in a rural setting, mainly aiming to share the challenges and potential existing in the management of low back pain in rural workers. Materials and Methods: This is a descriptive health study with a qualitative approach, of the experience report type. This production occurred from my experience as a recently graduated doctor, working in the family and community medicine residency program, between 2023 and 2024, in the rural area of the municipality of Caicó-RN, in the interior of northeastern Brazil. During this period, approximately 960 patients with complaints of low back pain were treated, and from this, it was possible to reflect and consider this symptom and the particularities of its care in rural settings, including the challenges and potential of public health. Results and Discussion: For approximately two years, I was part of a rural family health team, where I was able to experience the particularities of health care. There were many challenges encountered: long distances traveled, little human and structural support, and different disease profiles compared to urban settings. Among the most common complaints in the office, low back pain was present from the beginning. In addition to all the universal risk factors, in my local reality I encountered other particularities and barriers to managing this symptom. In practice, it was difficult to refer patients for additional care, whether it was exams or consultations with physiotherapists and other specialists. And this directly reflected in the patients' outcomes, especially in the most severe cases. Since low back pain management must be multidisciplinary, medication-only treatment resulted in temporary improvement, chronic use of analgesics, and frequent relapses. Final considerations: It is discouraging to see a patient not improving due to issues that go beyond their professional practice and domain. However, this difficulty led to professional development, as it allowed me to learn about therapeutic alternatives that could be put into practice in rural settings, in addition to encouraging me to talk to the team and management in search of solutions.

The physician-centered healthcare model, still is hegemonic within the Brazilian Healthcare System (SUS), it generates a vast demand, leading to consequences such as hypermedicalization and the common practice of automatic renewal of benzodiazepine prescriptions. This reality presents significant challenges for physicians, particularly due to the dependency often associated with the prolonged use of these medications and the negative impacts on patients's quality of life. This work, is a experience report, addresses the challenges and lessons learned during the Medical Residency period at the Expedito Araújo Primary Healthcare Unit in the city of Currais Novos, RN, in facing this scenario. The objective is to report the successes and failures, the facilitators and obstacles encountered in the process of benzodiazepine deprescription, highlighting strategies adopted to overcome resistance from patients and their families, the engagement of the multidisciplinary team, and the importance of health education. The report also reflects on the impact of this process on clinical practice, emphasizing the need for patient-centered care and the promotion of evidence-based practices. And therefore to contribute to the discussion on benzodiazepine deprescription in primary care and inspire new approaches that promote the rational use of medications within the Brazilian Healthcare System.

Cardiorespiratory arrest (CRA) is characterized by the cessation of cardiac mechanical activity and is detected by the absence of signs of circulation, therefore considered a public health problem. Aiming to reverse this collapse, the Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) method was developed as an attempt to regain spontaneous circulation. Therefore, training in Basic Life Support (BLS) currently represents a policy strategy to support the population's health. Thus, the present study aims to train professionals at the Basic Health Unit (UBS) - Santa Costa in Basic Life Support in the primary care setting and characterize the structure of the unit, its supplies and urgent and emergency medications. During the intervention project, the professionals participating in the study received theoretical-practical training on the topic. The data collected were tabulated and analyzed, making it possible to infer that the professionals already had some level of prior knowledge on the subject, but that the study was relevant to the process of permanent training of UBS professionals, as it made it possible to rectify mistakes and professional advancement, due to the fact that employees improved their expertise on the subject. Thus, allowing us to contribute to the qualification of services offered to the population and the improvement of work skills. Due to the facts mentioned, PCR is characterized as a public health problem that deserves attention, and the reduction of undesirable outcomes is a challenge for health services and society as a whole. Finally, it is assumed that this work has provided qualified individuals with a greater connection between theory and practice, allowing them to instigate reflections regarding the importance of the topic and the actions of professionals.

This study analyzes the integration of educational groups into the medical curriculum of the Multicampi School of Medical Sciences (EMCM) at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN), focusing on the Community Integrated Experiences (VIC). The National Curricular Guidelines for Medicine and the National Primary Care Policy guide the training of professionals with a humanistic, ethical, and critical perspective, capable of acting across different levels of healthcare with a focus on health promotion, prevention, recovery, and rehabilitation for both individuals and communities. This qualitative and documentary research relied on an analysis of the Pedagogical Course Project (PPC) and supplementary materials, evaluating the application of methodologies such as Problem-Based Learning (PBL) and the use of educational groups. The findings reveal that although the PPC emphasizes humanistic and community-oriented training, the approach to educational groups is limited, treated secondarily in some curricular components. Educational groups, described as therapeutic and pedagogical spaces, are essential tools for developing technical, ethical, and teamwork skills, promoting comprehensive care aligned with the needs of the Unified Health System (SUS). However, challenges such as the lack of specific training and the predominance of a biomedical model limit the practice and consolidation of these groups in medical education. The study proposes strategies to expand the use of therapeutic groups, including interdisciplinary integration, adapting curricular components to incorporate practical skills in group dynamics, and implementing supervised community projects. It concludes that medical education should prioritize the theoretical and methodological strengthening of these groups, promoting a more comprehensive care model aligned with Brazil's social and public health demands.

Primary Health Care aims to implement actions in the individual, familiar and collective spheres, seeking to guarantee the constitutionally guaranteed principles of universality, integrality and equity. Aiming to guarantee these rights, several strategies were developed over the decades in Brazil, being some of them focused on the issue of guaranteeing access to health services. The guarantee of access is directly linked to the construction and activity of primary health care, since the organizational model of health networks has primary health as the main gateway. Therefore, the embracement process is an important tool for guaranteeing access to services, respecting and strengthening the principle of universality. Aiming to guarantee the right of access to users in the Paulo VI neighborhood, a project from the perspective of continuing education was done, as an attempt to qualify the professionals to provide reception with qualified listening and classification of risk/social vulnerability. The implementation of the project had a significant impact on the reality of the healthcare team, promoting changes in routines and organizational structures, thus ensuring visibility of spontaneous demand and safeguarding the importance of primary Health Care in chronic conditions.

In the context of healthcare in Brazil and worldwide, there is a growing need for practical and effective tools to assist healthcare professionals in their daily practice and updating routine. This demand arises in light of the massive amount of scientific production that emerges day after day, making it humanly impossible to absorb all the knowledge produced. By condensing information into a single, simplified manual, it is possible to align flows, avoid inconsistencies in care for users, and facilitate access to information for different classes of workers. Thus, with the intention of meeting part of this demand for instrumentation of primary care services, this work aims to produce an experience report on the creation and implementation of clinical conduct manuals at the Prefeito José Vilani de Melo Lula Basic Health Unit (Currais Novos – RN). The materials produced during the Family and Community Medicine Residency were directed at the management of systemic arterial hypertension and prenatal routines, using language that is accessible to all workers in the service. The aim was to report on the process of creating the manuals, presenting them to the team, and the difficulties and potential of this type of intervention in this scenario. Initially, the implementation of these manuals resulted in significant improvements in the alignment of the team's work, fostering standardization of care, as well as providing the creation of a space for collective discussion within the UBS. Challenges were present during the process, such as the difficulty of organizing the team's schedule for meetings and the difficulty of producing physical manuals. However, the staff was very receptive to the intervention, opening up room for expanding these tools to other topics, the possibility of covering more health units, and increasing the participation of other sectors in the process.

Low back pain represents one of the main health challenges on a global scale. In this sense, the present study has the general objective of investigating the occurrence of low back pain in patients treated at a Basic Health Unit (UBS), located in the urban area of the municipality of Caicó - RN. This is a study that adopts a mixed approach, combining quantitative aspects - an observational and descriptive research, which analyzes the prevalence of chronic low back pain (CLBP) among users of a basic health unit located in the urban area of Caicó, in Rio Grande do Norte - and qualitative aspects - a scoping review, which explores the theoretical framework on CLBP and culminates in the creation of an illustrative manual. Data collection was carried out through medical records collected from January to October 2024. Data analysis was done descriptively. The results indicate that, of the 2,667 registered consultations, 3% were categorized as osteomyarticular involvement, with emphasis on low back pain (M545), followed by muscle pain (L18). These findings suggest possible underreporting and lack of knowledge regarding the coding of diagnoses. Therefore, it is concluded that CLBP has a significant impact on the quality of life and functionality of users, emphasizing the importance of multidisciplinary interventions that integrate pharmacological treatments, physical therapies and educational actions. Finally, regarding the manual, it is highly relevant in primary health care, being an educational tool for users and professionals of the Family Health Strategy

Brazil has the third-largest prison population in the world, totaling 644,794 individuals, of which 10,477 are housed in penitentiary institutions in Rio Grande do Norte. These institutions are characterized by violence, poor health and hygiene conditions, and the presence of criminal factions. As prison health care in the country is part of the Unified Health System (SUS), ensuring care for people deprived of liberty is essential. Institutionalized through the National Policy for Comprehensive Health Care for People Deprived of Liberty in the Prison System (PNAISP), comprehensive access to health care for this population is carried out by Prison Primary Care Teams(eABP), which operate through interprofessional collaboration. This study aims to report the experience of a Family and Community Medicine resident as part of the health team in a prison in Rio Grande do Norte. It is a qualitative, descriptive study with ethnographic inspiration. Data were recorded in a field diary between March 2023 and December 2024. For analysis, the data were thematically organized into four categories: i) Health as a trophy, ii) Gender and control, iii) Pharmaceuticals and dynamics of power in prison, and iv) Interprofessional work in health care. The results reveal challenges such as structural limitations, overcrowding, lack of public policies, and failure to ensure comprehensive health care access. It was found that health functions as a bargaining tool within the institution. Gender issues, marked by social stigmas, permeate the dynamics of the prison environment. Additionally, psychotropic drugs are often used as instruments of control and survival, extending beyond their biological purpose. In this context, interprofessional work emerges as a fundamental strategy to ensure access to health care for this population. It is concluded that the work of multiprofessional teams, combined with the presence of Family and Community Medicine as a generalist specialty, contributes to fostering reflections on health care in the prison system. This approach seeks to promote ethical and humanized practices through integrated actions that address the complexities and specificities of this context.
