ILHA DO MEDO: UMA ANÁLISE DO IMPACTO DO SIMBOLISMO EM SCORSESE

Abstract

Shutter Island, premiered in cinemas in 2010, translating the novel written by Dennis Lehane in 2003. Directed by Martin Scorsese, the film was a success when it told the story of detective Teddy Daniels, played by Leonardo DiCaprio, at the Ashecliffe Hospital for the Criminally Insane. After detecting potentially symbolist traits in the film, this study carried out a research for bibliographic material on the origin and main works of the movement, in order to identify similar characteristics in Scorsese's film. The studies of Álvaro Cardoso Gomes (1994), Elisana de Carli (2013) and Maria Thereza Azevedo (2011) were used as a basis for this analysis, which focused mainly on the play A Intrusa (1890), by Belgian playwright Maurice Maeterlinck, to identify parallels with Shutter Island.
