Performando a branquitude: uma análise da passagem racial e temas feministas em Passing de Nella Larsen

Abstract

Passing (1929), by Nella Larsen, is one of the most emblematic works of African American literature. The objective of this study is to analyze how Larsen constructs the female characters Clare Kendry and Irene Redfield to challenge rigid views of racial and gender identity, reflecting the challenges faced by Black women in an oppressive society. This research seeks to expand the discussion on racial passing and performativity, drawing on theoretical contributions from authors such as Judith Butler, bell hooks, Hazel V. Carby, and Gayle Wald. The methodology involved a critical reading of the novel, bibliographic research, and textual analysis based on literary and social theories. The analysis revealed that the characters' choices and interactions expose the fluidity of social categories and problematize the norms imposed by society. Thus, Passing reaffirms its relevance as an essential work for understanding the dynamics of power and oppression that shape social identities.
