Transgeneridade na infância

Abstract

Transgenderism is defined as the incompatibility between the biological sex, defined at birth by genitalia, and psychological sex, the one to which the transgender individual believes he or she belongs. Despite not being a new phenomenon, with records of trans experience dating back to ancient Rome, the terms "transsexual" and "transgender" would only be coined in the middle of the last century, with the growing medical interest in the subject. The lack of understanding about the causes involved with transgender identity is responsible, in part, for the harassment and prejudice suffered by people who identify as trans - including children and adolescents. The present work sought to elucidate, through a narrative literature review, the presence of transgenderism in childhood, which biological markers are related to transgenderism and what role the social environment, especially the school environment, plays in the development and management of gender identities in children.
