Although tourism has grown rapidly since World War II, diverse factors of varying magnitude have influenced how it is conceived, planned, and managed in localities. Increased and improved access to and use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) have necessitated that a location's product and service offerings be prepared to welcome this new consumer profile, through more thoughtful and structured hospitality designed to enhance the visitor experience. Therefore, some cities have undergone transformations related to new technologies, giving rise to concepts such as Smart Cities, Responsive Cities, and Smart Tourist Destinations. It is believed that these new technologies can be used to generate a more efficient and personalised welcome through so-called Smart Hospitality, providing a positive experience for tourists through information resources and technological infrastructure to facilitate their arrival and stay. However, it is also necessary to consider the humanisation of these technologies in the city, which is the idea of a human-centred smart city. This is crucial for ensuring that technological development is a tool, not the only means, and that it's for all citizens, whether residents or visitors. Based on this, this study proposes a model for measuring Smart Hospitality for a tourist destination based on a system of indicators linked to management and infrastructure. As a methodological approach, we presented the research in a multipaper format—multiple articles, each providing important insights for developing the final model. The research was exploratory and descriptive, using a survey-type questionnaire with hospitality and tourism technology experts. From there, the data were processed quantitatively and qualitatively, and content analysis and descriptive statistics were used to support the analysis, using Excel software. The results were achieved through systematic literature reviews, bibliographic and documentary reviews, and field research, which provided the knowledge needed to create and format the final model proposed for measuring the locality's Smart Hospitality level. The model presented in this research is expected to contribute to city management, providing essential information for strategically welcoming visitors. This improves the competitiveness of tourist destinations by understanding the locality's Smart Hospitality level and collecting data generated by visitors and residents. This data can help inform the best strategy and how local management can use this information to improve the welcome offered to visitors and residents, leveraging technology to obtain more and better information about the profiles of these tourists.

This research addresses the theme of inclusive education for tourism and has as its general objective "To understand the professional training and the inclusion process of students with specific educational needs in the courses of the Tourism, Hospitality and Leisure (THL) Axis of the Instituto Federal do Maranhão Campus São Luís Centro Histórico, considering institutional guidelines and pedagogical practices". The themes addressed are based on the connection between the universal right to inclusive education and the importance of accessible tourism. Regarding education, which has recently incorporated the principles of inclusion and accessibility, it is configured as a movement of a social nature that seeks to guarantee access to school and the right to quality referenced education. It is recognized that tourism, as an educational and sociocultural practice, needs to adapt and adopt inclusive principles that ensure the full participation of people with disabilities in tourist activities. The study reveals how legislation and policies can delineate and ensure strategies and guarantees so that students with specific educational needs can develop their potential, exercise their citizenship and actively participate in society. Dealing with inclusive education in tourism is seeking guarantees so that tourist destinations are able to contemplate human diversity in cultural mediation with qualified professionals, in the tourist structure and in the promotion of meaningful experiences for all visitors. The study, with a qualitative and descriptive approach, used bibliographic and field research as procedures in the methodology through content analysis with an emphasis on three professional technical courses in the Tourism, Hospitality and Leisure Axis: Integrated Events; Subsequent Tourism Guide; and Accommodation Education for Young People and Adults (EJA). The methodological process included the survey and documentary analysis, contemplating the National Curricular Guidelines, the Institutional Development Plan and the Course Pedagogical Projects, in addition to the institutional regulations on inclusion at IFMA. In the field research, electronic forms and semi-structured interviews were used to capture experiences and perceptions in the investigated context. The delimitation of the target audience was made considering the direct link to the theme, servers, teachers, NEE support technicians, pedagogues and students with disabilities, totaling 21 interviewees. From the documentary evidence and the field research data, the study indicates a consonance between the current legal provisions and the institutional documents, revealing normative alignment and coherence in the guidelines that guide educational practice. Regarding the teaching and learning processes, it is observed that IFMA servers generally demonstrate little training in the area of inclusion, little engagement to undertake specific active methodologies and the fragility of the school in structuring and basing a more consistent approach to integrate social inclusion in the educational system. As for the students, it is perceived that they understand the need to promote continuing education and pedagogical support to servers for more inclusive care and the demand for improvement of educational technological support for the development of skills. The research showed that gaps still persist in educational inclusion in the courses of the Technological, Humanistic and Linguistic (THL) axis of IFMA, especially with regard to the need to prepare teachers to work with inclusive education in order to effectively contribute to the critical, qualified and socially committed professional training of students in the face of the demands of the world of work.

New ways of consumption have emerged through contemporary economic models, among which the sharing economy stands out. Within the hospitality sector, Short-Term Rental Platforms (STRPs) have gained prominence by catering to the expectations of the contemporary tourist. Characterized by strong reliance on technology, these travelers seek authentic experiences, often aspiring to live like a resident of the destination they visit. Although academic research has extensively explored the impacts of tourism activity, there remains a notable gap in studies addressing the specific implications of STRPs. These implications range from the absence of tailored regulatory frameworks to broader challenges affecting social wellbeing. As STRPs continue to expand worldwide, such challenges have become increasingly universal, reinforcing the need for systematic analysis of this dynamic. This study addresses the following research question: What are the implications of STRPs for social well-being, and what community-based mediating solutions can be proposed to address them? To respond, the overarching objective was defined as analyzing the impacts of STRPs, as an expression of the sharing economy, on social well-being. The study also sought to generate data that could inform critical reflections on these platforms in the urban tourism context and enrich theoretical debates in the field of tourism studies. Three specific objectives guided the research: (i) to identify the impacts generated by STRPs as part of the sharing economy; (ii) to examine which aspects of social well-being are affected by user behaviors, based on the perceptions of the local community; and (iii) to propose, as an academic contribution, community-driven mediating solutions that may mitigate the challenges identified, thereby advancing discussions on sustainable tourism theory. Methodologically, this qualitative investigation unfolded in three stages: a comprehensive literature review; the use of focus groups with key stakeholders— Professional Property Managers, Hosts, and Non-Host Community Members; and the development of a Mediating Matrix. Data analysis was conducted with theoretical support, providing fresh insights into the study of sustainable tourism. The findings reveal that the impacts of STRP activity in Brazilian cities largely mirror those observed internationally, with stronger emphasis on behavioral dimensions. These impacts can be grouped into three main categories: education and safety, sustainability, and regulation. Such categories informed the design of the Mediating Matrix, which represents one of the main contributions of this research. The study concludes by underscoring the relevance of this topic for academic inquiry and its potential to guide both society and policymakers in addressing the challenges posed by STRPs. Finally, it calls for further research to confirm these findings and explore new perspectives on this emerging form of accommodation.

"Santo de casa faz milagre?" - a construção de monumentos católicos como atrativos turísticos nos municípios de Crato (CE) e Barbalha (CE)
(Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, 2025-09-26) Albuquerque, Mariene Cavalcante Borba de; Alves, Maria Lúcia Bastos; Oliveira, Almir Felix Batista de; Alves, Josemery Araújo; Oliveira, Christian Dennys Monteiro de; Cordeiro, Maria Paula Jacinto
This thesis aims to analyze the articulation between the public, private, and ecclesial sectors in the governance of Catholic monuments, considered as religious tourism attractions, in the municipalities of Crato (CE) and Barbalha (CE), Brazil. The empirical field of the research encompasses the monuments of Our Lady of Fátima and Saint Anthony, erected in the Cariri region of Ceará, which is strongly influenced by Juazeiro do Norte, one of the main centers of religious tourism in Northeastern Brazil. This is a qualitative multiple-case study that examines the construction of religious monuments in different destinations. The choice of contiguous municipalities made it possible to observe how governance actions, whether divergent or convergent, undertaken by similar groups of social actors within the same context, influence in different ways the establishment of religious tourist attractions, resulting in distinct dynamics and outcomes. The study covers the period from 2014 to 2024, considering the inauguration of the first monument and the year of completion of the investigation. The data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis, drawing on materials obtained through documentary and bibliographic research, semi-structured interviews, photographic records, and participant observation, which resulted in a field diary. The results indicate that the consolidation of religious tourist attractions, whether strongly rooted in the local context or even when not endogenous, depends on the incorporation of ritual and symbolic practices that confer meaning and authenticity to the space, in addition to adequate infrastructure. The findings reveal that religious monuments hold potential for tourist legitimation, provided they are supported by distinctive identity attributes. It is concluded that governance constitutes a decisive factor for the effectiveness of tourism activity, with the absence of articulation and the exclusive dependence on public management actions standing as barriers to its development. This highlights the need for a collaborative governance model within a process of horizontal articulation among the multiple social actors involved.

Por um mundo melhor: sustentabilidade no palco do Rock in Rio
(Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, 2025-10-02) França, Karen Daniele Lira de; Araújo, Maria Valéria Pereira de; Alves, Josemery Araújo; Marques Júnior, Sérgio; Matias, Esdras Matheus Silva; Chagas, Marcio Marreiro das
In a global context of increasing environmental awareness, music festivals have endeavored to align with the sustainability paradigm. To communicate their sustainable initiatives effectively, these events can leverage Signaling Theory, which posits that organizations can mitigate information asymmetry by issuing visible and credible signals regarding their internal practices. In this context, the Rock in Rio music festival is notable for its sustainability plan, which is anchored in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This festival serves as the central focus of the current research, which examines the intersection of music festivals, sustainability, and Signaling Theory. Presented in a multipaper format, this study investigates how both Rock in Rio and its sponsoring brands communicate their dedication to sustainability and the subsequent impact of this communication on public trust. The first chapter involved a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) to determine how sustainability is addressed in music festivals. The research employed the TCCM methodology, which assesses the Theory, Context, Characteristics, and Methods of the analyzed articles. The findings highlighted a significant theoretical gap, as most studies lacked an explicit theoretical foundation and predominantly focused on Europe, with limited research from Brazil. The second chapter centered on an SLR to examine the application of Signaling Theory within tourism research. The analysis indicated that while the theory is extensively used to study the communication of quality and reliability across various tourism sectors, its application in event management remains limited. In the third chapter, a qualitative study was conducted to analyze the sustainability-related content posted on Instagram by Rock in Rio and its sponsoring brands, Natura and Heineken. The content analysis revealed that both the festival and the brands effectively use Signaling Theory through visible actions and marketing campaigns. Their communication narratives are segmented into distinct themes: environmental preservation (Natura), technological innovation (Heineken), and urban and social sustainability (Rock in Rio). However, the analysis also highlighted a lack of consistent communication in the post-event period. The fourth chapter involved a quantitative survey with 251 participants from Rock in Rio 2024 to analyze the public's perception of trust. Using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM), the study’s final model confirmed that green advertising, brand identity, and educational experience directly influence sustainable trust. Conversely, brand quality and the experiential dimensions of entertainment, aesthetics, and escapism were found to be insufficient in generating this type of trust. It was concluded that festival participants provided positive feedback on the brands' sustainability initiatives, confirming that trust is established through effective communication signals. Suggestions for future research include conducting comparative and longitudinal studies to analyze the evolution of sustainability strategies across different contexts and over time.

This thesis examines the intersection between the individual and the city, highlighting how personal, subjective, and collective experiences shape urban cultural identity. In a globalized context where notions of space and time become fluid, cultural identities interconnect, creating a diverse mosaic. The research investigates the influence of factors such as class, race, ethnicity, and gender on urban experiences, emphasizing the significance of Cultural Studies in understanding these dynamics. Cities are presented as centers of cultural production, where everyday practices and artistic expressions converge to form hybrid identities, underscoring the need for multidisciplinary approaches to analyze the complexities of contemporary urban life.

Gestão de projetos turísticos: a teoria do sucesso aplicada à roteirização
(Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, 2025-08-25) Virginio, Darlyne Fontes; Araújo, Maria Valeria Pereira de; https://orcid.org/0000-0001-6302-1173; http://lattes.cnpq.br/9227834040889428; Alvares, Daniela Fantoni; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-2433-0448; http://lattes.cnpq.br/8379936769561038; Silva, David Leonardo Bouças da; Bridi, Guilherme; Medeiros Júnior, Josué Vitor de
Tourism activity must incorporate project management into its strategic initiatives, as it is through projects that organizations have innovated, implemented improvements, and developed new products. Although project management is often approached in a general way, it is important to consider the particularities of tourism when applying concepts, methodologies, and techniques. In this context, tourism projects tend to provoke significant transformations in the physical, social, environmental, and economic dimensions of places, thus establishing themselves as a powerful agenda. However, in order to secure funding and invest in new products, success in these initiatives becomes a decisive factor—especially when resources originate from the public sector. Therefore, the Project Success theory was applied to the field of public sector tourism project management in Brazil, particularly in the management of tourism route development projects (which are essential for enhancing destination offerings). Accordingly, the general objective of this study was to analyze the management of tourism route development projects—their conception, assumptions, and application—within the scope of the Tourism Regionalization Program (PRT), in light of project success theory. From a methodological perspective, the study adopts a constructivist epistemological stance with a critical bias, applied in nature, and follows a quali-quantitative approach to the research problem. The study population comprises managers who currently or previously worked on publicly or Sebrae-funded tourism route development projects, following specific criteria to define the four sample groups, totaling 30 managers. The geographic scope is the Northeast region of Brazil. The research was conducted in three stages: bibliographic, documental, and quali-quantitative. Data collection was carried out through mixed technical procedures, including literature and document review, semi-structured interviews, an online questionnaire, and the application of the *Relevance Scale of Success Criteria for Tourism Projects* (ERCSPROTUR). For data analysis, triangulation of theories, methods, and data was adopted. The Iramuteq software was used to interpret interview data, while spreadsheets and frequency tables were used for quantitative data. Content analysis guided the overall process. Finally, a specific analysis was conducted for the proposed and validated scale using descriptive statistics such as mean, median, and standard deviation. The results suggest that tourism activity, with its capillarity and multidisciplinarity, finds strong support in project management practices. However, the relationship between "project management" and "tourism" remains fragile, both theoretically and practically. The study presents an overview of public sector tourism project management in Brazil, including the intersection of the PRT with route development and the relevance of key initiatives. Among the practical findings, eight types of tourism projects were identified, as well as the priority segments and tourism product characteristics that most influence route development projects. Another key result is the validation of a tool for tourism projects: the ERCS-PROTUR, which, when applied to tourism route project management, resulted in six categories and 24 success criteria. The study confirms that there is still a long path to be explored in the field of tourism project management. Nonetheless, it lays solid foundations and interweaves fundamental aspects of the field, advancing from conceptual dimensions and theoretical assumptions to its practical applicability through the lens of project success theory.

In an attempt to bring the gastronomic culture of Northeastern Brazil into identity essences, up to its transformation into a product for tourism use, viewed through the lens of the symbiotic tourist/gastronomic binomial, this thesis adopted a phenomenological stance as an epistemological approach in the effort to unravel what is referred to as the Produto Turístico Gastronômico Nordestino Brasileiro [PTGNB], observing, signifying, unveiling, and reflexively describing these products based on the relationships that conceive or may conceive them. Thus, the general objective was to spatialize the identity of the PTGNB in the offering of the 21st century. To achieve this, specific objectives were defined: to identify the gastronomic products that most symbolize each state of Northeastern Brazil; to distill the gastronomic tourism products through their structuring in a triangulated three-dimensional perspective; and to unveil how the Brazilian Northeastern Gastronomic Tourism Product has been outlined in the region’s tourismcultural offering. Therefore, this is a qualitative research with descriptive and exploratory characteristics. For this purpose, data collection techniques were chosen for each specific objective outlined, which included: documentary research, systematic bibliographic research, reflective direct observation and netnographic research. As analysis techniques, content analysis was employed, supported by triangulated and phenomenological reflection, with the research limited to the nine states of Northeastern Brazil: Alagoas, Bahia, Ceará, Maranhão, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Piauí, Rio Grande do Norte, and Sergipe, making it a multiple case study. The main results in the nine case studies that made up the research universe revealed 45 (forty-five) gastronomic tourism products (the PGTNB), which most prominently represented the Brazilian Northeast in relation to its tourism offerings. These included: sun-dried beef from Caicó, Potiguar shrimp, Potiguar paçoca, Potiguar rice with milk, ginga with tapioca, rubacão, Paraíba tapioca, Picuí sundried beef, goat offal stew (buchada de bode), Paraíba couscous, bolo de rolo (rolled cake), cartola, Sousa Leão cake, Pernambuco tapioca, jerked beef culture, sururu, crab, “cocada da Massagueira”, pituzada, “chiclete de camarão”, crab, Sergipe sun-dried beef, peanuts, mangaba, coconut sweet (queijadinha), acarajé, shrimp bobó, caruru, abará, vatapá, baião de dois, crab feast (caranguejada), Ceará couscous, Ceará fish stew (moqueca), Ceará rapadura (sugarcane candy), Maria Isabel rice, cajuína, capote, Campo Maior sun-dried beef, Piauí paçoca, cuxá rice, Maranhão fish stew (peixada maranhense), tiquira, Guaraná Jesus, and juçara. From the results, it was found that the PTGNB, although in some elements it reflects the image and likeness of the collective imagination of the Northeast, with its products of resistance and subsistence such as sun-dried beef (the most recurrent item in the memorial of the gastronomic tourism products of the Northeast), jerked beef, couscous and rapadura, on the other hand, many gastronomic products stood out in this northeastern memorial, establishing themselves with differentiated and unique characteristics, such as typical northeastern rice dishes (rubacão, Potiguar rice with milk, cuxá, baião de dois, and Maria Isabel rice), vatapá, acarajé, tiquira, juçara, ginga with tapioca, queijadinha, pituzada, capote, cajuína, and Guaraná Jesus. Thus, it became evident that the Northeast is a place where simple, multiracial hands, with female protagonism, transformed typical ingredients of the land into products of abundance and opulence, from a creative and hopeful Northeast.

Território como recurso e como abrigo: urbanização turística, conflitos e resistência territorial no litoral do Nordeste brasileiro
(Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, 2025-03-14) Costa, Wagner Fernandes; Fonseca, Maria Aparecida Pontes da; http://lattes.cnpq.br/4606530449881824; http://lattes.cnpq.br/3664588124180349; Pereira, Alexandre Queiroz; Todesco, Carolina; Marin, Ramon Garcia; Lima, Renata Mayara Moreira de
Interest in coastal areas grows as leisure and tourism practices solidify as sources of socialization and capitalist reproduction. Concurrently, the neoliberal economic order and globalization accelerate the circulation of capital between economic circuits and marginal territories of the global market. The combination of these situations results in the occupation of the Coastal Zone to meet the needs of vacationers, visitors and rentiers, converting these spaces into a resource destined for financial accumulation. The insertion of this market, its agents and its processes, however, triggers conflicts with actors who are not aligned with such activities. At this point, another connotation of the territory becomes evident, positioned as the shelter for unique forms of existence. Within this context, the research aims to investigate the resistance processes developed by communities affected by territorial conflicts motivated by the spatialization of tourist activity in coastal municipalities in the Northeast region. This is a qualitative investigation, whose data collection involved non-participant observation and interviews in communities in the cities of Maceió, Fortaleza, João Pessoa and Natal, in addition to documents from various sources (theses and dissertations, legal proceedings, government reports, among others). The data indicate a concentration of conflicts in the Northeast region, in which the interest of hegemonic actors in the production of space – the real estate sector and the State – impose processes of deterritorialization on coastal communities. Furthermore, it is observed that the logic of public and private investments in the Northeast coast expresses a relational triad – public incentives, tourism performance and real estate activity – that reinforces the stimulus for tourist urbanization, concentrated in municipalities with better performance in this activity, accentuating the unequal development of places and the valorization of territories located by the sea. Taking four communities as a sample, it is identified that resistance to such deterritorialization processes involves six dimensions, defined by the object-action in which they were operated, namely: political, urban, jurisdictional, environmental, cultural and economic. If, on the one hand, the possibilities and limitations of the measures developed are dialectically related to the creative capacity to circumvent the violence of offensive act, expressing the power dynamics imposed on the territories, on the Other hand, it is evident that the communities that obtain more significant victories in their conflicts are those that densify the articulation between different dimensions. Thus, diversifying and integrating actions between the dimensions becomes the effective strategy of reterritorialization and expresses the nature of what can be called territorial resistance.

Technological advances in recent decades have profoundly changed social behavior and markets, including the hospitality and tourism sectors. Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has reshaped the operational and strategic management of businesses, driving digital transformation. In this context, several studies and models attempt to measure the level of technology adoption in organizations. However, despite existing initiatives on digital maturity in different sectors, there is still no specific academic model for tourism that considers its specificities. The lack of studies on digital transformation in tourism and the growing importance of this topic highlights the need for a model that assesses the digital maturity of tourism businesses, especially in accommodation facilities. Thus, the question arises: How can digital transformation in tourism businesses in accommodation facilities be measured? Given this scenario, this thesis aims to develop a model to estimate the digital maturity of tourism businesses, focusing on the accommodation sector. The research is based on the positivist epistemological current, with a deductive approach and qualitative methods of an exploratory-descriptive nature. To this end, it adopts a systematic literature review, grounded theory, and the Adapted Delphi Method, with the participation of experts and a cross-sectional time frame. As main result, the Digital Maturity Model for Tourism Enterprises (DMMTour) is proposed, and structured in three dimensions: Digital Oriented Management, Processes and Technologies, and Marketing and Customers. The model aims to understand the level of digitalization of tourism businesses, ranging from the management and optimization of operational processes to the use of technologies to improve the guest experience and customer relationships. In addition to filling academic and market gaps, the DMMTour allows companies in the sector to assess their level of digital maturity and understand the challenges, opportunities, and strategies to improve their digitalization. To this end, the creation of the Digital Maturity Index (DMITour) is proposed, an indicator that assesses the implementation of the dimensions and sub-dimensions of the model and classifies the organization into five levels of digital maturity: (I) Digital Embryo; (II) Digital Beginner; (III) Digital Apprentice; (IV) Digital Expert; and (V) Digital Leader. The digital maturity model provides a practical tool for tourism companies to assess their progress in digital transformation and identify strategies to achieve more advanced levels of digitalization. The DMMTour contributes to both academic advancement in tourism literature and the competitive development of tourism companies.

Qualidade percebida no turismo de bem-estar: proposta do modelo SERVESTAR
(Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, 2025-03-19) Cavalcante, Islaine Cristiane Oliveira Gonçalves da Silva; Ferreira, Lissa Valéria Fernandes; http://lattes.cnpq.br/8015374156967844; http://lattes.cnpq.br/3366873537781490; Alexandre, Mauro Lemuel de Oliveira; Cavalcante, Erica Dayane Chaves; Guardia, Mabel Simone de Araújo Bezerra; Almeida, Juliana Vieira de; Batista, Saulo Gomes
Wellness tourism has been established as a growing segment in the global tourism sector, driven by increasing demand for experiences that promote health, relaxation, and quality of life. This study aims to propose a perceived quality model for wellness tourism. Methodologically, the research is characterized as qualitative, descriptive, and exploratory, structured in three phases. In the first phase, a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) on wellness tourism and service quality was conducted, analyzing articles published between 1987 and 2023 in the Web of Science (WoS) database. The selection followed the PRISMA protocol (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses), resulting in the validation of 90 empirical articles. The second phase combined multiple research strategies. Initially, a pilot study was conducted with consumers from 14 SPAs in the state of Rio Grande do Norte (RN), using User-Generated Content (UGC). Subsequently, the research included a longitudinal study, considering work developed by the researcher between 2013 and 2024, as well as interviews with 19 professionals in the field, including beauticians, massage therapists, and holistic therapists. Data analysis was performed using the content analysis technique (Bardin, 2011), supported by the Iramuteq software (version 0.7 Alpha). The semi-structured interview script incorporated a research vignette (Hoelz & Bataglia, 2015; Ornellas et al., 2023; Bezerra & Coelho, 2023) and was developed based on five dimensions: human element, service quality, perceived quality, customer satisfaction, and loyalty (Parasuraman et al., 1985; Cronin & Taylor, 1992; Conde, Mazaira & Costa, 2013; Mondo, 2014; Chi et al., 2020). In the third phase, the collected data were interpreted and systematized, resulting in the consolidation of the proposed perceived quality model. The SERVESTAR conceptual model is structured around four main aspects: (1) Inputs, related to the motivations for providing wellness services; (2) Perceived Quality Attributes, which assess service criteria; (3) Customer Experience, encompassing contextual and individual factors that influence service perception; and (4) Outputs, representing the results perceived after service utilization. Additionally, three assessment tools were developed: SERVSPA, for wellness establishments; SERVSPA-Home, for home services; and SERVYOGA, aimed at yoga and meditation therapists. The hypothesis that the perceived quality of wellness services is related to professional competence, infrastructure, and hospitality was explored throughout the study and supported by participants' narratives and perceptions, which highlight the centrality of the human element in the tourism experience. These findings reinforce the importance of investing in the training and recognition of professionals in the sector. It is concluded that hospitality emerges as a transversal element in the context of wellness tourism, as it integrates human attributes—such as welcoming, empathy, and active listening, with structural conditions, such as the adequacy and modernization of facilities. Furthermore, the relevance of the outcomes resulting from the service provided was highlighted, as these are closely linked to the performance of the wellness professional and have a direct impact on customer return rates and their willingness to recommend the service.

Several social transformations have impacted historical and port zones in different historical contexts. With the advancement of modernity and the expansion of cities into new centralities, these areas have undergone a process of depopulation, with a decline in services, residents, and lived experiences. Since the implementation of neoliberal policy agendas in Brazil, these foundational spaces of coastal cities have become targets of public and private interventions aimed at their reactivation and commercialization, often considering tourism as a key element. In this context, this dissertation aims to understand the constitution of the tourism field in the historical and port zone of Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, focusing on the reconfiguration of these areas for tourism purposes. It is considered that the agents operating within the established field compete for the accumulation of specific forms of capital and can influence the perception of tourism development, particularly regarding the implementation of strategies that position tourism as a vector for spatial transformation. The research is grounded in Bourdieu’s theory of field, capital, and habitus, serving as the theoretical and methodological framework. The methodological approach consists of: (i) a literature review of articles, dissertations, theses, and books relevant to the theoretical framework; (ii) delineation of the research universe, encompassing public and private agents, tourists, and local society; (iii) development of research instruments and conducting semi-structured and open-ended interviews; and (iv) collection of secondary data through official documents, meeting minutes, management reports, bulletins, and institutional records related to the tourism field. The findings indicate that the tourism field has been structured based on the dominance of tourism activity in other areas of the city, leading to the emergence of dominant agents who monopolize tourism development and subordinate agents who seek alternative forms of resistance to the absence of tourism in the historical and port zone. The contested forms of capital (economic, cultural, social, and tourismrelated) have been accumulated through differentiation processes, in which dominant agents — possessing a higher volume of capital—control decision-making regarding tourism development, while subordinate agents, with lower capital accumulation, have resisted by attempting to mobilize the zone through alternative means shaped by their marginalized experiences. Although the dominant agents' narratives express concern over the state of neglect in the historical and port zone, their habitus reflects an underlying tendency to maintain this condition. This contrast reveals a dissonance between the internalization of subjectivities within the practice zone and the externalization of subjectivities in the field of disputes, imposing on the tourism field a structured logic of behavior shaped by these narratives. This scenario has led to a natural process of distinction between agents, highlighting how power dynamics and structural inequalities shape the tourism field. The lack of integrated and participatory governance exacerbates these distortions, underscoring the urgent need for a more inclusive planning approach that values the contributions of all agents. The normalization of differences between agents in the historical and port zone of Natal has reinforced structural inequalities and incorporated symbolic disputes that shape the tourism field. To overcome these barriers, it is crucial to promote a more equitable redistribution of capital, fostering a symbolic revolution that enables subordinate agents to reposition themselves within the field while encouraging dialogue among various stakeholders to recognize and enhance alternative tourism practices, thereby broadening the region’s development possibilities.

The Lençois Maranhenses National Park, a world patrimony humanity, has proven to be a strong tourism driver for the state of Maranhão, attracting the attention of government, business people and visitors. It contributes to the generation of jobs and income, both directly and indirectly, especially for those who work in the park, accompanying tourists, whether they are tour guides, visitor guides, vehicle drivers or boat pilots, who usually organize themselves through associations and cooperatives. Thus, the main objective of this research is to understand the organizational strategies of professionals who work on tours in the PNLM, given the informality and precariousness of work in tourism. To this end, the methodological procedures used were bibliographical and documentary research, field studies with a qualitative approach, in loco observation, and semi-structured interviews combined with the life trajectory technique, with the presidents of associations and cooperatives and tour workers, seeking to understand their working conditions and whether they are moving in some way toward less predatory tourism. The data analysis was based on content analysis. The study revealed that the work of these individuals is precarious and residual, due to being informal and seasonal. However, actions have been developed in an attempt to alleviate this precariousness. This thesis contributes to the advancement of research based on workers who work in national parks, by listening to these individuals who survive from tourism.

Crises are intrinsic elements of global environments related to life in society, which are becoming more intense and notable every day. Having a plural, cross-border and interdisciplinary nature, these are expressed in tourism through critical events and situations that threaten and redefine the dynamic logic of destinations, imposing on the different actors involved the task of assuming positions and strategies that consider social and political action focused on specific management processes. Based on these aspects, and in the light of theoriesthat addressthe complexity of crises, this thesis focused on understanding how the actors involved in the context of tourism articulate themselves in the face of the development and occurrence of crises. Having as the universe of investigation the tourist destination of Pipa, Tibau do Sul (RN), and the analysis strand in the socio-environmental field, the methodological approach of the research was based on the following set of qualitative methods: 1) Bibliographic review (Proknow-c technique); 2) Secondary data research (survey of news on the tourism and environmental context, with the time frame from 2000 to 2023, also applied in stage 3); 3) Documentary research (local public policies, projects and social initiatives); and 4) Semi-structured and in-depth interviews (focused on four distinct groups of participants, i.e. residents, local government, private sector and third sector). The analysis of the information obtained was based on content analysis, using the Atlas Ti (versions 23 and 24) and Gephi (version 0.10) software, as well as descriptive analysis. The research results highlighted the following interconnected scenarios: Pipa has lost its essence and original identity, so that the management of the destination is inadequate in relation to its growth. There is a strong lack of understanding of the complexity of local problems, an aspect that reinforces the continuous and disproportionate exploitation of the space, sidelining the needs of the destination and its stakeholders. The genesis of local crises is directly correlated with their historical process, with 12 types of internal crises being identified, both gradual and sudden in nature. The articulation/collaboration between the groups investigated is stillsignificantly limited, exposing weaknesses in tourism governance in crisis contexts. Finally, it was found that despite specific preventive actions, the way in which the destination deals with crises in tourism constitutes a considerably reactive approach. As a result of the thesis, a model for classifying tourism crises was presented as a tool that can assist in the development of crisis management processes in the destination of Pipa.

In the context of tourism that can be both beneficial and harmful, the historic center of Olinda faces the challenge of managing its cultural heritage while promoting its development through tourism. Given that this scenario involves various agents at the heart of deliberations and decision-making, the governance of this historic center becomes essential in coordinating efforts among these entities and interests. Therefore, this study aims to investigate how the involved agents articulate actions and strategies that seek to reconcile preservation and tourism. The general objective of the research is to analyze the dynamics of governance in Olinda's historic center, considering the touristic use of its heritage and the consequences and outcomes of these articulations. The research is descriptive and explanatory, with a qualitative approach. Data collection and analysis were conducted using content analysis, establishing categories such as strategic planning, participation and inclusion, cooperation and coordination, institutional capacity, implementation and evaluation of deliberated actions, and the uses and effects of tourism, which structured the analysis of the results. To identify the social structure within this context, the theoreticalmethodological perspective of Bourdieu (1996; 2000; 2009; 2010) was employed, using his concepts of field and habitus. The main findings indicate that the Council for the Preservation of the Historic Center of Olinda (CPSHO) plays a leading role in the management of its historic center. However, this council operates with several limitations, including the absence of a defined work plan or systematic planning and execution processes, reflecting a weakness in its management and a lack of efficiency in the actions taken in favor of tourism and preservation in Olinda's historic center. Moreover, it was found that there is no direct integration between the preservation and tourism sectors, resulting in a fragmentation of the actions and policies implemented. It was identified that the dominant and most influential agents in this structure are preservation agents and local agents; however, depending on the capital at stake, these agents may act as allies or antagonists. This reality suggests that despite the integration of various agents through the council and active community participation, the governance structure is inconsistent and ineffective, facing significant challenges in translating identified issues and deliberations into practical execution and effective results.

Although the competitiveness of tourist destinations has gained prominence among the themes that make up the agendas of academics and government officials in recent decades, generating the proposition of robust reference models and contributing to their definition and theoretical delimitation, when transported to the field of application to different contexts, or that of a specific tourist attraction, as is the case of Conservation Units (CUs), require the adaptation of their criteria and attributes to the specificities of the attraction itself. In order to contribute to this adaptation, this research is concerned with proposing a reference structure for analyzing the competitiveness of conservation units as tourist attractions, capable of capturing both attributes that condition competitiveness already consolidated for destinations, and those that can translate the context and specificities of the UCs tourist attraction. The research is conducted using a qualitative methodology in two stages: the first was dedicated to the office deck for analysis and compilation of models already consolidated on the topic, from which the conceptual framework of the competitiveness attributes applied to the UCS proposed in the thesis was built, constituted of 4 dimensions 13 attributes and 24 indicators. In the second stage, the framework is validated by applying it to 3 UCs in Mozambique, characterizing the multi-case study. The techniques used were document analysis, compilation of data from secondary sources, field research, through in-person visits to collect data on site, interviews with managers, legislators and other UC actors. Data reading and interpretation were based on techniques such as content analysis, through the interpretation of primary and secondary data extracted from the survey, individual case studies - Màgoé, Gorongosa and Limpopo, in Mozambique, Africa. The results made it possible to draw some conclusions regarding the theme and context of the competitive conditions and sustainability of the UCs studied. Fremework proved to be adequate in preposing attributes that contributed to measuring the tourist competitiveness of conservation units and that reflect the premises of sustainability and the specificity and complexity of UCs. It allows evaluating the evolution of the situation of UCs in meeting the attributes, comparison between themselves and individually, in the face of international destination competitiveness criteria, map the difference in situations or realities in the UCs analyzed in terms of their current capacity for tourist competitiveness as well as reveal the potential and trajectories towards more robust competitive positions in terms of destination competitiveness , in this context, Gorongosa Park was found to have a strong competitive situation, Limpopo Park to have a more vulnerable competitive situation and finally Màgoé Park to be further away from the criteria or less competitive. Therefore, it is considered a theoretical model valid for a destination such as UC.

This thesis seeks to understand how the Pastoral Tourism (Pastur) in Salvador, Bahia, articulates its strategies to promote hospitality experiences in Catholic faith itineraries within the context of religious tourism. In this scenario, hospitality is a crucial element intertwined with spiritual values, shaping the experiences of visitors. The research, qualitative, descriptive, and exploratory in nature, was conducted through documentary, bibliographic, and participant analysis, complemented by semi-structured interviews and focus groups with representatives of the Church, the tourism sector, and visitors. Focusing on the faith itineraries implemented since 2017, such as the Arte e Fé, Caridade e Fé, and Conventos e Mosteiros itineraries, the research observes the hospitality practices and their implications in religious tourism. The results show that Pastur plays a fundamental role in harmonizing spiritual and economic interests, promoting hospitality that respects the domestic, social, and commercial aspects of the experience, according to Lashley’s theory. Additionally, the research highlights the challenges faced in implementing these practices, such as the need to balance the authenticity of experiences with commercial demands. The thesis concludes that Pastur's hospitality strategies in Salvador can serve as a model for other regions, demonstrating how the intersection between tourism and religion can contribute to sustainable development while enriching the spiritual experience of participants. In this context, hospitality, when adapted to the demands of tourism, emerges as a central practice that sustains and strengthens devotional traditions, maintaining the connection between visitors and sacred spaces, and driving economic and social development in the region.

This work presents the theoretical concepts of the thesis project * Tourism and Mediation of SocioEnvironmental Conflicts in Conservation Units in Amapá*. Given the significant relevance of this theme in the current national context, the research problem consists of analyzing the characteristics of the relationship between tourism and socio-environmental conflicts, as well as exploring how mediation can address the challenges in developing tourism activities in protected areas of Amapá. Methodologically, this is a Descriptive-Exploratory Study with a quantitative-qualitative approach. The research locus includes Conservation Units in the State of Amapá where tourism practices take place, with a proposed conflict mediation approach. Techniques included documentary research, literature review, and field studies with exploratory, semi-structured interviews and online surveys involving tourism managers from federal, state, and municipal agencies in Amapá, as well as representatives from traditional communities. Analysis involved the use of graphs and the Likert scale for certain questions. As a result, the Conservation Units in the State of Amapá engaged in tourism practices were identified, with an emphasis on a theoretical and empirical approach to the governance conditions of tourism in these areas. The conflicts associated with tourism were also analyzed, along with the challenges and potential solutions for conflict resolution. It was concluded, therefore, that the application of mediation in resolving socio-environmental conflicts in protected areas proved effective in ensuring the sustainability of tourism activities. This process contributed not only to environmental conservation but also to improving tourism management, enhancing the quality of life of local populations, and stimulating the economy of traditional communities.

Personalization is a process of creating and tailoring services and customer experiences to the individual needs, preferences, tastes, or constraints of the customer within the context of dynamic changes in the customer’s environment. Changes in technology also affect tourists' expectations regarding information services and the purchase intention process. Thus, this research constitutes an exploratory study proposing a model to investigate how tourists' personality factors (Big Five Personality Traits) moderate information processing and behavioral intentions to purchase tourism products/services in Online Social Networks (OSNs). To investigate this reality, the study analyzes the interplay of the Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA), the Heuristic-Systematic Model (HSM), and the Big Five Personality Traits in tourists’ information processing within OSNs through two routes: heuristic and systematic. The heuristic dimension focuses on the reliability of user-generated content (UGC), while the systematic dimension emphasizes the quality of arguments within UGC, both influencing credibility. Consequently, the study examines the direct relationship between information credibility and the Big Five, affecting tourists’ attitudes and behavioral intentions in purchasing tourism products/services. The research adopts a descriptive-exploratory approach based on the hypotheticaldeductive method with a quantitative orientation. It embraces positivist and pragmatic paradigms, as they allow for applying quantitative methods to achieve the study's explanatory and confirmatory objectives, supporting the idea of individuality and the context-dependence of tourist needs, particularly in purchasing products/services via OSNs. Data analysis techniques include exploratory factor analysis and structural equation modeling (SEM) to test relationships among constructs based on their assigned indicators, with data processing and analysis conducted using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) and AMOS software. The main findings reveal that utilitarian (extraversion, agreeableness) and experiential (neuroticism) components act as personality predictors. The heuristic and systematic routes influence information credibility processing, which, through attitude, positively affects the intention to purchase tourism products/services in OSNs, with a variance explained at 53%. The thesis contributes to understanding the consumer's role in the contemporary market environment of intelligent, data-driven personalized services. Tourists’ perceptions of personalized information performance are dynamically shaped during their interaction with the process and active participation in the service. Real-time non-intrusive management of these interactions and the idea that cooccurrence-based information processing across heuristic and systematic routes, along with managing the Big Five dimensions in utilitarian (neuroticism) and experiential (extraversion, agreeableness) components, collectively form tourists' overall perception of personalized content performance. This serves as an effective instrument for managing intention and information personalization in tourism.

In the relationship between tourism and culture, there is a dialectical conflict in the forms of cultural production and in the configurations of the supply and consumption of tourist products, which significantly affect the people and territories involved. When investigating patrimonialization, discourses and practices are identified that highlight distinctions and tensions related to cultures, environments, historical periods, and territories. The processes of patrimonialization and touristification are interconnected, resembling each other and intensely impacting sociocultural dynamics and the production of space. This thesis sought to identify, map, and characterize the materialization and territorialization of frevo and its use in tourism in Recife and Olinda (Pernambuco, Brazil), and to investigate its patrimonialization - based on the theoretical-methodological proposal of popular activation of heritage-territory - ultimately reflecting on “other possible forms of tourism”. From a decolonial perspective, a bibliographical review and theoretical crossover of critical tourism and heritage studies were conducted. Through documentary research, the nomination dossiers of frevo as Brazilian and world Intangible Cultural Heritage and the revalidation opinions of these titles were examined, along with documents, laws, plans, projects, and initiatives focused on culture, tourism, and frevo. Additionally, semi-structured interviews and participant and nonparticipant observation were conducted to understand the singularities and specificities of the frevo communities. Content analysis allowed for the identification and characterization of the conceptions, discourses, and narratives present and recurring in the documents, testimonies, and observations collected. This set of procedures enabled the analysis of the Affective Territorial Connection Variables (ATCV) and the development of the Frevo Map. It was intriguing to observe that although frevo represents and identifies the tourist destination Recife/Olinda, it does not seem to effectively benefit from the advantages (including economic) derived from the services and products that support tourism. The critical and decolonial analyses identified the struggles and utopias of frevo practitioners to resist the power standards (modern, Eurocentric, and colonial) that align with the hegemonic logics of capitalism and the global market, affecting social existence and material and subjective relations particularly in Latin America. It is estimated that this thesis contributes to uncommon reflections in the theoretical field of tourism, as, beyond being a case study of unique aspects, the considerations and analyses may be relevant for thinking about “other possible forms of tourism” in different contexts and realities where cultural assets are subject to global patrimonialization and touristification processes.
